artisinal··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
We are talking about burglars.
artisinal··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
I fail to see the relation between a video doorbell and stopping a burglar. Burglars wear masks.

Also, a doorbell ringing on the outside of the door is not only silly but in case of an apartment complex highly annoying for your neighbors.

And make sure your neighbors like being monitored through your five services.

Personally I have a button outside my front door. It is connected with a copper wire to the other side of the door to a small device that sends out an audible notification. No cloud required.

> the upcoming Samsung SmartThings API pricing

Imagine paying a Korean company five bucks a months so you can get a notification on your phone that your fridge needs a new water filter.

People really need to touch grass.

artisinal··on Record attempt: Longest train journey in the EU
4800km by car.

That’s an additional 1400km just for rail overhead. I knew it was bad but that is shocking.

artisinal··on "A big win for Android interoperability"
Would love it if the EU forced an alt-store on game consoles. Would be nice to install my own applications on a PlayStation or Xbox.

Would also be cool if they could force fee-free bank transactions and card payments within the EU.

That is more useful to me than wake words on Android.

artisinal··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
That doesn’t change the fact that the millionaire megafarmers completely screwed over Dutch water management for personal gains. Did you know that farmers are basically completely in control of waterschappen despite only bringing in a couple percent of the GDP.
artisinal··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
The 2003 European heatwave had a death toll of 70,000. That should have been a warning for us to get AC.
artisinal··on Record attempt: Longest train journey in the EU
4.5 days for 4000kms. Sad state of European rail.

Your average work migrant does 2000km in a day with a Golf TDI and a tray of energy drink. One fuel stop. I’ve seen plenty of Romanians and Bulgarians do this. Turks and Moroccans are also known for their long drives.

To give some useful advice. You can shave off some time by using busses here and there. Helsinki to Lisbon with FlixBus is 75 hours.

artisinal··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
The 30,000 preventable yearly deaths already remind us of that.
artisinal··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Drought in The Netherlands is artificial though. Millionaire farmers are pumping up water to water their crops during the day. Due to the heat most of the spray evaporates before it touches the plants. During the winter they artificially lower the ground water level for personal benefit.

Also of this so they can gain even more millions by exporting all the food across the border. Time to block some more highways, destroy some more property and kill some more people in order to secure those sweet EU subsidies.

My mind immediately went: I’m sure there is some German law or ordinance or regulation against hiding your Gaszähler. This surely goes against die Niederdruckanschlussverordnung.

Now that you have published this online, police will visit you to remove the Billy!

Perhaps I am too pessimistic with German laws.

PS: It looks much better this way.

artisinal··on OpenAI and Anthropic are ruining San Francisco
The federal government should step in. Give San Francisco four years to build the 76,000+ homes it needs. If the city fails, impose a substantial penalty for every unit missed and authorize the federal government to take over suitable public land and build the housing itself. At some point, housing shortages require consequences.

I tend to visit the local museums, drink coffee at a cute coffee place and hit up the town square instead of doing hardcore drugs.
artisinal··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
As a European that’s a great way to get paid for a two year holiday.
artisinal··on I Dream of Quieter Computing
Yes, GDPR with the right to be forgotten and being able to request which of your data is being processed is very hard on small organizations and volunteers.

You get a request for which data is processed from a user and suddenly you have to spend 8 hours in paper archives to find if the weekly charity mailing has ever mentioned this person by their full name.

I have only used Discord briefly but I found it to be very closed off and to be more of a chatbox than a knowledge base.

Perhaps we can make internet forums trendy again. Those are artisanal by nature. Only user generated content. Strict moderation.
artisinal··on Belgian car salesman becomes prince after DNA test proves royal parentage
Prince Laurent is likely very happy that his son is a completely normal guy. Illegitimate children of royalty typically end up a bit eccentric.
artisinal··on Belgian car salesman becomes prince after DNA test proves royal parentage
My father has a wonderful collection of model trains. It’s rather valuable in money. I have been playing with his trains since I was a young boy. Good memories.

Are you telling me that if I can’t afford to pay the state the full value of that train set, the trains will go to a government auction?

artisinal··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
It is available as a first party repair part for €16.20 via https://selfservicerepair.eu/

Apple part number is 923-03553

Also available third party via various retailers.

And don’t forget about parts availability. I can get a new screen for a 15 year old iPhone on AliExpress. I doubt you will be able to buy Fairphone 6 parts in 15 years.

A Fairphone is repairable right now but might not be in the future.

artisinal··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
10 minutes at most on a MacBook to swap the ports. €20 for the part. How many times in the lifespan of the laptop does the average person do that?

artisinal··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
If you drop a framework on its side the impact on the dongles will push them onto the board. Plastic flexes. There isn’t any shock absorbing happening. I don’t see any strain relieve on those dongles.

Perhaps framework can learn from Apple here.

artisinal··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
It’s a €20 / 5 minute fix on the MacBook to swap out the USB daughterboard. The solution framework uses takes up a lot of space and doesn’t really help you if you short out the port or drop the laptop on its side.
artisinal··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
Arent the USB ports on the framework also soldered on? I’m looking at a picture of the motherboard right now. Unlike my MacBook it doesn’t use a daughter board for the ports. It’s straight on the main board. Seems less repairable than my MacBook.
artisinal··on Fixing a bricked Framework laptop
A chassis is 10% of the cost of the laptop. Reusable chassis just to put new hardware in isn’t something the average consumer is interested in.

Also, buying a new mainboard every few years and putting the old mainboard on a shelf is a lot less sustainable than buying a complete new laptop and selling your old laptop to someone.
