april_22··on A simpler way to search for everything startup related
Agree that this is currently mainly just useful for news (and filtering out low-quality news sites) but it isn't quite there yet when it comes to researching start-up creation.
april_22··on Starlink Aviation
Haha sorry my bad
april_22··on Focus is saying no to good ideas
Exactly. I also think it's thinking about how much extra worth those time spend really benefits your life, compared to how much it creates noise in your brain.
april_22··on Starlink Aviation
I wonder if this also means future astronauts will have wifi when launching to moon/mars. Imagine watching watching a movie while taking off to somewhere distant
april_22··on Are You Ready for the Internet? (1994) [video]
And I am even more excited by thinking about what the internet will look like in 2031
april_22··on New Webb image captures clearest view of Neptune’s rings in decades
Even the Rosetta/Philae images of the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko are out of this world!

april_22··on If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel (2014)
I can imagine that is type of things are the best possible way to visualize the scales that we are living in.

Would love to see something similar for bigger dimensions, e.g. distance to the nearest star, galaxy or exoplanet.

april_22··on EU Open Web Search project kicked off
Same here, not using YouTube's built in search function eliminates most of the ad and also recommendations problems. I use You.com since they additionally show Reddit and TikTok results which I sometimes find more useful than YT videos.
april_22··on Rockstar Games confirms they were hacked by an outside party
Tens of millions of people have been waiting for years for GTA VI to release and i am pretty sure that despite this leak people will be extremly for it to launch.
april_22··on Royal Caribbean to use SpaceX's Starlink to provide internet onboard their fleet
Many mountain regions with beautiful hiking paths will remain disconnected from internet access for quite some time. So if you are fit enough, I strongly suggest to hike. You and everyone you are hiking with, will have no option to check mails or slack. It is also a great way to connect and spend time with family and friends.

april_22··on Royal Caribbean to use SpaceX's Starlink to provide internet onboard their fleet
And also exactly in those places internet is most needed

april_22··on Film: Frame Interpolation for Large Motion
Also can't wait to see where all of this will be in a couple of years!
april_22··on 4.2 Gigabytes, Or: How to Draw Anything
Yes and I think it will especially push the boundaries of art forward like we have never seen before.

Also, it will be interesting to watch whether and how people will be assessing art created by AI. Will there be something like Connoisseurship for AI art?

april_22··on Too many Americans live in places built for cars – not for human connection
I love this concept made by dance a rental e-bike startup from berlin. They offer their bikes in all major cities in europe now.

april_22··on Too many Americans live in places built for cars – not for human connection
I would say bikeability is the best. If you live in any quiter regions of most mid- to large sized cities in western europe and scandinavia you will have access to a huge variety of possibilites, restaurants, bars etc. and can access everything relaviely quick, while living in a quiet area. Biking is also fun imo.
april_22··on The coming tsunami of fakery
I have been getting great results with you.com and am downranking all the sites I don't find value in. Searching for shopping related queries has been a blast in comparison to Google.

april_22··on Effective altruism as a tower of assumptions
Another thing, that some people are underestimating is that people can have way, way more impact by switching careers than just donating money. Knowledge, expertise and dedication is worth millions when it comes to finding solutions to pressing problems.

I like https://80000hours.org/ They go over this topic way more in depth and also have a job board of most impactful jobs.

april_22··on Effective altruism as a tower of assumptions
“We can not solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them”

― Albert Einstein

april_22··on Effective altruism as a tower of assumptions
I also think that people shouldn't overthink this. You shouldn't be spending hours trying to calculate which charity could have most impact in 25 years. Donating is good. Not eating meat is good. Doing both is even better. Just try to help as much as you are willing to help.
april_22··on Orcas are breaking rudders off boats in Europe
Contrary to sharks, Orca's actually don't have the ability to smell https://www.treehugger.com/surprising-facts-about-orcas-4864...
april_22··on Design the next iPhone
The European Union will force Apple to ship iPhones with USB-C from 2024.

https://you.com/search?q=eu+usb+c+law

My guess is that they will remove all ports by then and completely switch to MagSafe

april_22··on Adventure game graphics with DALL-E 2
I might be wrong, but I could imagine that AI will push the absoulute maximum out of human creativity. To beat AI, you'll truly need to make something outstanding and I think there will be people achieving that and truly pushing the boundaries of creativity and art forward, in ways we haven't seen before. And those people will be rewarded. Everyone will have to step up their game.
april_22··on Ask HN: Did the Tesla return to work happen?
I know some German engineers who quit Tesla and went back to the traditional German car manufacturers. Working for Tesla was hell and you aren't even paid that well.
april_22··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
yes and the consequences of 'not hitting a button' on a car can be really bad
april_22··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
I even think the only way to drive new Teslas in reverse is by swiping a button on the touchscreen. That's such a huge security risk.
april_22··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
The printer market is probably one of the worst when it comes to this. Everything just keeps breaking down and not working and I don't know a single company that makes printers that actually last.
april_22··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
It would be amazing to have a ranking of companies whose products actually work and don't break down after some years. Might be controversial, but I'd place Apple pretty high up there since (excluding the battery thing they did), they built really sturdy hardware that lasts and offer long software support.
april_22··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
Another issue I've experienced with these smart TVs is, that the software becomes extremly slow and almost unusable after a couple of years.
april_22··on The value of owning more books than you can read (2018)
And this seems true for many people. No one I know has sticked with their e-reader and Google searches for 'Kindle' have also only been decreasing the past years.
