antx··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Setting the temperature to 0 mathematically tells the system to always choose the absolute highest-probability word (known as "greedy decoding"), but in no reality is this "deterministic". Output drift is still a thing.
antx··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Out of curiosity, which models are fully deterministic? I was under the impression that all LLMs were fundamentally probabilistic.
antx··on Raiders of the Lost Array: vibe-coding a macOS driver for my orphaned Drobo
You're not alone.

My guess is that both interfaces where claimed (by a driver) already, so it's impossible to bypass (hence "back doors"), as the goal was to send commands directly to the hardware.

But it's hard to derive that conclusion from context alone, the style is so fucking annoying to read.

Except that you're wrong. The referenced sentence is in a quote block, written by Opus.

And they have spywares in their IDE and if they even think for a second that you're using the trial software in an unauthorized way, their lawyers will threaten you.

Like, they won't even try to discuss with their sales team, or try to clarify the situation. Despicable company if you ask me.

antx··on Sony erases digital content from libraries; reminded we don't own what we buy
Two wrongs don't make a right. Whatever StudioCanal is doing, does not ethically or logically absolve Sony of doing the same to its own customers.
antx··on Sony erases digital content from libraries
You're moving the goalpost. I get that many people view Vincent Bolloré as a bad guy.

But him being a "far-right actor" or whatever that means doesn't excuse Sony's anti-consumer actions in the slightest, that's completely missing the point, and turning things political for no reason. And also a logical falacy.

antx··on Sony erases digital content from libraries
Son your defrgument is... what? It's okay for them to rugpull as long as they are removing movies from a company which you don't support for... political reasons? Whew!

antx··on 1976 Soviet edition of 'The Hobbit' (2015)
that's a wild theory, considering that Tolkien himself described Gollum to be "a small, slimy creature" after the revisions, probably because of Jansson's depiction of him. and although the parallel is clear between many characters of the Hobbit and the Bible, do you have any credible sources that Tolkien took inspiration from apocryphal texts (or in this case the Hadith) ?
antx··on GPT-OSS-120B runs on just 8GB VRAM & 64GB+ system RAM
Also with the rapid advances of vision language models, I would be surprised if we don't see image-to-text-to-voice system that works with real-time video in a not-so-far future! Like a reverse "Genie" where instead of providing a prompt and it generates a world, you provide a streaming video and it spouts relevant information when changes happen, or on demand, for instance...

antx··on German state ditches Microsoft for Linux and LibreOffice
It's wasn't just "an MS employee". It was an experienced postgres developer. Someone who understands the benefits of open-source.

We simply don't know how many backdoors there are in closed-source software... do you prefer to live with your head in the sand?

antx··on Dungeons and Directories, an exploration game in your file explorer
Hey, it's not stupid if it works! In the context of this particular game, I can't see why it would be a bad idea. Even if you need to conserve some kind of state... gzip the whole thing and copy it elsewhere, it's going to take seconds!

antx··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown escalates, aggravating users
Funny you mention this. With cable, I used to be able to skip ads with my PVR (MythTV). And that's entirely my right to do so, nobody can strip it from me. My TV, my rules.

Same thing with the web. My computer, my rules.

But google of course is unhappy about it, and will try to frustrate as many users as it can until they can push their "web integrity" crap down users' throats.

antx··on Tech doesn’t make our lives easier. It makes them faster
But... your point doesn't contradict the author's ?

So, electronic payments are of course more convenient... but they do indeed force us to go faster. They speed up transactions, reduce queues, and eliminate the need for cash.

I'm happy I can buy stuff online, but that in turns also makes me consume more.

You're speaking of some of cash issues... but have you thought about impacts on the the homeless of a 100% cashless society?
