arama471··on ISPs Say They Don’t Make Enough Money
That's simply not true. Dems are overwhelmingly in support of net neutrality and under Obama's administration it was not repealed.

Both sides ARE NOT the same on this issue.

arama471··on Elephant 'smoking' footage baffles experts
How is the the youtuber making sure the cat still gets stuff like taurine?

I ask because I've always heard that cats are obligate carnivores and cannot live off a vegan/vegetarian diet[1].

arama471··on Wikipedia Co-Founder Creates Alternative Wikipedia
So it looks like its starting off as a clone of Wikipedia but with less features? They made it more modern looking (which is actually really quite nice) but they did so by removing stuff like citations, which is really important when anyone can edit the content (the ability to check the source for a given statement is really nice).

In fact, how do they know which sources to remove from the references when doing a large edit of a page? Does the editor have to go through all the references and figure out exactly which statements depended on which reference? Or is there just a "any reference is a good reference" policy and once added to an article they stay there forever?

Also the reference section allows people to vote on references? Why?

Also no random article button.

arama471··on Imzy wants to be a kinder, gentler version of Reddit
But he's still the republican candidate (who will also unfortunately be the republican president of these united states). The issue here is taking all of the moderate republicans and putting them in a situation where they only feel welcomed by the extreme variant, and limiting their ability to see coherent counter arguments to what the extreme variant says.

If we set up this dichotomy we will create many problems for ourselves down the line.

arama471··on ‘Diamond-age’ of power generation as nuclear batteries developed
I think you are misunderstanding the tech in question. This doesn't work on all radioactive waste, just the graphite (which admittedly is a decent portion of it). You'd still want secure facilities to store what you haven't recycled.
arama471··on ‘Diamond-age’ of power generation as nuclear batteries developed
Why would anyone attack that facility? Its extremely easy to secure - If you somehow neutralize everyone protecting it you still wont get in and out with any meaningful amount of material before a military response comes in and removes your ability to actually do anything.

Note that Yucca Mountain doesn't just have piles of fissile material - all the waste is in the same concrete capsules they arrived in. The ones that need a crane to be moved[1][2].

You could argue that these will fail before we know what to do with them and that they will leak radioactive material over time, but that still wouldn't make it a good terrorist target.

[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_cask_storage

NOTE: Sources don't say that you cant move these without cranes, they just say that these are larger than a person and made of steel and reinforced concrete so I thought it would be a safe assumption these are a pain to move.

arama471··on Hacking 27% of the Web via WordPress Auto-Update – Wordfence
It's amazing that there is so much trust put into WordPress's security.

Reading about how WordPress updates can be used to compromise websites got me thinking; does anyone know how people ensure that Canonical won't push out a signed update that installs a backdoor to their servers?

This seems like it would be very tedious to do (recompiling and checking they're the same), but also more and more important now that major governments have shown their willingness to force companies to betray their customers.

If the open source nature of Canonical stops it from being able to push out poisoned updates (I suppose all mirrors compile stuff themselves and verify against a hash so it would be found out quick), how would one deal with securing non open source software stuff like Windows? Do you just not trust any machine (virtual or not) in your server farm running Windows?

arama471··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him
So /r/pizzagate was a subreddit convinced they'd found evidence of a pedophile ring in the government and more specifically implicating Hilary Clinton. They were recently shut down because they kept publishing people's information (which is against reddit ToS _even if said info is publicly available_). This prompted them to assume reddit admins were part of said ring. I assume /u/spez has been receiving accusations since.

I think that's an advertisement, likely masquerading as a normal link. I initially thought so because I didn't see anything with an odd link in the top left with adblock on, but now even having turned it off I see no such link.

arama471··on How Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, Restricted Advertising for Trump’s Campaign
It's interesting to see his perspective on it, but I can see how Twitter might want to disallow it for both candidates. It's one thing to help something trend like you would an ad, but you don't see the kind of negative advertisements for companies that you do for candidates.

Honestly I'm most surprised by HRC's campaign not asking to use emojis in their hashtags - that seems exactly like something her campaign would have done.

arama471··on Y Combinator blacklists founder of Gab.ai
Unfortunately (as one might be able to tell from the election results) not everyone hates Trump. In fact his supporters would likely make a sizeable consumer base.

arama471··on Why Stack Overflow Doesn’t Care About Ad Blockers
People who use AdBlockers already have that button. Seriously, they have very non-intrusive ads; If you want to block those you'll definitive be wanting to block others.

People on SO can be reasonably expected to know how to get that button (i.e. can you google how to install AdBlock).

arama471··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
You misinterpret proc0's comment: they are saying there is no excuse to treat Neil deGrasse Tyson as a shoplifter because of his race, that there is no excuse to ever decide that all people of a certain race or any category are all something or share something (in their comment "assholes" in yours "shoplifting").

Basically racism (using this definition: [1]) is never OK, regardless to which race and with which attributes.

arama471··on How Facebook makes us dumber
I disagree with Tumblr and Reddit being compared with Facebook in this regard, and completley disagree that HN is in anyway similar in this regard. Facebook will automatically stop showing you things you disagree with, whilst it has to be a conscious choice on your part on Reddit and Facebook.

On HN you don't actually get to choose the content in any meaningful way, and therefore have no means of creating an echo chamber for yourself through other means then down voting.
