That's the main issue of purchasing products and services for you business, i.e it's almost impossible to gauge the real value of what you are buying until you try it out and can analyze the figures. This is why it's crazy that so many sass providers still require credit cards upfront or have an arbitrary 14 days trial period instead of having a free plan with unlimited trial period. It removes so many obstacles from the founder's decision-making process without costing the provider much money.
Well, yeah. Even if you follow good people, even if you use the various tools for blocking accounts and keywords, the drama is inescapable. People just can't separate their private lives from their professional lives. And yet, when Twitter is good, it's an amazing place of awesome people sharing awesome ideas, projects and kindness.
"Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains by 7% each year in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. After a two year “freeze”, Verisign can increase prices by 7% annually during 2026-2029, then another two year “freeze”. This cycle will continue, meaning that within 10 years, .COM domains could cost approximately 70% more than the current wholesale price of $7.85 — and the sky is the limit."
I agree but let's also understand the damaging dynamics we see on HN everyday where some people consider a multi million dollar operation a "lifestyle business".
It was a terrible move that has jeopardized the lives of millions and further corroded the WHO's reputation. The very trustworthiness of the organization is being questioned so much so that people are dismissing official communiques as outright lies.
I don't see how that's even relevant here. Most countries have a highly competent and knowledgeable nucleus of tech people but that's not really relevant to tech security in the public sector.
This is a "think piece" and not based on any research or data. In reality, I'm seeing lots of relatively small entertainers do the 1000 Fans Thing on Twitch and it really works because each subscriber pays 5 USD per month.
This was my main concern when Stadia was launched. I knew that Google could figure out the tech but their product development and customer support would be their Achilles heel, especially when it comes to gaming. Gamers go all in with their passion and if you as a company aren't heavily* community oriented, their passion can quickly turn destructive.
* Their reputation for prematurely closing down products too but that's not something they can directly affect.
This is scary: "We estimated that the mean R0 ranges from 3.30 (95%CI: 2.73-3.96) to 5.47 (95%CI: 4.16-7.10) associated with 0-fold to 2-fold increase in the reporting rate."
The way I see it is that there are actually two Twitters:
* Bad Twitter: is run by Twitter Inc. and tries everything to mess with your feed, turning it into a toxic mess that's designed to clickbait and outrage you. It is disrespectful and domineering in the way the UI is designed and every now and then it slaps you around by introducing a change in the UI that increases the noise in your feed.
* Good Twitter: this is the amazing people you know and don't know who use the social network to connect, create and have fun. It's creative af and makes it easy to discover new minds all around the planet. It's also very kind in that people will try to uplift each other and offer support in more ways I can recall.
Google Domains does have phone/chat/mail support but I still would like to believe that their security practices are solid enough that they wouldn't fall for this most basic of social engineering attacks.
Right but what about Android? What's the point of setting up email at my own domain - which I already have - when Google can track everything through Android?
I had zero issues quitting Facebook but replacing Gmail and Android? That's going to be really tough considering Gmail is my online identify hub and Android facilitates so many utility services (banking, electronic identification, money transfers, etc).
The fact that you and parent are getting downvoted just shows how out of touch with reality some developers have become. They really are exhibiting the same cluelessness they often attribute to managers.
I think this is a great example of brutalist/ugly design where you go so far to the opposite on the aesthetic spectrum that your design starts to appeal to people.
I wonder how often system implementation delays are caused by excessive government contract litigation? How much does it cost taxpayers because Amazon or Oracle are litigious?
I suspect what the new gTLD program has really done is to make com/org/net seem even more trustworthy and premium because people can no longer keep up with the influx of new gTLDs ( all 1200 of them!).
This. For ever engineer that somehow works with search quality, there are thousands of experts who are working to subvert SERPs in some fashion. Pretty sure that if we gained true knowledge about the challenges that search faces due to abuse, it would be like facing one of Lovecraft's cosmic horrors.
This has been an issue with Netflix for years. It's almost as if the translators of movie or TV series don't have access to the videos themselves because every other sentence is slightly wrong.
This is already a thing in China and their social credit system. Lose enough points and you can be prevented from buying a train ticket or booking a flight [0]. You can probably imagine that rectifying errors in this system is... troublesome.
