ararar··on French prosecutors say Telegram CEO freed from custody, will appear in court
"French prosecutors say Telegram CEO freed from custody, will appear in court"

No, he won't.

ararar··on Why Did CrowdStrike Update Only Hit Windows? Blame the EU, Microsoft Says
And that explains the not-in-the-EU affected computers how?
ararar··on Solved? The Roman Dodecahedron [video]
I don't think that anyone before, in or after Roman times would run gold wire like that through the holes. Why scratch up the work? Why abrade away gold flakes? Is there gold residue on the artifacts? It would've been noted.
ararar··on FTC says Amazon executives destroyed potential evidence using apps like Signal
Wow. The companies I've worked at only kept old emails if there was a litigation hold. Otherwise, the email retention policy was enforced. It seems to me a double edged sword that slightly favors the deleter.

I think that you will find that your industry is an outlier.

ararar··on FTC says Amazon executives destroyed potential evidence using apps like Signal
Most Fortune 500 companies have (I am extrapolating wildly here since I haven't worked at all of them) email retention policies that specify that emails will not be kept past a certain time after reception. So when an opposing lawyer requires the emails that were sent a year ago ... well, those were deleted as per policy. It's weird that if the companies had a policy to immediately delete them it would be "bad" but if they delete them after 30 days due to "storage" reasons and a clear, global, openly stated policy, it's OK. It doesn't stop someone from stuffing old emails in a folder.
ararar··on Anger is eliminated with the disposal of a paper written because of provocation
What if this is the basis of "magic"? The secret power of curses that were burnt or cast into a lake or cave that "worked" by diminishing the anger in the caster rather than cursing the target.
ararar··on It's Been 2 Months. Why Can't NASA Open the Asteroid Sample Container?
This has been going on for a while: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdeburg_hemispheres
ararar··on Ask HN: Which book do you keep asking people to read?
"The Library at Mount Char" by Scott Hawkins.

His first novel. Very original, not quite sci-fi, not quite fantasy. Some rough edges. Excellent.

ararar··on Oughtred Society Archive of Slide Rule Collections
Concise Co. of Japan still makes slide rulers albeit only circular ones (https://www.sliderule.tokyo/products/list.php).

One prominent industry that still uses slide rulers is aviation. They use "flight computers".

ararar··on More evidence that humans were in North America over 20k years ago
OK. Assume that the evidence is strong and true. That still doesn't mean that there's been continuous habitation. It could be evidence of a failed colonization followed by crickets.
ararar··on A brief history of insults
Seems like someone may have the pleasure of becoming interested in the matter and going further. Perhaps they may resurrect Maledicta, the journal of verbal aggression. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maledicta. I remember going through the collection of issues of the journal at the Perry Castañeda library at the University of Texas-Austin many years ago. I highly recommend it. Read about things like Spanish potentiation of insults (like raising to a power), and other things I forget. The only reason I can recall Spanish potentiation is that I speak Spanish and I never realized such a thing existed.

There was, of course, an article (or issue?) dedicated to "your momma" jokes. The most memorable one was an Italian one that goes:

If the streets were paved with cocks, your momma would walk on her ass.

ararar··on Ukraine dam supplying water to nuclear plant and Crimea is breached
Everyone has known that the instant Russia felt threatened that the dam would (probably) be destroyed. The consequences are horrible for Ukraine but not so much for Russia. They have known that the counter offensive would be coming. Why not lay down some propaganda now for something that someone else should take the blame for in the future? With the help of a корисний ідіот of course.
ararar··on Scientists warned about climate change in 1965
Same situation for antibiotics. Fleming, in the actual Nobel prize acceptance speech, warned:

"It is not difficult to make microbes resistant to penicillin in the laboratory by exposing them to concentrations not sufficient to kill them, and the same thing has occasionally happened in the body." <https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/medicine/1945/fleming/lect...>

And so today we have infections resistant to practically every known antibiotic. And it's getting worse.

