anttisalmela··on The Olkiluoto 3 EPR plant unit started up
Definitely. Extra production will tip the scale of imports and exports so that the price in Finland will match most of the time whatever the price is in northern Sweden with its abundance of hydropower. OL3 will also probably lower prices in Estonia and Southern Sweden.
anttisalmela··on Plan Ahead for Phase Out of 3G Cellular Networks and Service
That's what happening in Finland too. All operators have announced that 3G will be switched off in 2023.
anttisalmela··on Paintmakers are running out of the color blue
National Emergency Supply Agency in Finland did have real granaries not a long ago - they still have emergency supplies of grain, nowadays it is just done by owning grain and paying private companies to store it in their normal logistical network.

In the beginning of the pandemic the agency was heavily in local news when they started deliveries of protective gear from their stockpiles - but to be honest, some rubber bands of the stored masks did need replacing.

anttisalmela··on UK to put nuclear power at heart of net zero emissions strategy
OL3 is not yet producing power, apparently turbines didn't like spending a decade waiting for use and need some maintenance. Current estimation is that reactor will be started in January 2022 and regular electricity production will start in March.
anttisalmela··on Feeding cows seaweed cuts 99% of greenhouse gas emissions from their burps
(2018) - would be nice to know what has happened since.
anttisalmela··on Cmake.org SSL server certificate have expired
https://crt.sh/?Identity=cmake.org - a valid certificate has been issued in May, but maybe something wasn't restarted.
anttisalmela··on Complexities of e-mail validation logic
Non-ascii alphabets need a lot more support than just accepting them. But I wouldn't really consider plus signs exotic anyway.
anttisalmela··on Complexities of e-mail validation logic
It doesn't really hurt if some more exotic email addresses are not accepted, no one can really use them anyway.
anttisalmela··on A warning about 5.12-rc1
Intel CI did catch this: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-5....
anttisalmela··on Hackers hijack and publish mental health data of hundreds of people
Class action is very limited in Finland - the law that allows this is quite recent, there has been no class action suits yet at all and I'm not sure if it would be even applicable here.
anttisalmela··on Deep geothermal energy is poised for a big breakout
https://www.st1.com/geothermal-heat

Finnish Energy company ST1 is about to finish construction of 40MW geothermal plant near Helsinki, Finland. They've drilled to depth of 6.5km.

anttisalmela··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
Here in .fi employers are not permitted to do any background checks - all they can legally use is the information provided by the applicant. They can ask permission to request security clearance from the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service (Supo), which would then do the background checks, but this is allowed for only some jobs.

Working with children may require that you provide extract from the criminal record, but only certain crimes (violence, child abuse, sex offences, drug offences, human trafficking etc.) are considered.

anttisalmela··on Building binary deb packages: a practical guide
https://vincent.bernat.ch/en/blog/2019-pragmatic-debian-pack...
anttisalmela··on Why does OpenBSD still include Perl in its base installation?
createdb, createuser and pg_createcluster are not part of the PostgreSQL, but part of the postgresql-common packaging for Debian compatible distributions: https://salsa.debian.org/postgresql/postgresql-common/-/tree...
anttisalmela··on Linux was first released to the world from here 17.9.1991
My guess is that they're mostly optimizing to minimize impact on other operations and effort needed to host this - 80 TB storage from shared system might be nothing compared to needs of scientific computing, but letting requests directly there might be too much - having lots of cache at frontends will take care of that, and dual processors are needed to have that much memory.

And dual frontends will give nice redundancy.

anttisalmela··on Ask HN: Have you been infected by Covid-19? What is it like?
One Finnish entrepreneur describes his so far mild infection: https://perjantaikokki.fi/2020/03/14/greetings-from-a-corona...
anttisalmela··on Apt 2.0
apt has supported zstd since 1.6 already.
anttisalmela··on Nokia’s collapse turned a sleepy town in Finland into an internet wonderland
City uses combination of zoning laws, right of pre-emption and expropriation to have good and affordable housing supply. Policy is that land is not zoned until it's acquired by the city, which will then sell and lease lots - old landowners can't get huge windfalls from city growth and lease contracts force to build in allotted time.
anttisalmela··on Amazon’s Consumer Business Turned Off Final Oracle Database
I believe EnterpriseDB sells something like that.
anttisalmela··on Sysop Chat
Author is Finnish, and I'd say article is accurate for Finland. Local telecom monopolies made internet dial-up very expensive and BBS golden age was probably in mid nineties here, but the decline was very rapid.
anttisalmela··on Turtle meat – the ultimate survival diet?
Wikipedia does mention the incident: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_whale_attack#1970s
anttisalmela··on PostgreSQL Benchmark on FreeBSD, CentOS, Ubuntu Debian and OpenSUSE
At least Debian and Ubuntu has cfq as the default IO scheduler which probably is not the best choice here.
