arduinomancer··on Ask HN: Does FAANG innovate anymore? If not, where to go?
Honestly as someone who went to FAANG after graduation and worked on a bunch of different teams: my number one advice if you want interesting problems is to avoid working on web apps/web services and avoid any roles doing frontend/backend development

That area of software is very advanced at this point and even at FAANG you're mostly just wiring together services/libraries.

You might think "Well what about huge scale services?, that must be interesting?" Eh, not really. It just means more partitioning of data/traffic, more hosts, and more time writing pipeline/automation code.

I would recommend finding a more niche area you are interested in, for example: game development, game engines, image processing, machine learning, operating systems, graphics, VFX, audio/DSP, high performance computing, GPU related stuff, embedded systems, robotics, etc...

arduinomancer··on When hiring developers, have the candidate read existing code
This would not work based on my experience

What actually would happen is the next person comes along and changes the code and doesn’t update the external doc because it’s probably buried among 100 other pages on confluence and they don’t even know it exists

If the comment is in the code they will see it and update accordingly

arduinomancer··on Accidentally making a language, for an engine, for a game
Ya this is what I was thinking as well, the unique thing is that making the tools and doing the work are the exact same process

Plus its just very easy to work on a tool, I don't need to go buy a bunch of materials or anything

arduinomancer··on Accidentally making a language, for an engine, for a game
I don’t get why are programmers so obsessed with the tools they use for the job?

More than any profession

arduinomancer··on Ask HN: Why can't cloud providers offer a prepay option?
Used to work for one of the big ones

IMO the reason they don't do this is because you would have to design every system with billing as a critical path dependency

For example say you have a service that lets people run batch jobs

What happens if the pre-pay credit of the account runs out mid way through the job?

Does your job service have to constantly check the remaining balance as its running and abort halfway through? What happens if the account balance service goes down?

Or would you somehow reserve the credit before the job starts? Well in that case how do you know how long the job will run?

Its possible to do in theory but it would be a pain to support

arduinomancer··on Ask HN: How does a CPU communicate with a GPU?
Is it very in-depth or more for layman readers?
arduinomancer··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Honestly the #1 thing that worked for me was not trying to do blind weight loss

You need logging to be able to "debug" the weight loss

If you don't have logging you won't have a good idea of why it didn't work if you fail

Logging meaning tracking calories

There are a lot of heuristics like avoiding food X, or intermittent fasting but these are all just proxies for eating less calories

arduinomancer··on Ford to Impose Non-Negotiable Pricing on EV Sales as Part of Model E Plan
Test drives?

I don’t get how people buy a car without trying it

arduinomancer··on Ask HN: What's the biggest problem you got during work from home?
IMO zoom team socials just don't work

You can't have a normal conversation with 15 people in a meeting where only one person can talk at a time

Lots of awkward silence

arduinomancer··on Over-reliance on CGI in movies
> Yet despite his best efforts, I cannot help but notice that digital post-processing seems to have ruined Villeuneve’s more realistic vision

I get the criticism of bad/overused CGI these days but the post-processing of Dune is a really bad example here.

I'm a big fan of both movies but the post effect on Dune is clearly an artistic choice that makes it look more dramatic and dreamy.

If it looked like Lawrence of Arabia it would totally change the vibe of the movie.

Why would I want it to look like it took place on Earth?

arduinomancer··on We have jetpacks and we do not care
Isn't it a huge problem that a jetpack is not fail-safe?

With an airplane/paramotor you can still glide safely down if your engine dies.

What would happen if the jetpack engine fails mid air?

arduinomancer··on A Minimum Viable Computer, or Linux for $15
Do you mean the keyboard being split across the screen would be hard to use for those people?
arduinomancer··on Meta Unveils New AI Supercomputer
Well the theory for the end-to-end image based self-driving models is that they are supposed to cover that.

The reasoning is that given enough training data the system would know the pedestrian is going to jump out or the cyclist is going to fall just based on sheer volume of training examples. It would have seen that scenario tons of times in the image data.

