arayh··on The boss who put everyone on 70K
While I admittedly do not know any of the inside details, but if you read up on some of the "Glass Door" reviews on Gravity Payments, you'll see a trend of reviews commenting on the cult-like behaviour of the company. I'd suggest doing your own research on companies you apply to before you get mesmerized by their media publicity.
arayh··on Show HN: Who Arms the World?
There appears to be a glitch / bug here. When the map first loads, it states the data is for 2018 and lists 50 countries, but the 49th country is blank and there are only 34 circles on the map. When you switch the year to anything else and switch back to 2018, the list has been truncated to 34 countries.
arayh··on Court: Suspicionless Searches of Travelers’ Phones and Laptops Unconstitutional
According this article (https://www.businessinsider.com/us-gun-death-murder-risk-sta...) your chances of dying from a motor vehicle incident is approximately three times higher than dying from a gun assault.
arayh··on Show HN: My first game, minimal procgen gravity golf inspired by Desert Golfing
Great game! Reminds me of Gravitee which was also a blast to play, but requires Flash https://www.kongregate.com/games/funkypear/gravitee
arayh··on Checkm8 – Bootrom exploit for many iOS devices
It exploits the bootrom, which is by definition unpatchable.

arayh··on Where Dollar Bills Come From
Polymer banknotes are perhaps more environmentally friendly compared to its counterpart due to its durability (resulting in fewer banknotes being manufactured). They can also be recycled after its life in circulation. On the other hand, cotton/linen banknotes are typically shredded and landfilled after their circulation life.
arayh··on Japanese anime studio Khara moving to Blender
Ironically, it would seem that their name Khara was derived from a greek word (χαρά) meaning "joy".

arayh··on User Inyerface – A worst-practice UI experiment
"Holding ALT to scroll faster is cheating and not allowed." This is interesting, since ALT + scrollwheel on Firefox is supposed to move forward and backward in your page history, but in the terms and conditions, it helps you scroll at normal speed.

doors can still be unlocked... this "article" is very misleading.
arayh··on GB Studio – Retro adventure game creator for Game Boy
Looks awesome! I noticed that it doesn't yet support in-game progress save functionality yet, but will definitely give it a try when it does!

Ah yes, the good ol' PNG transparency hack is included in there. The bitter-sweet memories of web development in the 90s. Too bad the only working hack for fixing PNG gamma was to remove the gamma chunk from the image file itself.
arayh··on AlphaStar: Mastering the Real-Time Strategy Game StarCraft II
Sometimes you may see a photon cannon used to deny an enemy's natural expansion to try to gain an economic advantage. Depending on the map and matchup, it may also complicate the enemy's early attempts at scouting and aggression.

Typically, you don't see more than 1-2 photo cannons, because you don't usually want to "over-invest" and lose what advantage you gain.

arayh··on Count the people around you by monitoring wifi signals
It sounds like a lot of people aren't too familiar with the "people counter".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_counter

It's commonly used by some retail and shopping malls to "estimate" traffic and conversion. It's great for determining peak times and visit duration. This kind of technology has been commercialized for some time now.

arayh··on Using Perl 6 Grammars: Decompressing Zelda 3 GFX
I think the Zelda 3 (NES) prototype is largely considered a hoax, as far as I can tell, but this page does reference a Zelda 3 for the SNES that was scrapped and some of its ideas were repurposed for Link to the Past.

arayh··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
Admittedly, there is definitely a precedent for youngsters who fall for fake news. I am reminded that a number of under-65s thought they could charge their iPhone in a household microwave, even though you would think that common sense would dictate otherwise.

arayh··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
Although the study mentions that older people share more fake news regardless of education.
arayh··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
I agree. Younger people are more likely to have experienced more fake news being revealed as falsified information in many forms, including fake social media accounts, photoshopped images and modified videos. I feel that this induces greater skepticism and awareness of fake news.
arayh··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
Study says that damage to the prefrontal cortex in older adults can increase susceptibility to fraud and scams, which may be related to why older people share more fake news.

arayh··on Gaming worth more than video and music combined
So this is mostly a confirmation that the "loot box" monetization model has been resoundingly successful? This controversial model exploits gamer psychology, is sometimes implemented along the veins of "pay to win", and is seen by some as a sort of in-game form of gambling.
