archmikhail··on Ask HN: File Management Software for PhD
Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't see how those are very relevant.
archmikhail··on Ask HN: File Management Software for PhD
It doesn't have to be self hosing.

FileRun looks promising. It looks like I'd have to develop the composite object feature, but there's enough already here to make that a less-time consuming task.

archmikhail··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
Analysts remain "concerned" about $AAPL growth because world forests cannot produce enough paper for how much cash $AAPL continues to print.
archmikhail··on A Message to Our Customers
Save people like me a trip to the Google: NSL = A national security letter (NSL) is an administrative subpoena issued by the United States federal government to gather information for national security purposes. NSLs do not require prior approval from a judge.
archmikhail··on Palantir Has Raised $880M at a $20B Valuation
Is this real or an honest typo?
archmikhail··on Palantir Has Raised $880M at a $20B Valuation
My roommate interned there, and still had little idea what they do.
archmikhail··on Reporters in Las Vegas Try to Crack Case of Who Owns Their Newspaper
Kim Jong Un.
archmikhail··on Show HN: Ponzi.es – Startup sticker ponzi scheme
I'm really surprised how few visitors were from the bay area, is that normal? Does anyone know the location breakdown of hacker news visitors?

Edit: oh that was at 6am PT

archmikhail··on Samsung to pay Apple $548M in patent dispute
Sarcasm, bro.
archmikhail··on Apple in Talks with US Banks to Develop Mobile Person-To-Person Payment Service
You probably don't live in the bay area.
archmikhail··on Gmail, We Need to Talk
May I add, the redesigned YouTube app on iOS is horrendous. These UI regressions have to catch up to Google eventually, right?
archmikhail··on Gmail, We Need to Talk
If you have an Apple Watch, that is a must since there's no Gmail watch app. Checking email on the Watch is surprisingly useful.
archmikhail··on Gmail, We Need to Talk
Apple makes money on hardware, making mail better on iOS won't really attract more Android users to switch IMO.
archmikhail··on Gmail, We Need to Talk
The last thing Google wants is to lose your personal data. They don't want you deleting anything.
archmikhail··on Driverless Navy Boats Programmed to Swarm Like Bees (2014)
This is all fine and dandy, until the software is hacked and the swarming boats turn on the ship they were protecting. I don't trust the US military with making such a technology.
archmikhail··on Mission Motors didn't close because of Apple
This is exactly right. I had detailed knowledge of an acquisition and all media articles about it were so completely wrong that it was offensive.
archmikhail··on Mission Motors didn't close because of Apple
So now who do you trust? This guy (whom I know nothing about) or the several media articles (whose writers and sources I know nothing about)? This is the problem with how news is delivered in our age. Back in the day, you primarily just knew the news of your town, and to verify the claims you could walk over to the subjects and ask them.
archmikhail··on Mission Motors didn't close because of Apple
This article is saying that was not the case. The company was failing already and so understandably the top talent went elsewhere, such as Apple.
archmikhail··on Google Launches a Developer Boot Camp, Promising Jobs for Graduates
Yea but that title wouldn't get as many clicks.
archmikhail··on Tim Cook Says Apple Music Has 6.5M Paying Users
It's a bit early for Tim to be dropping hints about the Apple Car. I'm afraid interest will die down after waiting for a couple years, while expectations will become unreasonable.
archmikhail··on OS X El Capitan License: in Plain English
Wow, that was really not as bad as I thought.
archmikhail··on Blowing the Whistle on the UC Berkeley Mathematics Department
I had her for a class a few years ago, and like Coward, she was an excellent teacher who didn't care for the norms of the department. She was actually working on a new textbook at the time which was all about teaching the fundamentals of mathematics in a completely different way to give a better foundation for higher level mathematics. At the time, she had just taken a small group of non-STEM majors, and using her book, got them to graduate level math in just 1.5 years. Sadly I haven't seen the book released, but one can only hope the work of these talented individuals will not be hindered by silly politics.
archmikhail··on The State of LTE in September 2015
The economic benefit of vastly improving data speeds across the country far out weighs the costs of improving the network. As the tech capital of the world, the US should not be #10 in LTE coverage.

archmikhail··on Android libstagefright still exploitable
Even if Google patches this, there's an incredible delay in getting the patch to users. Android in fundamentally flawed in this respect.

archmikhail··on Candid Intern at MongoDB
Q: What do you love most about MongoDB? A: There are a lot of implicit assumptions in that question. . .