Whether that will actually work is the question though

arduinomancer··on Is old music killing new music?
I feel like this is probably just more and more older people adopting streaming platforms as their way of listening

It was likely unbalanced in the beginning when these platforms first came out

arduinomancer··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
IMO the reason compensation is so high is not that everyone is really greedy or money-focused

There's a lot of pressure to make more now days because of big student loans, skyrocketing housing prices, inflation

It feels like you need to switch jobs just to keep up now days

arduinomancer··on Ask HN: Would you pass an interview for your current position?
Nope

I only got in because I happened to do the exact LeetCode questions asked the night before, and the questions relied on knowing special tricks

I really doubt when people say they got in to LC heavy companies without studying much, its more likely they just lucked out and got a question they happened to be able to solve

For any candidate you can create an arbitrarily hard/tricky LC question they won't get

arduinomancer··on (Unofficial) Insider guide to tech interviews
What I don't get is a lot of big companies only do team matching after you have already passed the interview

In that case how could they do domain-knowledge interviews if they don't even know what you will be working on?

arduinomancer··on An Algorithm for Passing Programming Interviews (2020)
Oh interesting, I'll have to try that, didn't know there was a built-in one
arduinomancer··on An Algorithm for Passing Programming Interviews (2020)
Wouldn't that mean you have to implement the binary tree as part of your solution?

Seems way easier/time efficient to just use the built-in heap/priority queue of the language standard lib

arduinomancer··on An Algorithm for Passing Programming Interviews (2020)
Yes, you need to pull a George Costanza and look/sound really annoyed while you code the solution
arduinomancer··on An Algorithm for Passing Programming Interviews (2020)
Interviews are really a dumb game these days so if you want to really game it you can go with a statistical approach:

* Practice questions by company on LeetCode, sort by frequency of last 6 months and work down the list, do maybe 75-100, the list updates once a week

* Search for the company on the LeetCode forums and sort by most recent. If a question is not on LC yet it will likely get posted there, so you can get really fresh intel.

I've read of people doing this and getting like 6/6 questions they've seen before.

arduinomancer··on How did software development end up dominated by web dev?
The "how" is really that computers just got powerful enough and internet speed got fast enough to a point where there is no longer a need to have a native app for most companies

Users already have to go to your website: why even bother having an extra step of downloading your app if they don't need to?

arduinomancer··on A deep dive into an NSO zero-click iMessage exploit: Remote Code Execution
Just to understand, what is the blast radius of this exploit?

Do they just have access to the whole process memory of the iMessage process?

Or does it go beyond that?

arduinomancer··on Facebook exec blames society for COVID misinformation
I feel like a lot of people think "the internet" is toxic

When in reality maybe humans are just bad and the internet just exposed it

Before the internet there was just no way to see it

arduinomancer··on Ask HN: Have you ever refused to interview because of ethical reasons?
Apologies for the cynical take but all these micro-optimizing purity decisions have no effect

Real change comes from government policy, not individuals, and not companies feeling guilty about themselves

There's nothing wrong with not wanting to work for these companies but don't be under the illusion that you declining to interview is going to somehow bubble up to senior leadership and make them think "gee we should stop being evil"

arduinomancer··on Ask HN: What are some must read books?
I don't get why this book is so hyped

Did anyone else read it and think "well duh" to most of it?

Seemed like common sense

arduinomancer··on Ask HN: What are some must read books?
Just to add a counter opinion: I found Moby Dick a real slog to get through

It has very detailed descriptions of whaling which I didn't find interesting

arduinomancer··on Evidence for the “great resignation” is thin on the ground
I always try to look at incentives

If the "great resignation" is not real, who is benefiting from that narrative?

arduinomancer··on Impossible Foods brings total funding to $2B with new $500M raise
I've tried both Beyond/Impossible

I found impossible tastes more like real meat, reminded me of a cheap frozen grocery store patty

To me Beyond tasted less like real meat but had a better flavor/spices

arduinomancer··on Impossible Foods brings total funding to $2B with new $500M raise
> inhumanely scaled monocrop farming

And what do you think the animals are fed with?

If you're going to have 8 billion people eating meat do you really think there's going to be less environmental impact growing the food for the animals + the impact of the animals themselves compared to just growing vegetables?

I feel like meat scales even worse due to efficiency losses
