Easy to know U.S. lost expertise, but tough question how do you get it back? Tariffs? A larger military-industrial complex? Even larger government?

Don't forget about the pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer that is sprayed over crops that gets washed into the water. The Mississippi river and the Gulf of Mexico dead zone is an example. Where i live, cow pasture land mostly is untouched.

Also, cows have feet and digestive systems so it takes more equipment and diesel for harvesting and processing grains.

I don't know if you need a third place. Home will do fine, just invite people to hang out to watch sports games, movies, BBQ, whatever. I lived separately, but I had a few friends living together and it was an open door policy like Seinfeld and Friends... just walk in.

Another point is a lot of my friends, who have trouble meeting other friends, don't have hobbies. During the summer, I say "I'm going hiking every weekend this summer, whoever wants to come can join". If no one else goes, that's fine my dog still has an awesome time. Sure enough, friends show up, sometimes with their coworkers or their hair barber. These friends are closer than the beer, coffee crowd because we already have the hobby in common.

EDIT: the main commonality between the open door policy and hiking example is consistency. Any time not busy, people will just default gravitate to the house or hiking meetup.

It's a letter of credit. Not a line of credit. Not an escrow account. Not a prepayment. It's not obscure like the author of the article thinks. Letters of credit are a very common arrangement.

Effectively, it's a guarantee provided by a bank saying, "if Twitter doesn't pay, we will". Now it's up to the bank to get repaid by Twitter.

I think your advice of not learning the operations is really bad advice, especially for a small business. If it's a low margin business, hiring people when you should be doing the work yourself isn't going to help. Small business owner definitely need to get their hands dirty. While I'm not totally convinced, Elon Musk thinks owners should get their hands dirty even when in a large corporation.

I'd use Ruby more if it would work better in a notebook environment. It appears that iruby is in maintenance mode and falling behind Julia in usability.

Most of the others replying here are generally saying fraud is missed because it's complicated; however, in my opinion, it's because the auditors don't know anything else other than "do the numbers add up". Once the numbers do add up, they stop there.

The vast majority of auditors are only 3 year or less years out of school. They don't even know how a corporation is run at that point, so how are they supposed to catch anything suspicious.

Probably similar to you, I couldn't read the FT article because it's behind a paywall; however, I'm familiar with the general story. It's not some corporate training. They, plus many other accounting firms, cheated on professional licensing exams. Egregious because the accounting firms are doing the opposite of their sole purpose - add trust to the financial system.
