ap99··on Failing grades soar with AI usage, dwindling math skills in Berkeley CS classes
Build one myself and make a ton of money. Or wait for the next guy/company to do it.
ap99··on Failing grades soar with AI usage, dwindling math skills in Berkeley CS classes
This goes with calculator to do basic math, contacts apps to store phone numbers instead of remembering them, and watches to tell time imo.

Sure we could use our brain power with old techniques to do these, but why? I don't want to do any of these. I'd rather use that brain power for other problems.

Same with maps.

I don't want to have to store a bunch of location or routing data in my head.

I think what you're pointing towards is going from having problems to solve to not having any problems to solve.

That's definitely a danger, but right now is still early in the AI era so obviously it'll feel like we went from solving problems to letting the new tool solve them for us.

There are still many problems to solve.

Who even makes the decision to drop having a standard bar to verify students?

And what possible benefit would that have?

I'd challenge you to point out specifics that are industry wide, not just one company that happens to abuse its employees.

Came here to say exactly this.

If people don't like building tech that's one thing.

But the problems most of this thread are discussing are just people and organizational problems.

If you want to live and make money you're probably going to have to put up with some level of bullshit.

Find the company with the least of it and enjoy the rest.

ap99··on When everyone has AI and the company still learns nothing
These "secrets" that are being hidden are basically on the same level as gary tan's list of super uber powerful prompts.

None of it is actually that crazy that everyone else could think up.

What I've noticed in my own experience here is that even when I do share my own prompts/skills few people use them (or alternatively they were so basic that everyone already had their own version).

e.g. If someone doesn't care about xyz before AI, they probably won't after AI even if I serve them it on a silver platter.

Ok yes, pushing positivity into the universe is better than pushing nothing or negativity.

But there are people who will flatter purely for gain. I think being aware of which is which is very useful.

Also who is giving the compliment will factor into how I receive it.

ap99··on When everyone has AI and the company still learns nothing
Well, that's fine until your teammate does all of those things by default and gaps show up between them and the rest of the team.

But aren't they pricing based on how much it costs to show the film?

Which in turn is how much the studios and distributors pay to make/market the film?

Which is in turn driven by costs...

Which are basically large bets on if a piece of art will have mass appeal.

This mindset is fine (it's mine essentially too).

But it absolutely has to be combined with verification/testing at the same speed as code production.

100% agree.

I want to buy from a company whose goal is to make the best products, not make the most money.

His comment is more of a general commentary that east African countries are notorious for doping.

Like, if we find out the top two finishers here doped very few would be surprised.

That said - it's still an amazing accomplishment.

ap99··on ChatGPT Images 2.0
It absolutely is a fair comparison.

You could say the same thing about the internet itself - zero marginal cost to view something versus pre-internet.

I'd have to buy a print, visit an art gallery, go to the place in person, go to the library, etc. That's all friction and cost to "ingest" art. Some of it costs something and some just the cost of going.

ap99··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data

ap99··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
I'm amazed that people see America as different from any other country in terms of who should be allowed in and what constitutes bad behavior.

Being in America is a privilege that can easily be taken away. Guests of America should walk a narrow path.

Same as being in any other country.

ap99··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
How is this insane?

The US isn't some global free zone where everyone has a right to come and go - do as they please.

If you came to the US legally with a visa. Great. When you signed your visa documents there were some questions they asked you and some fine print that basically made you liable for "bad behavior."

I'm an American living in the UK and I'm under no illusion that if I start doing dumb stuff here it's possible they tell me to leave. (Tho apparently the UK government has a pretty lax attitude with who they ask to leave.)

If someone wants to come to my country and behave in any way outside their best - then yes I support the government kicking them out.

ap99··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
If this person was on a visa, this is enough of an excuse to start looking at the fine print to see how I can get this person's visa revoked.
ap99··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
Yes, a visa can be revoked just that easily.

It's a guest pass.

When getting a visa you're basically asked to agree to America's terms of service. Violations can be found pretty easily in the fine print if someone is really looking.

From there it's the same administrative work to revoke and deport as it is to say ban someone from Twitch for saying the wrong thing.

Women can help the front line fighters but if I was running a country I would not want to put a large number of women on the front, especially young women.

Sure they can fight and kill.

But a country that loses its ability to make more people won't last longer than a generation.

Two things a country needs from which all other needs derive: people and a border that can be defended.

Men historically get sacrificed to protect the border. And women "sacrificed" to make more people.

Food, entertainment, religion, government, taxes, education, etc... it's all to serve those two fundamental requirements.

Who would realistically not want to cash out?

1. Someone so purely interested in the tech and not money they'd give up the wealth 2. Governments, specifically the ones that don't consider a few billion to be a lot 3. Someone who's dead

ap99··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
I have no idea about any of this stuff - but if I were trying to hide my identity I would go out of my way to misalign my real self with my hidden identity.

e.g. Pick a name that puts people on a false trail.
