apotheosis-neko··on Launch HN: Raycast (YC W20) – CLI-inspired desktop app for non-coding tasks
Heads-up! Is the site down, seems to be loading forever for me. Want to check it out more, since it seems like I am the target market.
apotheosis-neko··on How Debuggers Work - Part 1/2
Interesting from a technical perspective. Thanks for sharing!
apotheosis-neko··on Number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rises in Japan
From my count there has been nearly a dozen large companies in Tokyo alone 'going remote' the past few weeks. Nearly 500k workers suddenly have the option to work from a satellite office or home.. Alcohol hand sanitizer at the entrance of nearly all events and people requested to wear masks. Think they are being fairly cautious. Definitely not a mask scale panic though! :)
apotheosis-neko··on Homeless Developer in Los Angeles Needs Work, Can You Please Help?
Where your self-pity needs to be stopped. "No body needs to be homeless in the wealthiest country?" Dude. People are poor all over the country in most places. If you just drive you will see shantys in 50% of all cities. Don't go to that part of town! Your dev skills should put you on the fast track to being on the top again. Hang out there until you feel like you will always have a home, then build your company.
apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: Getting beta users from competing platforms?
Like poaching them? Read somewhere that 70% of people remain loyal to the original product even if it does not make rational sense to do so. I.E. They remain loyal even if they are offered a better product at a cheaper price elsewhere. This is why open source Twitter never became the main Twitter, etc. People stay loyal to the brand! Organic search is the best! People have an issue and they happen to find your product as the solution. Producthunt is good for first beta users!
apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: Scariest startup hype you believed but learned not to be true?
The crypto currency crash of 2018 was a big one. While I bought in early I was deep into the Green. Swapped over to an alt-coin that was promising to make a Visa backed Crypto debit card for the whole world.

Took them too long, so I sold a lot then the crash happened and I sold more, never to return :)

Checked back on the project today and it seems it has not moved much since I last looked at it. No cards in other than one country! Seems like something easy to do: 'print plastic cards' that have a crypto backend, but apparently it is not.

apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: Partnership Compensation for Side Project?
This depends on the side project and the type of work you want to get done. All tech? Or tech work with all of the other work that goes with a startup?

If you want full support 50/50. If you plan on doing most things yourself then balance it, 80/20 or 70/30.

If it pays for itself, it would probably be best to keep 100% until the project is more formalized (a company exists). Equity is quite precious and is hard to get back if your teammate does not work out.

apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: What REST APIs, in your opinion, deserve an award?
I have worked with so maaaany APIs. Could definitely say my least favorite without thinking too hard. Favorite is a bit harder.

1. Github. WHY: They keep is consistent across versions and it is easy to work with.

2. Hubspot. WHY: Each object is it's own endpoint, very clear and concise. Short on mixed objects that should obviously be easily connected.

3. Mailchimp. WHY: The actual work that gets done with the API is complex while the API itself is not.

Good APIs should be clear, work as stated in the docs, there should never be a case where "logically it should work this way" but it does not.

apotheosis-neko··on Working for a startup makes less sense
This is soooo true!
apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: How do big software companies maintain high engineering standards
In many cases, having soft deadlines works. You can double check and do code reviews for ever, it is never perfect and we can always think of a better way. Regardless of the experience of the engineer less time to complete a task means prioritizing making code just work, over making code optimal.
apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: Figuring out why website platforms died in the past?
You could use LinkedIn and ping the people who created or managed them in the past.
apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: Startup grew from 2 to 3 people. What should CEO be paying attention to?
Makes sense! Keep up the good work!! I think as the other poster said, business results are #1 internal processes #2.
apotheosis-neko··on Ask HN: Startup grew from 2 to 3 people. What should CEO be paying attention to?
With three people, not much should change. You can formalize more things, but at this stage keeping your team engaged is probably more important than adding a bunch of processes.

- Check ins. - Clear goals, and task ownership. - Why do you need an office space?
