asciii··on The Algebra of Loans in Rust
I was thinking this is some accounting primer in Rust...dang, still good stuff to know.
asciii··on The biggest CRT ever made: Sony's PVM-4300
My family bought our first one and we used it keep it on a carpet floor - boy was that an electrifying experience

> The time to cough up $100 or $200/month is when you've exhausted your $20/month quota and you are frustrated at getting cut off. At that point you should be able to make a responsible decision by yourself.

These kinds of articles should focus on use case because mileage may vary depending on maturity of idea, testing and host of other factors.

If the app, service, or whatever is unproven, that's a sunk cost on macbook vs. 4 weeks to validate an idea which is a pretty long time.

If the idea is sound then run it on macbook :)

asciii··on C100 Developer Terminal
I'm curious who the target expert or market is because I would not carry that clunky metal around.

The whole thing is terrible + a dedicated OS for "certain" work?

Price tag $2k? I would rather buy the Apple pouch.

asciii··on Free interactive tool that shows you how PCIe lanes work on motherboards
Warning: addicting site :)
asciii··on Azure hit by 15 Tbps DDoS attack using 500k IP addresses
I'm wagering something cheap for individual with a lot of bitcoin or crypto laying around
asciii··on iPhone Pocket
I actually thought this was an iPhone that fits in my pocket or something sleek, iPod style. This is worse
asciii··on Work after work: Notes from an unemployed new grad watching the job market break
I enjoyed reading your essay - really nice work. With regards to job prospects, please review the resume.

Those big paragraphs should really be bullet points and even then, highlight the contribution or interest you have that makes you "out of distribution human" in the CV.

asciii··on Tell HN: Azure outage
Yeah they're suggesting to use CLI but then my Frontdoor deployment failed. Welp.
asciii··on Show HN: Timelinize – Privately organize your own data from everywhere, locally
Oh man, this is awesome. I wanted an answer to Apple's Journal because I personally am using Obsidian (doing my best to tag and ref data). But this can be what I need to access that metadata layer and combine everything
asciii··on Ships are sailing with fake insurance from the Norwegian Ro Marine
If you're referring to the Nordstream pipeline, then Biden approved to have it blown as a calendestine operation. The EU parliament has admitted this.

Europe did choose poorly, but it's not like the U.S. is an amicable partner. They want to sell their gas at their preferred prices as well.

asciii··on GPT-5: Overdue, overhyped and underwhelming. And that's not the worst of it
Can someone let me know if they also find the existing UI prompt unbearably slow? At first I thought it was my browsers but I am having the same experience on every machine. It's so bloody slow with loading responses, freezing and even giving me the old browser tab death warning "Cancel or Wait"
asciii··on The militarization of Silicon Valley
I think the title should be the “Re-Militarization” of Silicon Valley, bc that’s where it all came from anyway (as the title describes).
asciii··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted open-sourcing something?
Really, how? When I add a new page on my Windows client, it never reaches my phone and is stuck in some weird refresh icon state.

I tried this on a windows laptop and another main machine. I just ended up keeping my iPad nearby.

asciii··on AI promised efficiency. Instead, it's making us work harder
That's a great analogy. I recently read about integrating AI similar to the use of calculators in math class -- learn how to do the basic operations first +,-,/,* and then use calculator to scale so you get some theoretical grounding
asciii··on How we built Bluey’s world
Kudos Catriona Drummond for letting the secret out of Brisbane, and perseverance to become a visual artist. What really attracts people to Bluey is the art. Seriously, it can be on mute and it's mesmerizing (not that the music is not awesome, because it totally makes it 10x better, too).

The artistic mature here is also off the charts, to recognize that innate sense of what makes things amazing:

> Appeal is such an intangible element to visual art, I could try and harp on in some pseudo-scientific way about what I personally think creates that deep satisfaction when viewing something ‘visually appealing’. I think there’s a whole weird matrix of things firing off in our monkey brains to illicit it. But I’ll just leave it at: we know it when we see it. I wanted to make something that was truly delicious to look at.

asciii··on Performance and telemetry analysis of Trae IDE, ByteDance's VSCode fork
Great write up OP!

Your analysis is thorough, and I wonder if their reduction of processes from 33 to 20...(WOW) had anything to do with moving telemetry logic elsewhere (hence increased endpoint activity).

What does Bytedance say regarding all this?

asciii··on Unsafe and Unpredictable: My Volvo EX90 Experience
Volvo may not want to replace the car for the guy...but from a marketing standpoint, they truly picked the wrong hill.

The site is very nice and pretty thorough.

Makes me not want to get this car or any Volvo!

asciii··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
This sounds terrible if they're just taking management and key employees?

Imagine backing this startup and the founder team takes a parachute...

asciii··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
Here I was thinking that part of Prompt Engineering is understanding context and awareness for other yada yada.
asciii··on Puerto Rico's Solar Microgrids Beat Blackout
i got really tired of Luma and after the new year blackout i jumped ship to windmar. i'm fairly rural so it's actually decent and in a good spot where other neighbors have fared well during hurricanes.
asciii··on Prolog Adventure Game
Cool! I got stuck trying to figure out how to turn on the flashlight and then got stuck in the woods and died.
asciii··on Whistleblower details how DOGE may have taken sensitive NLRB data
We let the word PayPal Mafia get to their head
asciii··on Oracle attempt to hide cybersecurity incident from customers?
I believe enterprise customers are not going to care much unless it helps with lowering existing costs.

OTOH, Oracle as part of BSA can demand an audit so they will inflict / make up reason to also punish (i.e. licensing or pull support). The business could invoke an MSA punishment clause and win temporarily but it will cause a headache going forward (further demands from Oracle, higher costs etc.)

Either way, Oracle gets what they want.

asciii··on You should know this before choosing Next.js
I still remember trying to host a Next.js web app myself (without netlify or vercel) and feeling so much PITA. The whole output was wonky and just didn't want to start right. I don't think it has gotten better considering the pull of Vercel
asciii··on Asahi Linux Progress Report - Linux 6.14
> Please demand change within your community.

I'm out of loop, but I demand a dark mode. Burning my eye balls was enough -.-

asciii··on Microsoft is plotting a future without OpenAI
Clear as day when he said this during the openai fiasco:

"we have the people, we have the compute, we have the data, we have everything. we are below them, above them, around them." -- satya nadella

asciii··on How to gain code execution on hundreds of millions of people and popular apps
> i wanted to get on the machine where the application gets built and the easiest way to do this would be a postinstall script in package.json, so i did that with a simple reverse shell payload

From ToDesktop incident report,

> This leak occurred because the build container had broader permissions than necessary, allowing a postinstall script in an application's package.json to retrieve Firebase credentials. We have since changed our architecture so that this can not happen again, see the "Infrastructure and tooling" and "Access control and authentication" sections above for more information about our fixes.

I'm curious to know what the trial/error here was to get their machine to spit out the build or if it was in one-shot
