aqfamnzc··on Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G4 review: Business laptop is better with AMD Zen4
Having used 16:9 or similar my whole life, I don't get what people hate so much about it. It seems like about the right aspect ratio, when split in half (one window on the left, one on the right). Yes, a single full-screen window has wasted space on the sides usually, but what's the big deal? Perhaps I don't know what I'm missing.
aqfamnzc··on Gmail, Yahoo announce new 2024 authentication requirements for bulk senders
I've started doing this about a year ago, but I haven't nailed down an easy way to blacklist addresses from my catch-all. Do you know of a painless way to do that?

aqfamnzc··on Excel will allow certain auto data conversions to be turned off
The value of the cell is what I typed in. How that is displayed is determined at render time or whatever, based on the data type.

This is already kind of the case. If you change the date rendering format, the "real" date text in the cell stays the same. The only issue is that Excel decides what an acceptable "real" value is and modifies my input to match that.

It blows my mind that the behavior in spreadsheet software is not what I would expect:

* NEVER modify the text I type into a cell.

* Parse, interpret, format the cell according to the "data type" that's detected or chosen by the user

* In the grid, display the data according to the interpretation above

* In the formula textbox, show me exactly what I typed in, unmodified.

aqfamnzc··on There's a new map style on OpenStreetMap.org
The reason they use such light, poor contrast colors is that the map is used as a background for things like business ads, the blue navigation line, etc. Yes in the process, it becomes useless as an actual map for looking at.

As always, depends on the threat model.

I believe GP was talking about downloading a rom which someone else dumped, but which I myself did not dump from my copy.

I agree with you. However, now that you bring it up, I wonder what the law says? My guess is it's technically still not legal, at least in the US. :(

Who are you to say that your interpretation of that character is any more valid than anyone else's? One might see a "turned v"[0] or any other manner of meanings.[1] However most English-speaking people are going to immediately realize that it's meant as a stylized "A".

aqfamnzc··on Home Taping Is Killing Music: When the music industry waged war on the cassette
I generally agree, but I don't think your comparison between distortion and compression makes sense. Distortion (guitar pedals, etc.) is something the artist intentionally adds to the song, in a specific way, intensity, and time. Compression is something added after the fact, for transit and storage. The artist doesn't really have control over what sort of artifacts lossy compression is going to add, so I don't see how "not enough [compression] will reduce the impact the song has on the listener."

Honestly, for a non-techie I think the "I was logged out" is totally reasonable. I'd bet that a majority of Internet users aren't going to recognize that the UI has changed, especially when they're focused on getting some other task done.

I agree - I've long suspected that I've been used as a "probe" to check if a road is still accessible, or what speed is typical, etc. by being sent on strange sub-optimal routes.

aqfamnzc··on Reddit appears to be restoring edited/deleted comments
Don't remember where I heard this, but I've always held the idea that anything you type into a text box, whether you remove it before hitting "cancel", delete it after submitting, or edit it, should be considered non-revocable and "out there". IIRC Facebook got caught recording what users typed up, changed their mind, and never thought they were submitting?

Thanks for the link - I wouldn't have seen that thread had you not brought it up. However, are you implying the original story is being manually supressed? Could it be the discussion there got too heated? There are other factors that determine ranking, see https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html

Out of curiosity, are you referring to rooted Android, or some variant that provides the user some protection from apps "knowing"? GrapheneOS seems to provide some of this (Storage Scopes, network permission, etc.) but not all.
