arkitaip··on Your idea is brilliant, your idea is worthless (2016)
Falling into a trap = an analogy for the cognitive bias that is loss aversion.
arkitaip··on Your idea is brilliant, your idea is worthless (2016)
A lot of the times a company that seems to be a first mover is actually part of the Nth wave of a particular tech. Facebook wasn't the first social network but it might seem like it if you define the market narrowly enough. Google didn't do web search first, either. Sometimes it takes decades and centuries for tech to mature because people and societies move slowly.
arkitaip··on Your idea is brilliant, your idea is worthless (2016)
Don Norman explains this in the latest edition of The Psychology of Everyday Things (amazing book on product and design, btw). Sometimes, it can take centuries before tech goes from idea to everyday reality in the hands of ordinary people. For example, the videophone was depicted in a famous illustration as early as 1879 [0] but it's only in the past two decades that mobiles have made them somewhat ubiquitous.

Many of us also fall into the trap of thinking that There Can Only Be One Product and if someone beats us to launching it, well then the game is over.

In reality, you can even launch products that compete with big boys like Facebook or Google due to their bureaucratic nature, hunger for only billion dollar markets, institutional knowledge blindness, etc.

≥ So it is no surprise that Muslims will attempt to take possession of, or destroy, everything that belongs to the Jews. The battle for the ownership of Jerusalem is not a religious one. It is not based on anything holy, anything to do with Allah. These are only excuses. It is simply a matter of claiming superiority over another nation: What Islam has been from day zero. “Allahu Akbar”, “Allah is Greater”. It is a war of superiority over another. Truth has nothing to do with it.

Don't you love it when people self-expose themselves of being hateful creeps (there also this crap [0]). Nice one dude, now the entire world - including future employers - can see you for who you really are.

arkitaip··on The Blurred Lines of Parasocial Relationships
Chat becomes highly memetic in large channels but that's part of the fun and highly engrossing. It's like being at a concert and becoming fully immersed with the rest of the hive mind. Many religions base their practices around this feeling of collective ecstasy, only on Twitch it's by using a sea of pogs and pepegas.
arkitaip··on Google Maps updates 'dangerous' Ben Nevis route
People got lost using maps all the time because they were and are difficult to read.
arkitaip··on Google Maps updates 'dangerous' Ben Nevis route
You make zero sense. If you can't trust a map, what can you trust? Or should it be less reliable because it's an app?

People aren't stupid, it's we - devs and designers - who have designed apps that confuse and deceit them, sometimes dangerously so. Let's stop blaming users and fix our shitty UIs.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: How do you come to terms accepting a hard-worked project is going down?
Sounds pretty successful for something you worked on for just a month and only exposed to the world for a few days. Most projects never see these numbers because they never see the day of light.

You seem to have high expectations for this project, expecting it to take people by storm from the start. Why? It can take YEARS for code to gain popularity, and even then your niche might be so small that the success feels minor.

We all want our code to make a big splash on GitHub, but the truth is that most open code is worked on by a single dev for years without much fanfare.

arkitaip··on Show HN: GPT-3 market map with 180+ apps and use cases
Very cool to have all GPT-3 based projects gathered like this.
arkitaip··on Google parts with Cloud VP over his manifesto renouncing his antisemitism
He is an VP, great communication skills is key to his success, that also includes understanding his audience. Like in, maybe I can write about diversity and inclusion without referencing my horrible antisemitism because holy shit that would be bonkers to bring up in a corporate context.
arkitaip··on Google parts with Cloud VP over his manifesto renouncing his antisemitism
Here's what I think happened:

The Powers That Be took a short look at this drama and decided that no, this is not the hill to die on. They never are. Being perceived as tolerating antisemitism because VP Weirdo keeps getting "misunderstood" over a "manifesto"? That's not even a hill anymore, it's a grave someone dug for themselves.

arkitaip··on Google parts with Cloud VP over his manifesto renouncing his antisemitism
This is the easy solution, just fire the guy and go back to being a Happy Corporate Family.

But then again, he seems to be lacking in leadership skills if he keeps getting "misunderstood" regarding his manifesto.

Protip: your VPs should never write any kind of manifesto involving jews in any shape or form. Stick to banal business management tropes like anyone else.

arkitaip··on Show HN: I made an interactive anti-procrastination video course
I like talking about this so I hope you indulge me, did you base your design on any specific research or works on procrastination? It would be interesting what the state of the art has to say about the causes of procrastination and potential solutions.
arkitaip··on Facebook wants creators, but YouTube is paying creators much, much more
> The second reason is philosophical, and perhaps more important: I’m told that Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t think Facebook content-makers should get a cut of all of Facebook’s revenue. And that while he’s happy Facebook content-makers are giving him content, he thinks he can replace them with others if they don’t like the terms.

