artie_effim··on Ask HN: Why are there so many security breaches?
The good guys (defenders) have to be right 100% of the time, the bad guys (attackers) only have to be right once.

This is the crux of the entire information security industry.

artie_effim··on Ask HN: Which Linux distro has the best UX these days?
Been a Linux user for 20+ years (started on RehHat6 (not RHEL), went to slack, gentoo, ubuntu, debian and now ... Pop_OS) - PoP works great - it is Ubuntu with extra candy, some users have problems with it, I do not.

It is my primary work driver as full time netsec engineer and part time developer. PoP just works and gets out of your way (which is mostly GNOME philosophy).

Having worked in various desktop environments and window managers, PoP let's me work without too much linux admin overhead.

artie_effim··on Map Design – a guide to good looking maps (2008) [pdf]
HA! My wife is a cartographer (for the past 15 years) and it is a dying career. Her company is in its death knells and there is little hope of getting a design job these days, it's all GIS and barely any artistic design work nowadays. This is all nice to know, but there won't be but a few cartographers in 20 years.
artie_effim··on Debian Buster release date 2019-07-06
Having been a linux user for the past 20 years and a Debian user for the past 6, I am looking really forward to this release. Stability and reliability is rock solid. Great work Team Debian!

artie_effim··on Ask HN: Does a Linux distro that “just works” even exist?
Same here - linux user for like 20 years, last 5-7 have been debian. I user it at home and work (3 HDMI monitors) no issues. I have a few things that don't work in the enterprise environment (Skype mostly works, cant transfer files or make calls directly - using Pidgin and SIPE; Evolution with Exchange connector is just OK, sometimes the Address book barfs; no Visio level drawing tool where I can share drawings with co-workers - have to use Windows laptop). But, everything else just works - running Gnome 3.22.3 - I am a NetSec engineer and I develop apps for my team using Python (PyCharm with Snap) - so, not totally FREE, but totally works and made my workflow faster and better. Tilda and Terminator as emulators, ZSH (best shell ever) - all in all, never going back.
artie_effim··on Ask HN: Which Linux distribution do you use?
Debian stable!!!

<drops mic> ... <picks up mic>

I started a long time ago with RedHat4 (not RHEL) - like the late 90's I think... Went to Slackware for a while then Gentoo then Ubuntu

finally settled on Debian, been using at work and home since Squeeze (at home), just went native at work in Aug 2018.

artie_effim··on Paper, the least terrible password management tool (2015)
Threat modeling is the most important part of this discussion, but will fall by the wayside in this discussion as well. Normal folks are really bad at risk analysis. I personally use a paper storage system and diceware ( http://world.std.com/~reinhold/diceware.html ) - because, at the end of the day - low tech is the best tech.

<edit> - also am a CISSP

artie_effim··on Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean trash
Came here to say this. Honestly, the shows over folks. We are truly in the Anthropocene moving to a Blade Runner trash world. We've caught up with end-of-days sci-fi.
artie_effim··on Ask HN: Where can one learn about the history of the internet and the protocols?
Came here to say this. Learning BNF ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backus%E2%80%93Naur_form ) and knowing how to go to the roots have helped me more than once in my career (started as tester, moved to security engineer, then net engineer, then CISSP, then ISSO, then HIPPA SPO -- now senior sec engineer at top10 UNI)

Here is a good site to see what obsoletes and is superseded by what. https://www.potaroo.net/ietf/html/rfcindex.html

artie_effim··on Happy 25th Anniversary Slackware Linux
My evolutions.

RedHat4 (not RHEL, ~1998), Slackware, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Debian

Honestly, cut my teeth on Slack - loved it, but now debian is my mainstay.
