Building AI verse - One company at a time

anuraj··on G is for Google
The diversification seems to be going in the way of the conglomerate - and conglomerate tax shall apply - whether it is Google or not! Hope it does not turn dystopian though.
anuraj··on College Dropouts Thrive in Tech
It is just confirmation bias.
anuraj··on YouTube is not a real business (2006)
Video technology is one of the few deep technology plays in mass market web - sheer number of protocols and standards, securing digital video, streaming video using non QOS means catering to each and every device and bandwidth, content personalisation, ad targeting all are problems of a magnitude bigger than the mundane ones you encounter on transactional/social web. Youtube has become the golden standard of video streaming - and without Google technology and money - this would not have been possible.
anuraj··on Yahoo in Talks to Buy Foursquare
Yahoo is indeed the place where startups go to die!
anuraj··on Indian Supreme Court Judgement on Freedom of Speech [pdf]
Finally sane voice of the court has reinstated limited democracy and freedom of speech in India.
anuraj··on Gigaom: The Life and Death of a Venture-Funded Media Startup
Who reads these so called technical blogs - I neither find technology nor entertainment in them.
anuraj··on India goes digital
You meant India Government goes digital - there is a day and night difference. And if you think your data is safe with any government - you should be day dreaming!
anuraj··on Plyr – A simple HTML5 media player
Will this support streaming - HLS and MPEG-DASH??

anuraj··on The truth about C and Unix history
Truth is - UNIX/C and clones run the world :)
anuraj··on India Orders 32 Websites Blocked, Including GitHub, Archive.Org, Pastebin
What country reasons its existence on paranoia and fear factor. True India shall happen when federal states get functional and financial autonomy and decisions are not shoved down their throats through an imperial mechanism.
anuraj··on India Orders 32 Websites Blocked, Including GitHub, Archive.Org, Pastebin
India is number of ethnic nations lumped together. But there is hardly any autonomy left.
anuraj··on India Orders 32 Websites Blocked, Including GitHub, Archive.Org, Pastebin
Indian bureaucracy at its whimsical best and ridiculous as always - do not expect anything sane from them. Internet freedom in India is nonexistent.

They don't even remotely know what is the effect on business if services like github are blocked!!

