If history has shown us anything, it's that everyone has a price and if someone comes along with enough money you'll change your tune. No thanks.

ascendantlogic··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
Yes but they gave rise to the Internet economy we exist in now. Of course there's going to be chaff that needs to be separated from the wheat. That doesn't mean that it's all going to fail.
ascendantlogic··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
it was encrypted and it was secret. They tricked people into giving them money. The currency is the only variable here.

I do understand you're being sarcastic, though.

ascendantlogic··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
Given the fact that we're discussing this in the comments of a popular link aggregator for a VC firm/startup accelerator, I'd wager if Internet 1.0 hadn't happened we wouldn't be here.
ascendantlogic··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
This is getting a lot of traction because anything related to crypto evokes really strong responses here, but this was a phishing attack. The fact it happened in the crypto space is largely secondary.

People get phished and get tricked into handing out bank account and credit card details all the time. It's not even newsworthy unless it happens on a large scale. This is only newsworthy because of the fact that it's crypto so people equate this with some sort of deficiency with the technology and/or ecosystem. That's not the case.

And just like I said, I'm sure all the neckbeards from the 70's and 80's felt the same way about the Internet and shit like Geocities and pets.com.

But hey, I'm sure it's "different" this time, right? You're right and everyone in the crypto space is wrong.

ascendantlogic··on Hackers nab $500k as Enigma is compromised weeks before its ICO
I wonder if this is what the curmudgeons from the 70's and 80's sounded like during the web 1.0 boom of the mid-to-late 90's
ascendantlogic··on Wasabi – Simple storage solution
IA is only applicable for items that are 128kb or larger in size. Also Glacier adds 32kb of glacier data to each object as well as 8kb of standard tier storage per object. S3 is really inefficient for huge numbers of small files.

"Why would we use this new technology when the current stuff works just fine?"

I feel like this song and dance precedes all major shifts in technology.

ascendantlogic··on Despite S.E.C. Warning, Wave of Initial Coin Offerings Grows
I take a different view of this. I remember the dot com bust. This is a lot like the old IPO mania. Out of those ashes the real companies with real products survived and the culling of the vaporware was healthy for the market.

There are a lot of people in the blockchain space that believe deeply in the technology and are working to see it to fruition. There's plenty that see a quick buck and will leave their "investors" holding the bag. This cycle is not new and I don't think it means everything regarding blockchain is a scam. It's just very reminiscent of mid-to-late 90's Internet mania

ascendantlogic··on Hacker Steals $8.4M Worth of Ethereum from Veritaseum Platform
"Hacker". On the Ethereum subreddits a lot of people think the CEO is just cashing out and running.
ascendantlogic··on Bitcoin Is Having a Civil War as It Enters a Critical Month
Hashing power is what mines the blocks. There will be no "voting the issue out" if the dominant chain is using Segwit. Just because you buy a few BTC on GDAX or something doesn't somehow give you more say than the miners over what software gets run on their own machines. Vast amounts of hashing power is concentrated in the mining pools that are signaling support for this and 99% of the people speculating on these currencies don't care about the underlying protocol, they just want to make money.
ascendantlogic··on Bitcoin Is Having a Civil War as It Enters a Critical Month
Incorrect. NYA begins locking in Segwit as early as July 21st. The point is to get Segwit locked in before August 1st so the UASF has no chance of creating a second chain that has any chance at life. You are correct that the 2x portion will require a hardfork that will presumably come down the road.
ascendantlogic··on Bitcoin Is Having a Civil War as It Enters a Critical Month
Segwit2x is an olive branch, they want the increased block size and are willing to implement Segwit to get it.

No the factions in the world of BTC have been very contentious for a long time now. It may be hyperbole but not by much.
ascendantlogic··on Bitcoin Is Having a Civil War as It Enters a Critical Month
90% of the hashing power has signaled their intention to adopt segwit2x as of late June. I assume it will become the dominant chain once it locks in right before August 1st.
ascendantlogic··on Linode Turns 14
It's just a lighthearted comment about the age of the site/company.
ascendantlogic··on Verelox Wiped by Ex-Admin
Ok, I'll bite. If you are an admin generally you have God powers over everything within your umbrella. If things are going south with you and your employer and you're a giant asshole you can most certainly use your God powers to quietly open firewall ports, install software in dusty "corners" of networks, etc. We can all armchair quarterback this but in the end humans make mistakes and beyond that the presence of actual malicious intent by someone with keys to the whole kingdom makes the detection and/or mitigation difficulty factor go up significantly. It's real easy to make righteous proclamations about other people's misfortune when it's not you.
ascendantlogic··on Bitcoin VS Ethereum
I have no doubt they will eventually be used as a class of currency. Thinking they will replace/destroy fiat currencies that have been around for hundreds of years is a bit of a stretch though.
ascendantlogic··on Bitcoin VS Ethereum
If you listen to the technoliberterians on the respective subreddits, BTC and ETH will destroy all fiat and central banking. The realists realize that is highly unlikely.
ascendantlogic··on Uber hit by legal setback in Europe
Uber? yes. Other ride hailing companies that aren't run by sociopathic technolibertarians that think the laws don't apply to them can go ahead and pick up the slack.
ascendantlogic··on Get started making music
That doesn't jive with the "I can do better" mantra around these parts. I say that both sincerely and sarcastically.
ascendantlogic··on Ask HN: Do you regret taking investment?
This is a problem that a lot of engineering types fall into. We as technical people think that the best technology will win, but that's not true. The best technology that the most people have heard of for the most reasonable price will win.
ascendantlogic··on A new upstream project to break up Docker into independent components
"So, do as you say, not as you do, eh?"

Exactly.

ascendantlogic··on A new upstream project to break up Docker into independent components
Yes, and I called out his post for being assholish (which it is). If we're calling a spade a spade then it goes both ways.
ascendantlogic··on CEO of ThinkPenguin, Inc arrested for filming police
I feel like in this case, if this person is in fact a "cop chaser", the issue is that they follow the police around and essentially harass them. It's one thing to be off minding your own business, it's another to make a hobby or career out of going out of your way to swear at cops and try to record them responding in a negative manner. YMMV.
ascendantlogic··on A response to “An experienced JavaScript dev’s account of learning React”
Because, as I'm reading the response, the original post had a number of inaccuracies and FUD that it's not a good idea to leave out there unanswered since people will then assume they are true.
ascendantlogic··on A response to “An experienced JavaScript dev’s account of learning React”
Sounds like the original post he was replying to was a hatchet job to begin with. The author did an admirable job of not getting down in the mud, I'm sure it was difficult not to take the original post personally and respond in kind.
ascendantlogic··on A new upstream project to break up Docker into independent components
You're not talking to software. You're talking to human beings about their software. You can criticize Docker's security track record in a more constructive way. There's nothing to be gained by being an asshole.