ararar··on Ask HN: What are the most eye-opening textbooks you have ever read?
There is a nice reproduction of Byrne's colorful take on the first six books of the Elements.See https://www.c82.net/euclid/ .
ararar··on The cost of cheap TVs
Just get a "display". See https://youtu.be/-epPf7D8oMk where Jeff Geerling talks about how great a TV his non-TV is. He has an NEC UHD Professional Display M551. He gets to control the software on the embedded Raspberry Pi. It's about $1700 but I think it's worth it. Product link https://www.sharpnecdisplays.us/products/displays/m551
ararar··on How We Would Know When China Is Preparing to Invade Taiwan
I meant that China would take back those parts of Manchuria and nearby lands it lost to Russia in 1860 the second Russia commits to total war on its western front. Taiwan is too difficult: crossing the ocean, powerful allies, entrenched defences. But Vladivostok and the Amur river region is defended by an overhyped, depleted, substandard, number-2-only-inside-Ukraine, army. It's just as good an offering to the people as Taiwan would be and a good legacy for Xi.
ararar··on How We Would Know When China Is Preparing to Invade Taiwan
Taiwan? Looking at the board, seeing what's happening in the west, I would keep an eye on the level of loss the Russians are willing to endure before probable tactical nuke usage. Just before that point, I would look to China's northern border to see if they are about to roll north to undo the unequal Treaty of Aigun.
ararar··on Nord Stream AG operator says looking into decline in pressure in Nord Stream 1
Shouldn't the EU physically destroy the Nord Stream 1 and 2 terminals and sever the pipelines at sea so that they become useless? Isn't Putin betting that the gas will flow again with all that that implies?
ararar··on Turns are better than radians
Out of curiosity, given a degree/calendar/time system could one localize the culture that created it?
ararar··on Ask HN: Which book would you pick to re-read for the rest of your life?
Don Quixote de la Mancha - M. de Cervantes Saavedra

A hundred years of Solitude - G. G. Márquez

Foucault's Pendulum - U. Eco

Cryptonomicon - N. Stephenson

The Dispossessed - U. K. Le Guin

ararar··on Mammals can breathe through their intestines (2021)
Why can't this be repurposed as a lung cleanse? I imagine that heavy smokers' lungs (or coal miners') could benefit from a wash and rinse, perhaps with some vibration assistance. With a medical team standing by to resuscitate.
ararar··on Ask HN: Why aren't all students using the WYSIWYG TeXmacs for math assignments?
Well, this is exactly what it is for. Neither LaTeX nor Texmacs help out in the research phase. They are document preparation systems (although Texmacs could be used as a front end to some CAS's)
ararar··on Ask HN: Why aren't all students using the WYSIWYG TeXmacs for math assignments?
TeXmacs has nothing to do with either Emacs or TeX. It's a standalone wysiwyg editor, like MS Word or OO Writer.
ararar··on Planned Harvard balloon test in Sweden stirs solar geoengineering unease
And they are neighbors of Holland the country raised from the sea by engineers.
ararar··on Ask HN: Is lifting Linux FS drivers to user-space possible?
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_in_Userspace
ararar··on Ask HN: Can we adapt AlphaZero's self-play technique for better human learning?
I think there is a possibility of applying machine learning to teaching humans in the sense of continuous, algorithmic tuning/personalization of lesson plans/teaching strategies to accelerate human learning ... as a teacher's aide in other words.
ararar··on Ask HN: Can we adapt AlphaZero's self-play technique for better human learning?
You might be thinking of R.L. Moore and his "Moore Method" except it was only used in a teaching context, not in day to day work. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore_method
ararar··on Why Don't We Build a Telescope Without Mirrors or Lenses?
I thought they were going to talk about diffractive optic telescopes which require neither lenses or mirrors. See more here https://str.llnl.gov/str/March03/pdfs/03_03.2.pdf. Someone did not do their research! The aragoscope is mentioned in the Spacetime episode mentioned elsewhere here.
ararar··on Ask HN: What to look for in a cryptocurrency?
I don't understand why we insist on tokens if we have blockchains. A blockchain renders tokens, whether virtual or physical, obsolete by replacing them with a simple scalar associated with an account.
ararar··on Green tea compound may halt molecular cause of often-fatal condition
You might be drinking too much. See http://www.livescience.com/50347-iced-tea-kidney-failure.htm.... That person was drinking about 2.5 times your intake but it might wise to throttle back a bit. You might not reach kidney failure but might reach levels that impair function or which leave you vulnerable to toxic oxalate buildup if you eat other oxalate rich foods.
