arcanon··on Show HN: Lona – Framework for responsive web apps in full Python without JS
Static languages are good for beginners. Like training wheels for programmers.
arcanon··on Show HN: Lona – Framework for responsive web apps in full Python without JS
If only there was some project that was a go webserver with a client that was like some sort of python/javascript hybrid…
arcanon··on Show HN: Lona – Framework for responsive web apps in full Python without JS
Havent you heard? If you want www devs to use it you have to graft on some hideous typesystem along with jsx.

Would be hilarious if someone read this and thought “you know I should add static types to python”

arcanon··on Ask HN: Senior Software Engineer to Engineering Manager
Management is about running meetings and making accurate schedules. Do you run some right now?
arcanon··on Observation-based early-warning signals for a collapse of the Gulf Stream
Im sure it wont be like a biblical plague, but the IPCC report that came out moments ago reiterated the 20 year to 1.5 C+ timeline. What matters is if a crop failure hits a nation with few friends and lots of nukes.
arcanon··on Observation-based early-warning signals for a collapse of the Gulf Stream
Thinking about this more… This depends on electric flight. You cant stop the refineries with uavs powered by their targets product. It may be that electric flight is the cornerstone to emission prevention.
arcanon··on Observation-based early-warning signals for a collapse of the Gulf Stream
What about high resolution satellite pollution maps and airstrikes? If the combustion engines or the refineries are not destroyed, they will be used. We could start slowly with only the dirtiest targets. Doing this now is less aggressive then what will happen after global crop failures.
arcanon··on Ask HN: Those who work at Facebook, Amazon, Palantir, etc. Do you feel guilt?
If that dude can program a UAV to be the responsible party I think that means he also created AI.
arcanon··on How a fake network pushes pro-China propaganda
Yes, very excited to become a Chinese communist vassal state and follow the north korean model.
arcanon··on Where are the robotic bricklayers?
I mean once the boston dynamics stuff gets good enough… it will. To be frank, I want my Jetsons robot maid.
arcanon··on China quietly sets new 'buy Chinese' targets for state companies
You missed the most important one. India. But yea I don’t see Oceania uniting anytime soon.

What’s going to happen with the demographics in China?

arcanon··on Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse already sucks
Cool. It seems like a big step to go from that to where the game engine is a part of the www itself.

I guess the point is that wont happen? The browser just becomes a way to download unreal/unity/… clients written in C++.

arcanon··on New Leadership at Blizzard
Great point. I think it depends on if the new execs view themselves as “creators” or “fixers”. Fixers can thrive in this situation.
arcanon··on New Leadership at Blizzard
I like the bit about building the best performing team at the expense of the individual. Seems like something you could say to let down a report in a 1 on 1. Im going to use that from now on, whenever it serves my purpose. Thanks!
arcanon··on New Leadership at Blizzard
Activision didn’t ruin Blizzard. Blizzard ruined themselves by giving up control of their destiny to another. Such things affect the way you think, to be not independent.
arcanon··on Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse already sucks
There is a wide spectrum between sending 3d models to web pages and The Matrix. There are 2 things going on here: 1) making gpu more accessible to the www 2) the headsets/glasses hardware. Everyone seems caught up on 2 when I think the more important thing is 1. I hope the future is to do 3d dev in www by default rather than depending on exporting a unity/unreal/etc thing. I can see www replacing a lot desktop 3d content creation apps if that came to pass.
arcanon··on Billions in 'unknown' funds flowing into Canada's housing market [video]
I mean all the farmable land will be up there in a few decades. Seems like a good investment.
arcanon··on Americans' life ratings reach record high
Antiphilosophy works pretty well for the physicists.
arcanon··on Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise
Doubtful its for the same reasons as the original though. Maybe alcohol companies are seeing revenue decline?

And just in case you were wondering the original reefer madness was about racism.

arcanon··on Google parts with Cloud VP over his manifesto renouncing his antisemitism
Sometimes I think the only reason platitudes like “bring your whole self to work” exist is just to weed out ppl who are dumb enough to fall for it. Never break the act if you wanna stay on top it seems.
arcanon··on A Roadmap to Interstellar Flight (2016)
It seems trivializing and like an existential crisis to have all of a humans being encoded in a computer. Once you have that, why even keep it running for all time as it is? Its just a version of software you could make changes to. We are probably not as glorious as we could be to become immortal as we are.
arcanon··on A Roadmap to Interstellar Flight (2016)
I think there is one more step change theoretically possible in terms of energy output which is based on anti-quark collisions. We need to understand QCD better. Its hard to know when breakthroughs will happen. Maybe its already happened and we just havent heard about it yet!

We also dont know how to model quantum gravity still. That seems pretty fundamental.

Im optimistic there will be physicists who find something new and whacky that no one could predict.

arcanon··on I am Palestinian. Here’s how Israel silences us on social media
I feel like you linked me to something that proved my point. This seems like politics without evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. How much time has been spent moderating around this? Was it worth it?

Anyways i hope rick and morty succeed in their mission tonight.

arcanon··on There Are Aliens, but Probably Not Here
Nothing is scarce in space. There is limitless energy in the atom’s nucleus. We just dont have an effective power plant yet.
arcanon··on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Exist; They Must Be Banned
Initiating swarms of slaughter bots could be a warcrime.
arcanon··on ‘Positive deviants’: Why rebellious workers spark great ideas
Who exactly is characterizing the workers with great ideas as rebellious, here? The real story is always parasitic toxic management. An idea’s existence is enough to threaten power structures.
arcanon··on I’m a Physicist Who Searches for Aliens. U.F.O.s Don’t Impress Me
When I built mazes for gene knockout mice, we did it for addiction/pain research. The mazes themselves are really cool. You get to program all these little doors and sequences. Come for the research, stay for the fun.
arcanon··on The AskHistorians subreddit banned Holocaust deniers (2018)
Imagine growing up in Germany and having your history be whitewashed so you barely know the atrocities your society committed... oh wait! I’m from California! We had our own genocide of the Natives that was sanctioned by the gold rush government. Anyone remember panning for gold in elementary school? Yeah... those were bad times if you weren’t white. Also, the California Genocide was closer in time to the Holocaust than the Holocaust is to today.

Do have to hand it to Eichmann though. Totally different level of scale of atrocity...

Still should probably get a new name for the 49ers football team...

arcanon··on Mars sucks
Arable land is outdated thinking. Its time to go vertical farming.
arcanon··on Mars sucks
Its not about mars. Its about the spaceships that get us there. The best thing for humanity is to live in spaceships.

More important than mars will be a space shipyard in space that has a renewable environment with vertical farms inside it capable of supporting a community.
