Presumably plastic surgery next for kids. Trickle down, like eg mobile phones, at first for a few adults, then many adults, a few children, then many children. As things become cheaper they spread to the younger; things including practices. Enter moral philosophy, a topic too big for chit chat.
Weapons of mass destruction? Governments lie. Politicians don't stop lying. Look up a video of British politician Matt Hancock "crying" about covid - it's brazen. I understand why people push back; I don't believe a word that comes out of governments. To what degree (ahem) are the meteorologists at fault? I don't know, but I'm reminded of Neil Ferguson whose models were news here on HN and elsewhere. Scientists get grants just as politicians get lobbied. Trust is hard won, and you don't get it by forcing 15 minute cities on people while private jets are free to fly.
Away from the story a bit, looking at the US from afar I see millions of people entering the US from the southern border - how is this expected to play out? Will these people fit fairly easily into the economy, or will they likely be resorting to crime to get by?
I afraid at this point, this topic being so old now, that anyone still using google products is a bit of a laggard. People have been going google-free for ages because of the ever worsening experience - search this site, you don't need me to provide refs.
The Economist - I don't know what their actual thinking is behind this, but as usual they should probably rename themselves to The Marxist. On this occasion though, most comments seem to be in agreement against The Economist.
I don't trust the pharmaceutical industry. I'll take the natural sickness. My perspective has enhanced since seeing my covid vaccinated colleagues regularly miserably sick, and the unvaccinated merely suspect they might have had covid, but barely noticed. I'm not convinced the industry are entirely clear on what they're doing, only approximately. I understand psychiatric drugs are similarly "seems to work, ish". I'm generally unimpressed with the medical industry's progress.
My tabs are mostly related to a current project, or topic - I find Opera's workspaces are great for this. But I use firefox. I've written a slightly cumbersome but necessary cli tool to extract tabs from the session file and add project or topic tags, then open a filtered list in a window. I find this preferable to all the firefox workflows I've tried. All I wanted for christmas was firefox workspaces.
I know someone who works in the digital id space, and the businesses pushing this stuff at the governments are far more interested in their business than your rights. And governments have a habit of slipping in things they find convenient. With some insider insight I'd suggest pushing back very hard against this sort of thing.
Wealth and privileged upbringing do not result in intelligence. On the contrary, children brought up being able to goof around in comfy surroundings often turn out to be mediocre regardless of the standard of their education.
Correct. It's so that non-technical and negligibly technical managers can manage junior devs, including 40 year old ex-lawyers with two years of scripting, and boot campers. For the experienced it's a disaster of childishness, obstacles and frustrations.
