arkitaip··on Drivers react to Tesla’s full self-driving beta release
Terrifying scenarios are described in the article. This is obviously nothing more than (very) advanced lane assistance and absolutely requires fully observant drivers who might have to take over the wheel in the fraction of a second.
arkitaip··on New political polarization casts rivals as alien, unlikable, contemptible
It is virtually impossible on Twitter, I know because I've used every tool possible (tweet deck, lists, occasionally muting people, changing the feed layout) and it just doesn't work because (a) Twitter is designed to bleed content from one tribe to another (b), because people have one feed where they combine work, private life and politics and (c) the metrics Twitter use are based on designs that agitate and divide.
arkitaip··on Facebook Is a 'Super Spreader' of Election Misinformation
The algorithm is designed to propagate misinformation like crazy because that's what drives engagement and improves Facebook's metrics.
arkitaip··on Say goodbye to resource-caching across sites and domains
One of the benefits of using cdn resources is that it enables prototyping with, say, bootstrap so fast because you could essentially upload a single html file instead of a bunch of css, is,l and graphics. I mean, that will still be possible but there are more benefits to CDNs that just performance.
arkitaip··on The Nordic concept of friluftsliv – outdoor life
You know how poorly programming is represented in movies and tv series makes you realize how wrong they probably are about every other topic? Well, as a Swede I can tell you that this article is trying too hard about selling the idea that friluftsliv is something unique to the Nordic countries. just like when media tries to sell hygge (coziness) and fika (taking a break) as concepts that are unique, almost impossible to understand by reading alone, to the Nordic countries when in fact they are universal human concepts.

An appreciation of and desire to be in nature is part of almost every society on the planet. The difference is if we can afford to be in nature and if we have access to it. The part about allemansrätten, which is the right go access nature and lands which don't belong to you, is correct though and I don't think many countries grant their citizens those rights.

arkitaip··on Gitlab Blocked Iranians’ Access
What a defeatist attitude. What you unkindly label as whining, I see as advocacy for a good cause. Blocking access to gitlab does nothing but strengthen the autocracy in Iran and prevents Iranian devs from making a living and supporting their communities.
arkitaip··on Falling five storeys from a New York rooftop changed my life
This is why checklists have become are a huge thing in the medical field.

In your scenario, imagine if the first nurse had it drilled into her that she must tick a box on the patient checklist, which lies very visible next to the patient and is almost impossible to not notice, and you have a physical system that makes it difficult to commit mistakes

arkitaip··on Ask HN: My 7yo has lateral Lisp. Suggestions please?
I am afraid I don't know that.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: My 7yo has lateral Lisp. Suggestions please?
Is it possible to do remote therapy?

Maybe you have already read these blog posts on lateral lisps, but they seem useful with try-at-home programs:

arkitaip··on Anki as Learning Superpower: Computer Science Edition
Competency and efficiency.
arkitaip··on Google blocked all my websites without prior notice
Never ever create sub domains for your users using your main business domain. There is a reason why GitHub uses github.io.

You need to migrate user accounts to their own domain asap and use Search console to redirect and handle whatever issues that Google has flagged.

arkitaip··on PHP 8: Before and After
Very soon:

"A long-standing goal of the WordPress project is to be compatible with new versions of PHP on their release day. The next major version of PHP (version 8.0) is currently scheduled for release on November 26, 2020. WordPress Core contributors are working to ensure PHP 8.0 is supported in the next major version of WordPress (version 5.6), which is currently scheduled to be released on December 8, 2020."

arkitaip··on I reverse engineered McDonalds’ internal API
The clock probably resets when the power goes out or the fuse blows. They would need a battery as a backup to keep the time current.
arkitaip··on WordPress 5.6 Beta 1
"Auto-update option for major releases"

This is the big feature with this release and I suspect it's just a matter of time before auto updates for releases is enabled by default. It will certainly break sites, especially legacy ones, which is why it needs to be optional right now until we figure out how to better run legacy WP sites that don't break due to incompatible versions of WP, themes and plugins.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: Why would my HOA change it's domain name
They forgot to renew the domain name and someone else got it instead.
arkitaip··on Most companies developing AI capabilities have yet to gain significant benefits
Just like any truly transformative tech, AI takes long-term planning, tons of competence and picking the parts that make most sense for your current business goals. So obviously AI fails for most organizations because they lack all of these things and the fact that most never operate in scale or tackle problems difficult enough to need AI.

Maybe one solution is finding the AI equivalent of Microsoft Office, ie a group of cheap tools that are so powerful, flexible and integrated that they can be used by individual employees and teams across all industries and business needs.

arkitaip··on My chatbot is dead – Why yours should probably be too
Google Assistant actually works, especially it's speech recognition that has been near flawless for me. I can totally see it becoming an integrated feature in future housing constructions.
arkitaip··on Indoor Mapping Data Format
I was thinking that this sounds excessive but them I remembered that I recently relented and reinstalled Google Keep to make my grocery store shopping less chaotic by ordering items according to store sections. Waking past the same isle half a dozen times because you can't locate items is just too frustrating.
arkitaip··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
Surely you mean wordpress.com.

Also, millions of people host WordPress themselves and it works fine considering how much value it delivers.

arkitaip··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
Good luck getting businesses to manage hugo or jekyll on their $10 hosting.
arkitaip··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
Great, now they are on some unknown platform where trivial dynamic features are going to be expensive and difficult to implement.
arkitaip··on Netflix is creating a problem by cancelling TV shows too soon
How long before production companies start paying people to watch (measurable too) the first episodes of a tv series? If you could boost your viewership so much you got to produce multiple seasons, losing out on the first season might not be a bad deal.
arkitaip··on How Much Vitamin D Is Too Much? A Case Report and Review of the Literature
I seriously doubt this was a scientific study to test the upper tolerance limits of vit D. I mean, no ethics committee on the planet would approve the dosage.
arkitaip··on How Much Vitamin D Is Too Much? A Case Report and Review of the Literature
"The patient had been assuming very high dose of cholecalciferol since 20 months (cumulative 78,000,000UI, mean daily 130,000UI), as indicated by a non-conventional protocol for multiple sclerosis."

"This case confirms that vitamin D intoxication is possible albeit with a really high dose."

This is a truly insane dosage but all this case says is that however created this protocol is dangerously incompetent.

arkitaip··on An interview with Paul Mockapetris, the creator of the DNS
Imagine writing code so useful and flexible it lasts for decades, being used every single day by billions. DNS might not be perfect but it's one of those simple and elegant systems that keeps on trucking because of its simplicity.
arkitaip··on We Hacked Apple for 3 Months
Why not both so as to protect your assets.
arkitaip··on Roof blows off new Tesla Model Y
I used to think that voice recognition sucked until I tried Google Assistant. Holy shit is it amazing when it picks up every single word you utter every single time. Truly impressive and if car manufacturers can license the voice tech from Google I can definitely see the tech being quite useful.
arkitaip··on Storks Deliver Babies (p= 0.008)
Let's not attack people with autism because HN is full of the humorless.
arkitaip··on Adults with ADHD show decreased function in brain dopamine reward pathway (2010)
I feel you dude, I have the same problem with content about dealing with procrastination.
arkitaip··on USB-C was supposed to simplify our lives, but instead it’s a total mess
Bah, in my days we wrote a dozen of drivers per day and that's only because we had to fight the network admins in hand to hand combat during the afternoon....
