aqfamnzc··on An Example of a Sad Google Account Recovery Failure and Its Effects
Seems like that would invite more bad PR than it's worth...
aqfamnzc··on Seven.zip
I've always wondered what the point of this is. Why not just skip the signature and tell users to be careful where they get the binary? If I can't trust that the binary made it to me untampered, why should I believe the pubkey is any more legitimate?

Are you saying that replacing the battery improved your phone's responsiveness? I knew there was a throttling thing with iPhones but hadn't heard of anything outside of that.

That's not been my experience. I run an always-on VPN on my laptop and phone and never have issues. What service did you try?

I agree with your point, but generally when people say "like LEGO" they mean "modular". Not that you can build literally any shape the way you can with actual LEGO.

aqfamnzc··on Black holes as the source of dark energy
I'm not a relativity expert, but couldn't you tell the difference between a point mass (or just significantly smaller volume) and a star in this black box scenario? At a great distance, they would appear the same gravitationally, but as you get closer, the star would appear less massive. Since more mass would be pulling on you at an angle, rather than directly toward the center.
aqfamnzc··on Firefox Android now supports Tampermonkey
I agree with most of your comment, but just a quick note that whether or not a service provides a privacy policy doesn't mean they necessarily do anything to protect users' privacy. (Mostly in the sense that if they did have one, that fact wouldn't mean much on its own.)

What are you using to get it into an STL? I've had OK results with DEMto3D plugin, but it has some weird artifacts that I can't seem to get rid of. Are there any better options you're aware of?

I would say it's still a vacuum in the more common meaning of the word: A reduction in pressure, not necessarily a complete vacuum.

aqfamnzc··on OsmAnd 4.3 for Android devices
I'm not an expert either, but my understanding is that it's actually the opposite. From what I've seen, geocoders can find an address great when there's an exact match whether it's a point or area/shape. But they struggle to extrapolate or interpolate to find a spot along a road. ("Range")
aqfamnzc··on How true is 'Speed Enforced by Aircraft' Sign? (2016)
If there are multiple red-green cycles per 38mph interval, the 80-goers would be right! ;) (eg. you launch from the first light, the next light ahead goes green, red, green before you get through)

aqfamnzc··on Why Google and Apple work to snuff out the mobile web
Many other benefits to the company: (not necessarily for the user)

* Persistent shortcut button on device's launcher

* Notifications to pull user back into app to consume content, spend money, view ads

* Data collection like you say

* Uniquely identify user w/ device identifiers

* No browser UI and quirks

* Persistent storage on user's device

aqfamnzc··on Why Google and Apple work to snuff out the mobile web
In some ways, I'm glad when twitter, reddit, etc. do things like aggressively pushing to the app or to login because it reminds me of the incentives involved and literally, actively discourages me from using their service.
aqfamnzc··on What does Overture Map mean for the future of OpenStreetMap?
I remember reading your blog post a year or so ago when I was really starting to dive into OSM contributions and community. I guess I don't have much to say other than thank you for caring about the future of OSM (as many do) and writing your post. I'm sorry to hear you've been attacked!! I'm hopeful too that much needed political and technical changes will come eventually, even if late. Thank you for your contributions to the community and data.
aqfamnzc··on Bike Frame Stiffness
Drag will exert a constant force regardless of mass. So heavier wheels may allow you to coast farther, but at constant speed they don't affect the drag component.

Can you create a new idea in a vacuum? We humans also seed our creative RNGs from the world around us and from sources like memories and real-time sensory input.
aqfamnzc··on Life in the slow lane: how the slow cooker changed the world
The main thing is the quick pressurized cooking. But for me, and I use mine regularly, it's the repeatability. Boiled eggs are super easy once dialed in, and rice cooking too. The slow cooker part has worked better for me after buying a slow-cooker style lid for it (rather than the locking pressure lid, or no lid.)

aqfamnzc··on OpenStreepMap 2012 vs. 2022
There are a lot of problems that still need to be solved with OSM to make it on par with GM's overall utility. (I say that as a very active local OSM contributor and data consumer) Reviews, geocoding, political issues within the OSMF, and incomplete address information to name a few. Some of them can be solved by having more active local mappers, but others I don't have an easy answer for. Hopefully these are growing pains, as I desperately want to see OSM succeed.
aqfamnzc··on OpenStreepMap 2012 vs. 2022
I've seen some gatekeeping in the OSM community as well. In this specific case, this is also (in my opinion) due to bad tooling. Basically the easiest way to keep an eye on an area is to use a tool that shows changesets whose bounding box includes a certain area. So you could make a single tiny edit in both NY and LA, the bbox would ping a huge swath of the US. This happens all the time, actually. It's annoying, but the way I see it that means we need a better way to see changesets that actually affect a specific area.
