arthurgibson··on Which Companies Wasted the Most Money on Super Bowl Commercials?
Kinda amazing they still are producing Super bowl ads. I'm guessing they're not spending too much on production with babys and cats.
arthurgibson··on Which Companies Wasted the Most Money on Super Bowl Commercials?
Yea, that surprised us that Clash of Clans was #1, but figured it was something to do with it being a mobile product. #2 is Budweiser though.
arthurgibson··on Which Companies Wasted the Most Money on Super Bowl Commercials?
This uses ad spend for the tv spot and correlates it to its effectiveness on the internet.
arthurgibson··on Which Companies Wasted the Most Money on Super Bowl Commercials?
We probably could get Clash of Clans downloads, interesting they're not necessarily selling anything.
arthurgibson··on Which Companies Wasted the Most Money on Super Bowl Commercials?
You can go through the data on each ad here: https://superbowl.firebaseapp.com/s/view-/cost

The Budweiser and Clash of clans would have had roughly $3-$4 cost per minute on Youtube views. Where as Weight Watchers was at $1233 per minute for Youtube viewers.

arthurgibson··on Which Companies Wasted the Most Money on Super Bowl Commercials?
We thought that Youtube was a good gauge of general internet interest in the ad. If you liked the ad or ended up talking about it after, you probably pulled it up on Youtube to see it again.

Also not mentioned is that these cards expire in some 3-6 month range and are usually never redeemed.
arthurgibson··on Verizon.com is down
Coincidentally I was trying to cancel my telephone service. Was told last night I need to create a whole new account to just have internet, they couldn't remove the phone.
arthurgibson··on Why I’m No Longer a Professor
This scenario also happens in the US college space, experience from a former community college professor in 2 different states. The students basically try to leverage these surveys for grades. Professor decided to become a full time tutor, better pay and less hassle.

Slick UI, @doki_pen something built something really similar a few months ago with crap.io, its on github:

arthurgibson··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
I understand the sentiment, there should be some way to flag the listing on AirBNB or penalize the renter, but lets be fair to the renter and leave their address out of the post. I'm sure everyone is breaking leases and condo regulations to give out a discount to us.
arthurgibson··on A society of phone zombies
Ha, once Google Glass goes mainstream no one will be pulling out phones, they can stare blankly at you and read whatever they want.

Seriously, there's a middle ground with everything, too much TV, on the laptop, playing video games. Individuals need to evaluate their own life and valuable interactions. At least the guy in the video made the hike instead of getting a virtual tour.

arthurgibson··on Trial week: Our hiring secret
I've heard about another company offering this to engineers and sales people. As far as I remember both individuals had kids and turned it down, but I don't think the company offered compensation. I assume if you really want the job, you'd do it.

Has HN turned into a literary club? Despite trying to make it a spy novel, I thought this article was one of the better stories read on HN.

Update: The post itself was almost as engaging as my mustache addition. Sorry for deterring the conversation.

arthurgibson··on Why no internet, Boston?
In general the city should make it easier or negotiate to get better internet available for businesses. We pay taxes and thats what we need. I'm sure a permit to do the work is not cheap.
arthurgibson··on Ask HN: Dev w/ Journalists, how can I push them to write about SOPA and PIPA?
it was ONA Boston, the meeting got thrown in the direction of debating whether BuzzFeed was worthy of serving Political content.
arthurgibson··on Hacker News Blacking Out Logo
Yes it does need to be filled, for the journalist and tech writes who scour hacker news for their latest blog posts. Not too leave out the random person who discovers Hacker News today.
arthurgibson··on Alexis Ohanian vs NBC - Debating SOPA
Mr. Cotton is stuck in the brick and mortar business mode. He clearly does not understand that the Internet has no borders. He is "wholesale" lumping every international web site into this pot of illegal activity. Why didn't NBC bring a VP or media exec on?
arthurgibson··on Namecheap to Donate $1 to EFF for Every Domain Transfer on December 29th
Why doesn't NameCheap donate a $1 for every domain moved since 12/22 or last week when all the SOPA issues with Godaddy were presented?
arthurgibson··on List of YC companies that use GoDaddy
This is all part of the protest of SOPA, everyone has to do their part, if its moving away from GoDaddy until they rescind their support let it ride.
arthurgibson··on List of YC companies that use GoDaddy
Ha this is great, over at Embedly we plan to move away from Godaddy, our domains are not on godaddy, just the ssl cert (for the short term). I started moving some one-off domains we own last night to namecheap, http://twitter.com/#!/artgibby/status/149995036677910528

arthurgibson··on Ask HN: What happened to Rolling.fm?
I was looking to take a break from Pandora, and realized that http://rolling.fm is gone. Disclaimer: turntable was not letting people in at the time.
