ar7hur··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
I like this article, but it took decades for cars to take over: we needed to build vehicles, build roads, build up gas production and distribution... as Bill Gates wrote, one of the differences with the AI disruption is how fast it's coming, since it's almost immaterial (except data centers of course). It may be too fast for humans to adapt like they did in the previous revolutions.
ar7hur··on I admire Fabrice Bellard. He is almost certainly a better overall programmer
I emailed Fabrice in early 2013 when I was starting wit.ai. He replied quickly with a very nice, humble, valuable response.
ar7hur··on How and where will agents ship software?
I've been using InstantDB for two projects for one year and it's awesome.
ar7hur··on Crossing the impossible FFI boundary, and my gradual descent into madness
> Anyone trying to make a new mainstream language is completely insane, unless they're backed by a huge corporation. There are only two exceptions in the last 25 years that come close: Scala and Kotlin.

And Clojure! (also a JVM language)

ar7hur··on SF startup bosses illegally peddled $100M in Adderall, Feds say
They should also hold prescribers accountable. As a certified physician you hold powers and responsibilities. In many countries these prescribers would lose their licence.
ar7hur··on Add coffee stains to LaTeX documents (2021)
This is why I read HN every day.

ar7hur··on Intel One Mono Typeface
I don't understand how a hardware company who just reported its largest quarterly loss in history with revenue down 36% year-over-year [1] is working on fonts. Or maybe this explains that.

ar7hur··on Google Bard waitlist
+1 I came here to write this comment word for word. The speed of IBM-ization of Google is astounding.
ar7hur··on Show HN: Using GPT-3 and Whisper to save doctors’ time
I understand your concerns. Our objectives are, on the contrary, to reduce the doctor/patient distance that was created by EHRs and all the required administrative processes. We already measure that when AI takes care of this stuff, doctors do better engage with patients.
ar7hur··on Show HN: Using GPT-3 and Whisper to save doctors’ time
Yes we are! https://www.nabla.com/careers/
ar7hur··on Show HN: Using GPT-3 and Whisper to save doctors’ time
Thanks for your comment.

We plan to offer an on-prem option eventually.

In the meantime: - we offer a GDPR compliant EU-based hosting option - we don't store anything (no audio, no transcript, no note): it's stateless and all erased at the end of each consultation - data is pseudonomyzed as it flows though our systems

Our first customers (large healthcare orgs) have been OK with this so far!

ar7hur··on Show HN: Using GPT-3 and Whisper to save doctors’ time
Yes absolutely.
ar7hur··on Show HN: Using GPT-3 and Whisper to save doctors’ time
Thanks for your comment. We clearly show a diff to the doctor before updating patient records. We are very explicit that they should check it (and edit if necessary).
ar7hur··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
"[...] garbage collect unnecessary processes [...]" At least we know some parts of the post were actually written by Zuck himself, not the PR team.
ar7hur··on Building a Startup on Clojure
We built Wit.ai on Clojure and it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Most engineers we hired has no prior experience but learned quickly. It gave us a great advantage to hire the best.

ar7hur··on A Graph-Based Firebase
I would really use this for many of my projects! For project A, I used Firebase which was great initially but eventually ran into the limitations well described in Stopa's essay. For project B, I decided to write everything from scratch but the amount of work it required is crazy, and of course the result in quite brittle.
ar7hur··on About Last Week’s Announcement
Can’t wait for the even more bizarre « about the last week second announcement » next week. Seriously who can remain a customer after this?
ar7hur··on Success and Failure at Pebble
We started Wit.ai from Pebble's offices in 2013 in Palo Alto. We didn't know anyone in the Valley, but Eric had read our "Show HN" and kindly offered us to hang out there. We grew to a 6-people team and stayed there for 6 months -- Eric never asked us to pay $1. He helped us a lot and he also pushed us to join YC (W14). We wouldn't have made Wit.ai without him and I'll be thankful forever.
ar7hur··on Persepolis of ancient Persia rendered in WebGL
I visited Persepolis in 2016 -- having this experience before the actual visit would have been incredible!
ar7hur··on Can a $310M startup avoid due diligence?
I think Nuance bought most of the assets. And 20 years later MSFT bought Nuance. Full circle!
ar7hur··on Window System X (1984)
"Anyone who wants the code can come by with a tape."
ar7hur··on The Web3 Fraud
This article misses the point, it sees web3 decentralization as purely technical and makes performance comparisons with existing systems. The power of web3 decentralization is about control, not more powerful computing. Yes your raspberry pi runs faster than the EVM, but can you give me any guarantee about what code it runs?
ar7hur··on Obfuscated Tiny C Compiler
Fabrice Bellard should receive a Turing award. Who agrees?
ar7hur··on The story of the PDF (2018)
Yes, Yann and another machine learning celebrity: Leon Bottou!
ar7hur··on A Little Money Laundering Can Have a Big Impact on Real Estate Prices (2019)
In some cases the line is probably thin between "wealthy Chinese trying to park their money outside of China" and "money laundering"
ar7hur··on A one-line change decreased our build times by 99%
Alternative title: "How one line of code made our build time 100x what it should have been"
ar7hur··on Ask HN: Should I use SwiftUI or UIKit for a new iOS app in 2020?
I'm also wondering if it's more strategic to have the top level (navigation etc.) in SwiftUI and lower levels in UIKit, or the reverse?
ar7hur··on The Mark Zuckerberg Is a Lot Less Impressive Than the Movie Version
I had at few meetings with Zuck at Facebook after Wit.ai was acquired in 2015. To me, the real version is at least as impressive as the movie version.

Then, of course, maybe was I biased by the movie and everything else I already heard about him? I'm sill wondering.

ar7hur··on Firefox 70
The one thing that prevents me from switching to Firefox is the spell checker. Like many non-native English people, I'm constantly switching between languages when typing. Chrome is smart with that, and detects the right language sentence per sentence. Is there a way to have FF do this? Did I miss something?
