anuila··on Facebook was used as a proxy by web scraping bots
Indeed, I must have confused it with Bangladesh, I visited both in the same month. Thanks for linking to the actual list.
anuila··on Gron – Make JSON Greppable
Is it possible that you learned awk and Perl when you were but a child, and now your aging system is becoming read-only?

- a fellow read-only system

anuila··on Facebook was used as a proxy by web scraping bots
There are a lot of countries where Facebook is “free”, for example India and Philippines.
anuila··on Doubleclicking on the Web (2015)
This is something I usually take care of by throttling the relevant event listeners (in an AJAXed site) but the way this article puts it makes me wonder if this is as easy as globally disabling double clicks on links and buttons:

    document.addEventListener('dblclick', event => {
      if (event.target.closest('a, input, button'))
        event.preventDefault()
    })
anuila··on Amazon Academy India
They do offer everything from a to z.
anuila··on Ask HN: Hey Drew, why is Dropbox becoming so bad?
I don't see the problem with building new products, Google was just search in the beginning. The problem arises when you screw your original product by tacking everything else onto it.

What if Google turned into Yahoo.com?

Google’s core product is still essentially unchanged since its inception, for the most part, except for ads.

anuila··on Ask HN: Hey Drew, why is Dropbox becoming so bad?
It's ironic how the platform that became so popular because of its speed and simplicity has turned into this. I like it better when software is invisible.

While iCloud isn't as neat as 2012 Dropbox, it's better than good enough. I haven't reinstalled Dropbox.

anuila··on Chameleons Not Seen by Scientists for Century Found in a Madagascar Hotel Garden
Chameleons in photos always look like they're thinking "I think they see us."
anuila··on Write code that is easy to delete, not easy to extend (2016)
I’d have another suggestion: Don’t break the back button on your CSS-free blog.

This is arguably easy to avoid, yet people manage to do it.

anuila··on Starlink Beta Has Outperformed Most Internet in the US
IANAS but from what I understand, the speed is constant, but it appears to travel more slowly due to the atoms found along the way, which absorb and reemit the photon.

In the case of the fibers, the light just bounces on the walls of the tube, effectively lengthening the distance it has to travel.

It's like saying that I did not drive a 50 mph simply because I took a longer detour: I still drove 50 mph, but I did not go in a straight line.

anuila··on Internet sleuths take down the SSC Tuatara's 316-MPH speed record
This is it. There’s no difference between someone who goes faster and someone who claims to go faster if there’s no one to validate the result.

Bugatti’s “oh yeah we went superfast but we won’t bother to validate the record” is not very different from “my dad did 100mph once.”

anuila··on Chrome unlikely to support XPath 3.1
I think that’s misleading since Safari’s development is not generally discussed outside the occasional WebKit blog post and the rare Safari developer on Twitter who may or may not rightfully ignore any questions/arguments.

A lot of features are implemented late and incorrectly. I think that the first Safari version that supported PWAs was so broken that many had to manually exclude the browser in their support detection code.

anuila··on New youtube-dl release: v2020.11.01.1
Open source is bad enough. When open source meets the general public you can enjoy a nice disaster cake.
anuila··on Intent to stop using 'null' in my JS code
The point is, why use it at all if both values are equivalent to "missing"? I don't see a practical difference between undefined and null in the vast majority of cases, which is the the author is arguing.

Again: In the vast majority of cases. I'm sure you'll find your exceptions.

anuila··on Intent to stop using 'null' in my JS code
No, most likely I'll just use undefined because my abstractions are not a complicated mess that need 2 null types.

Found? string

Not found? undefined

anuila··on Intent to stop using 'null' in my JS code
Undefined is “stored” the same way in JSON, which means it isn’t. This only becomes a “problem” when you convert a JSON string to an object and the data contains an array with a null value in it. That’s the only case where null exists in JSON, and I think it’s generally pretty rare.
anuila··on Intent to stop using 'null' in my JS code
If the value is expected to be a Boolean, use undefined to set it as undefined.

For everything else, use false to “explicitly assign it”, you don’t need a third type.

anuila··on Octotree – Proprietary Firefox extension contains AGPL-licensed code
The code allegedly includes third-party code as well as contributions that were initially accepted into AGPL code, which from what I understand are technically owned by the contributor and licensed to use under AGPL.

What the guy here did is to disregard all of this and relicense it autonomously.

anuila··on Jailbreaking Used Teslas
Whatever it is, it’s been paid for, so you don’t just pull it from under my feet.

The price was decided upon purchase and unless it specifies limits it’s “lifetime”

anuila··on Humans Are Bad at URLs and Fonts Don’t Matter
A solution could be displaying the credibility of the page. For example: age of URL, how many users have been using it, how reputable is the domain, and so on. Even if a bank changes their login URL, the old domain will point to it.

The issue with this is that it requires a crawler that determines this. In a way, the existing safe browsing mechanisms already offer the infrastructure.

anuila··on Humans Are Bad at URLs and Fonts Don’t Matter
I don’t understand why you don’t want to blame the victim. My own father entered his bank password into a random site he received via SMS. The url wasn’t even similar.

The only solution to this is to tell users to look at the URL bar and make that work well. If they don’t, you can’t do much.

anuila··on Humans Are Bad at URLs and Fonts Don’t Matter
Can anyone tell me why 1Password is specifically suggested over, say, literally any other password manager?

Why is 1Password better than your browser’s own, free, preconfigured manager?

anuila··on MDN Web Docs evolves: Lowdown on the upcoming new platform
If that’s the case, why not just use GitHub Actions? It’s more integrated and requires no setup.
anuila··on MDN Web Docs evolves: Lowdown on the upcoming new platform
What are you talking about? MDN is not being retired nor sunset. They’re only changing the underlying technology. It’s completely fair game.
anuila··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
The only way they should reimagine their workforce is to fire them all. The website has become embarrassing, with videos loading ridiculously slow or without audio. They’re basically helping me off of the addiction to Reddit, which actually isn’t such a bad thing.
anuila··on Next.js 10
Yeah, I mean, screw IE11 users. An unsupported srcset just means that they will not benefit from this enhancement but they will just download a standard size. This is perfectly fine.

As for the syntax, yes, it’s better to always have some generator to create it. WordPress has been doing it for years with a plain `the_image($id)` call.

anuila··on Vdx – An intuitive CLI for processing video, powered by FFmpeg
Given that it’s a wrapper to make ffmpeg more user friendly, I don’t see the problem.

npm has a lot of tools that make creating CLI tools a breeze. For example there’s Listr and the more generic Ink (“React for CLI”)

anuila··on iSH Shell
How did you get YouTube-dl? That was the second thing I tried but I get SSL issues with both wget and curl.

I also tried installing some npm packages but ran into permission issues.

anuila··on iSH Shell
An iOS app under 4MB, what is this witchcraft?
anuila··on Firefox 82
> Cases where Google doesn't follow standards.

Like what? If there’s a standard, Chrome follows it. If there’s no standard, they propose one. They used to have a lot of custom features with prefixes, but that rarely happens anymore.