anuraj··on India’s Downward Spiral
India is a nanny state trying to save its gullible illiterate masses from cyber influences deemed bad in culture. It is not the cyber surveillance capabilities that is the problem (which is coarse anyway), but the condescending attitude of bureaucracy who can send people to jail without bail for a Facebook like or a retweet.
anuraj··on The U.S. Navy Tests Its Ships in This Indoor Ocean
Isn't this quite common in Naval Architecture? I thought this is the way all ship models are tested.
anuraj··on The Most Shocking Result in World Cup History
Brazil looked like a pack of nincompoops scurrying around without sense. Well deserved win for Germany!
anuraj··on Python is now the most popular introductory language at top U.S. universities
Having a structured, type safe language as base works well for Computer Science. Scripting language may be tried for other courses though.
anuraj··on CSS is unnecessary given a layout language
Browsers use DOM whether you like it or not. The rendering engines are built on eventing model. CSS is what they understand now. We can think of changing that, but given the history of browsers and HTML standard, I am not very optimistic that such changes can be pushed through easily in a reasonable amount of time.
anuraj··on An analysis of Lionel Messi
Maradona and Messi are two different kind of players from two different eras. Maradona is a mid fielder who can control the game from the centre, whereas Messi is forward who excels in striking and last minute opportunity creation. Perhaps greatness of Maradona may be compared to Zidane. It will not be fair to judge a midfielder on the number of goals scored - midfielder is a strategist - which Maradona was.
anuraj··on All Our Patent Are Belong To You
Good move! At this point Tesla knows that market needs to be created and it is impossible to achieve unless auto industry works in tandem. Once the market expands, the pie is bigger for everybody.
anuraj··on Mozilla to sell '$25' Firefox OS smartphones in India
Respect for the endeavour. But India presents many challenges. The masses this phone targets may not be able to use it effectively unless the UI is extremely simple. Remember that India has most illiterates on the planet and the most people who earn less than $2 a day. Smart phone penetration is a measly 10% now though growing at a healthy 50% per year. This is despite smart phones being made available at less than $75 price point already. Would be glued on the ground.
anuraj··on India's pro-business Modi storms to historic election win
Remains to be seen whether this will usher in economic revival or the country drifts to religious strife - Modi has potential for both.
anuraj··on Distributed Systems and the End of the API
This is a network programmers view. System, Network programmers concern themselves about systems and topologies. For an application programmer, both needs to be abstracted and only the business logic is important. Money is in the top of the pyramid now - hence the proliferation of APIs.
anuraj··on The logic of Buddhist philosophy
Sankara (8th century CE) talks about two types of truth - 1) Kevala Satya (Absolute Truth) and 2) Vyavaharika Satya (Relative Truth) - He also says that people who are not one with the Absolute truth (One with God - liberated) can only discern the Relative Truth. He called this state - Maya (illusion). Looks like he was talking similar to Gorampa. To be noted is Sankara was extremely knowledgeable about Budhist thought - and is often called Abhinava Budha (Neo Budha) and was instrumental in propagating Neo Hinduism based on Adwaita (Non Duality) defeating the Budhist schools of the day using their own arguments.
anuraj··on The Story Behind the Worst Movie on IMDb
Bollywood movies are kitsch. Generally they don't deserve any rating.
anuraj··on Why it’s so easy to believe our food is toxic
The article scuttles the basic issues like

1. How credible is the bio safety of GM products. Why is the consumer not having the choice to know if a product uses GM ingredients?

2. What is the level of pesticide residues in food we eat? What are the harmful effects? For example, many organo chlorides are known to be persistent pollutants and can cause severe damage to nervous and endocrine systems and can even affect fetuses.

3. Why there is no transparency of information regarding toxicity of chemicals found in food?

anuraj··on Gabriel García Márquez, Literary Pioneer, Dies at 87
I read Marquez's master piece '100 Years of Solitude' in my native language Malayalam 25 years ago and it got etched into my mind forever. In the next 2-3 years I read almost all the works of Marquez available in English. Later a lot more Latin American Authors including Borges, Huan Rulfo, Carpentier, Manuel Puig, Fuentes,Cortazar, Paz etc. became popular among the reading public in my region, but GGM was the one who started it all and remains one of my favourite writers of 20th century. Have a feeling that Marquez' did his best in the short story genre - despite his reputation as a novelist.

It is a coincidence that one of the first magical realist novels of my mother tongue - 'Khazakinte Ithihasam (Legends of Khazak)' also got published almost at the same time as '100 years of Solitude' was being published in Spanish and both works present highly resplendent and almost spiritual language and journeys (almost untranslatable).

Opening line of 'Legends of Khazak'- 'When the bus finally reached Kooman Kavu, the place did not seem unfamiliar to Ravi'.

anuraj··on Why don’t designers take Android seriously?
We apply unidesign (works equally well on iOS and Android) for all our apps these days. But we take iOS as the base for design. This is because Android still do not have the design consistency of iOS. Also Android devices come in variety of shapes and sizes and resolutions making it difficult to visualize end result.
anuraj··on Guide to MongoDB for startups
Startups should use a relational database unless their requirements (current and future) exactly fit a nosql model - which is difficult to predict. You can migrate later if scalability becomes an issue. Going nosql first (considering that most startups lack enough design experience) will make things messy and would make it difficult to scale when needed.
anuraj··on What India Is Doing To Stop Cheating At Board Exams
CBSE is puny when compared to state boards where majority of Indians study. CBSE is one of the trend setters in rote learning too!