Yay for Zuckerberg being so fucking greedy that he undermines his own platform. That's functional stupidity right there.

arkitaip··on Show HN: I made an interactive anti-procrastination video course
You're probably right about preventing procrastination. The pomodoro technique is often recommended because it prevents procrastination from happening within small time boxes.

But then again, how would I as a procrastinator reach this pretty profound insight? Any information targeting me has to be skillfully crafted to guide me in the right direction while avoiding all the issues that cause me to procrastinate in the first place.

arkitaip··on Show HN: I made an interactive anti-procrastination video course
The problem with actionable anti-procrastination content is that they have too many steps and to little immediate action. As procrastinators, we've marinated our anxious brains to develop sophisticated techniques to ignore any and all remedies.

The ultimate anti-procrastination app? It just has one "Stop procrastination" button.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: Have MVP, What Next?
Your next step should have been your previous step, i.e. make sure there is a reasonable demand that your app can satisfy:

* Did you speak to future customers to figure out if their pain points are real, i.e. they are ready to pay you?

* Did you create a landing page that collects emails of people who want to use your app?

* Did you find a couple of customers who are so desperate for your app that they want to get into beta or maybe even pay you for whatever you have on your hands?

There are tons of low code or even no-code options out there that can help you build a landing site, a mailing list and everything else you need to figure out the product-market fit [0]. My goto is currently WordPress + Elementor (visual editor) + Yoast (SEO) + Breeze (performance) + Cloudflare CDN (moar performance!!) + MailChimp (mailing lists).

arkitaip··on Blue Origin: Teenager to Fly into Space with Jeff Bezos
The horror of having to be in space with Bezos of all people. I think I would prefer a deranged Sam Neill.
arkitaip··on Goodbye, Fleets
This simply doesn't work. I've tried every tool and trick available and sooner than later the feed becomes filled with drama, politics and random noise. Partly because humans are inherently social and political, partly because Twitter will throw random tweets and topics at you.
arkitaip··on Jeff Bezos’ Dystopian Legacy Goes Far Beyond Amazon
You know that decades of anti-union propaganda is still in effect when individuals are convinced that working together with other individuals and pooling their resources to improve their working conditions is a bad thing.

Of course when companies do it - through trade associations or lobbying - it's seen as natural and necessary for their survival.

arkitaip··on Why Richard Branson’s flight matters
Billionaire worship is indeed pathetic but these nuckleheads literally drive down costs so the rest of us knuckleheads can do a miserable family subby during the long summer years when Earth is scorching hot - literally on fire - due to climate change.
arkitaip··on This Website is hosted on an Casio fx-9750GII Calculator
Maybe we should all skip cloud platfoms and CDNs and buy a bunch of Casios instead.
arkitaip··on Teaching other teachers how to teach CS better
The post is about teaching CS, not learning it. They are related but different disciplines.
arkitaip··on Risk Assessment of GitHub Copilot
Maybe you are right but where UML created busy work, Copilot will literally do your work for you. I can even imagine a future where management makes it policy to Copilot first to save time and money.
arkitaip··on Risk Assessment of GitHub Copilot
≥ These three example pieces of flawed code did not require any cajoling; Copilot was happy to write them from straightforward requests for functional code. The inevitable conclusion is that Copilot can and will write security vulnerabilities on a regular basis, especially in memory-unsafe languages.

If people can copy paste the most insecure code from Stack Overflow or random tutorials, they will absolutely use Copilot to "write" code and it will be become the default, especially since it's so incredibly easy to use. Also, it's just the first generation tool if it's kind, imagine what similar products will accomplish in 20 years.

arkitaip··on Teaching other teachers how to teach CS better
lmfao, pedagogical education is its own discipline and becoming a competent teacher takes proper education and training. Googling how to teach ain't going to do shit for you.
arkitaip··on Teaching other teachers how to teach CS better
It's crazy that the people doing some of the most complex and demanding research on the planet are the ones who teach under graduates too, trying to get tons of papers published, etc, etc. Obviously the educational quality suffers when davulty have to do so many complex and different things at the same.
arkitaip··on Windows 11 Clone Made Using Webflow with No Custom Code
How painful was this to make?

I've tried to create even simple landing pages in Webflow and my god is it finicky and slow to drag and drop elements, change their properties, etc. By the time I've create the basic design, I'm exhausted and demotivated to use Webflow for anything serious.

What am I missing?

arkitaip··on Barry Diller: The movie business as before is finished and will never come back
My understanding is that musicals have the exact problem of being way too commerical and basically adaptations of already, mediocre, work. The difference is that the indie scene is even smaller due to the relative costs of creating musicals.
