arusahni··on An Oscar Winner Made a Khashoggi Documentary. Streaming Services Didn’t Want It
NYT's paywall requires JS. Reader mode (or disabling JS on the client), bypasses it. It does break some image loading, as well as their fancier article types.
arusahni··on Big Sur bug prevents upgrades to the next version
Or whatever they did to remove the Zoom vulnerability.
arusahni··on 51% of 4M Docker images have critical vulnerabilities
They prevent you from starting a new stack. I had automation that spun up new stacks for automated testing. That all broke.
arusahni··on 51% of 4M Docker images have critical vulnerabilities
The double-edged sword here is that you can get hit by their stack retirement policies. Cedar-14 was killed this year, and Heroku-16 is gone next year.

For better or for worse, Docker images will continue to run.

arusahni··on Cypress: Fast, easy, and reliable testing for anything that runs in a browser
One can still write tests that are flaky - some of the challenges that Selenium et al. experience are still present:

1. Selectors still need to be specific enough `.button` is great until you add another button.

2. Selectors can be _too_ specific in weird ways. Recently, I encountered a bug where reformatting my markup broke a test that detected if an element was present by checking for its contained text. Turns out the newlines that I inserted between the opening and closing tags were significant for the test. Thankfully, it's all JS, so one can appropriate work around.

3. For SPAs, it's harder to convey that a page/view load has completed. So, if I click a button and the entire viewport updates (potentially downloading a JS bundle in tandem), I either need to insert timeouts of arbitrary lengths, or explicitly call out to the the provided network API hooks. This can be annoying because now I not only need to worry about what I _can_ see when I navigate through my app, but also what I can't.

It's far better than what has come before, but it's not a silver bullet.

arusahni··on Google suggest vi for Emacs and Emacs for vi
I miss the days when Google used to be whimsical and weird.
arusahni··on CSS in GitHub Readmes
Based on the SVG markup, termtosvg [1].

arusahni··on Stripe Treasury
I appreciate the use of vim in the animatic.
arusahni··on Babelfish: SQL Server-to-Postgres Translation Layer
One can also change the precision of psql's monetary type. From the docs:

> The fractional precision is determined by the database's lc_monetary setting.

arusahni··on Salesforce is in talks to buy Slack
A better comparison might be Heroku, which, post SF acquisition, hasn't really changed to become more SalesForce-y as far as I can see.
arusahni··on AWS Cognito is having issues and health dashboards are still green
All my CloudWatch alerts are firing "OK" transitions, and AWS ES isn't displaying any known instances
arusahni··on Rocket Lab successfully splashs down Electron booster after orbital launch
Wow, Electron's being used everywhere! ;-)
arusahni··on Google to end the “top stories carousel” benefit to AMP next spring
If AMP becomes irrelevant, does this end the war against URLs? Or, with Google owning the most popular browser, does this not matter?
arusahni··on How to revert HP printer’s ban on 3rd-party ink cartridges
Some PDF viewers (e.g., Preview, Okular) let you place images of your signature on a document and then export the "signed" version. I haven't had issues with getting these documents accepted.
arusahni··on Understanding Causality Is the Next Challenge for Machine Learning
... and humans, tbh.

arusahni··on Jack Ma's Ant Group set for record $34B market debut
I always wondered what org was behind the Ant Design React UI framework.
arusahni··on Twitter preconnects to the wrong domains
> Twitter redirects links through its t.co link-shortening service. It was once a useful addition to its service as it helped people stay underneath the strict character limits. The link shortener reduced all links to 23 characters. Twitter gains some more data-insights about its users in the form of click-stream data and insight into popular links.

The t.co link also helps them block URLs that they deem problematic on their platform - in the event of spam, attack, or abuse, the redirect can instead be a black hole.

arusahni··on Show HN: TidalWaves API – live, tokenized news metadata from around the world
I agree that GDELT is the best source. It's a hard problem, for sure. I just think that their project's mission and description may lead folks to believe it's this perfect data set, which it isn't.
arusahni··on Show HN: TidalWaves API – live, tokenized news metadata from around the world
That was with a previous org, so thankfully not something I have to worry about now.

Our domain was pretty well defined, and we weren't building a real-time system, so we developed an adjudication tool and hired a few part time employees to evaluate and clean up our output.

arusahni··on Show HN: TidalWaves API – live, tokenized news metadata from around the world
As someone who has built event pipelines from GDELT data, I'd advise folks to not start (a GDELT project) with high expectations. Not only are there plenty of duplicates, but tagging quality is all over the place, especially for non-Western media.
arusahni··on What ORMs Have Taught Me: Just Learn SQL (2014)
Wasn't familiar with jOOQ - neat! Looks like it covers the same set of use-cases that SQLAlchemy-core handles in Python.
arusahni··on Chrome exempts Google sites from user site data settings
Non-Chrome user here - does clearing Google cookies on exit sign you out of the browser-level account? If so, I could see some world where they wanted to avoid that UX. Of course, there are more honest ways to present this: e.g., a toggle in the same settings screen that gives you enough context to be able to opt in/out.
arusahni··on Police are requesting data from smart speakers
This is a thin wrapper around a Wired article from two months ago [1]. The link should be updated to point to the original. Previously discussed on HN [2].

arusahni··on Pelican static site generator 4.5
Did your survey include Nikola [1]? It seems like the most direct competitor to Pelican, and I'd be curious to see how they stack up against each other.

arusahni··on Actix Web 3.0
Unfortunately, there are readability issues in dark mode (Firefox, MacOS) - inline code blocks are unreadable. To fix the issue, run the following in the browser console:

arusahni··on PEP – An open source PDF editor for Mac
For a second I thought this was a Python Enhancement Proposal.
arusahni··on TypeScript is weakening the JavaScript ecosystem
I think he's suggesting that one of his criteria for package selection is his ability to contribute changes to the upstream project if needed, which he feels he can't do for TypeScript on account of him not knowing the language.
arusahni··on Python setuptools v50 breaks pip installation on Debian/Ubuntu
I believe, after some conflict with the community, the original author divested himself of all his F/OSS projects. This resulted in pipenv being donated to the pypa GitHub org. Since then, the project appears to be seeing sporadic development through community contributions.
