antoaravinth··on Show HN: 1 KB JavaScript library for building applications
Thanks for the great library. I was trying to go-through the source and I have couple of questions.One, on line 135:

https://github.com/hyperapp/hyperapp/blob/master/src/app.js#...

You seems to be attaching global event handler. Looks like we can't have multiple event handlers at this time. Is this expected or it would be handled in the future?

2. Why do we use requestAnimationFrame for rendering? Do you think its going to offer best performance all the time? Note here, I'm new to requestAnimationFrame concept, so you can answer me like I'm a noob :)

antoaravinth··on Tracking friends and strangers using WhatsApp
I might be wrong here, but what if I change my settings to "not show the last seen status"? I guess in that case this doesn't work. Yes, I believe checking "Online" status frequently does give some information about my activity. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
antoaravinth··on Show HN: Moocha.io – A search engine for MOOCs
Could someone explain how this works? Meaning, I want to understand how the application uses the data from several MOOCs and get the result. Is that they manually build the data store and indexing on top of it? If so, what happens if a new course is added to the site? Link to source code would be really great, if you can provide one.
antoaravinth··on Why favor PostgreSQL over MariaDB/MySQL?
There is one point I need to add it here. Note that I'm not DB expert, but I need to say why I prefer Postgres over Mysql.

Create a table like the following:

create table user (name varchar(4));

MySql:

insert into user (name) values ('antoaravinth');

The above statement works even though I have given the size of my varchar as 4! And retrieving gives me `anto`!!

Postgres:

insert into user (name) values ('antoaravinth');

Stops me there with the relevant exception! That shows how Postgresql is doing small things right.

After seeing this, I never used MySql!

antoaravinth··on The Marketing Behind MongoDB
>I've used Postgres and Mongo pretty extensively, and for any reasonably seasoned developer, the startup overhead of an SQL system is a myth. There may upfront cost to learning how an RDMS and SQL work in the first place, but once you're familiar with them, they'll be faster than Mongo on any new project.

Exactly, I was very new to the RDBMS world and always I have preferred to go for MongoDB. Once in my side project, I thought of learning RDBMS and used Postgresql. Once I learnt how transactions, joins works then RDBMS was totally an easy topic.

I have used Jooq instead of ORM, which again helped me to learn the queries and underlying system of Postgresql!

antoaravinth··on Ask HN: What language/framework do you plan to use in your next project?
I will be using using Play! , Jooq and Postgres. For front end, I'm going to use React.
antoaravinth··on API Security Checklist for developers
>> Finally: don't use JWT. JWT terrifies me, and it terrifies all the crypto engineers I know. As a security standard, it is a series of own-goals foreseeable even 10 years ago based on the history of crypto standard vulnerabilities. Almost every application I've seen that uses JWT would be better off with simple bearer tokens.

This is really surprising to me. I use Play! framework and the whole play framework community suggests to use JWT for authentications as Play! doesn't support sessions out of the box. Is it just JWT itself is bad or how developers use it is bad? Just a noob question.

antoaravinth··on Writing a Service Worker
Service workers are really cool. I love them in using it in react project. In fact, create-react-app does inject a service worker for you to cache all the static files in production environment.
antoaravinth··on I make $10k per month with the Amazon Affiliate Program
Thanks for your reply. That's an interesting stat. I have a question on:

>>>As it is, I make about the same amount of money from YouTube revenue (40k subscribers) as I do with one of the highest-rated Linux courses on Udemy (a few hundred dollars a month)

How do you promote your youtube videos?

antoaravinth··on I make $10k per month with the Amazon Affiliate Program
Nice article. Does anybody here tried Udemy (or other online course affiliate) affiliate? Any success stories for the same?
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Passive income ideas for solo developers?
May be you need to look into https://www.indiehackers.com. The site is great that it contains all the information / stories / ideas, about developers who sell their projects!
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Hacker News API Push Notification Example?
Thanks, will definitely drop an email to them.
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
I felt the same. But if you want to understand the whole bible I would recommend The Bible Project : https://m.youtube.com/user/jointhebibleproject
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Are there any courses/course materials that teach oop concepts well?
This book definitely worth a read. Eventhough the examples are in Ruby, the concepts explained can be easily transferred to other languages as well.
antoaravinth··on Britecharts: D3.js based charting library of components
We are currently writing a BI report module and want to use any open source library for creating charts. This looks really nice. But I want to understand whether we could able to extend it to create say custom chart? Is that possible?

And also we can extend it to support say drilldown charts?

antoaravinth··on Build Yourself a Redux
As a beginner in Redux, can you tell me about the other ways to handle these boilerplate?
antoaravinth··on SQL is 43 years old – Here’s why we still use it today
Just a noob question on jooq. How do you construct error message which you use to send back to user on SQL exceptions. Like in case of duplicate item, you send back "User already exists". How your handling it? I know jooq just sends DataAccessException, now the question is how your converting that exception to a meaningful message which needs to be sent to say UI?
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Is it worth to learn Haskell?
Thanks for your valuable feedback! I'm definitely going to learn it.
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Is it worth to learn Haskell?
That's a very good idea. Are there any tutorial which does the same thing?
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: What are pros and cons of PostgreSQL and MySQL?
I was about to ask this question on whats the difference between default IntelliJ database plugin and DataGrip. Thanks for your comment on this.
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: What are pros and cons of PostgreSQL and MySQL?
Note I'm not an DB expert. I was trying to evaluate Postgres and Mysql for my side project. I went ahead with Postgres after doing the following example:

#Mysql

create table test (name varchar(3));

insert into test (name) values ("hello world");

>Query affected 1 row // success!!

Even though my varchar size is 3, Mysql didn't even complain about my string size in insert statement. The weird thing is that, when you try to retrieve the value it returns only the first 3 chars which is "hel" (What??). I was expecting an error message but Mysql was happy to eat my error!

#Postgres

create table test (name varchar(3));

insert into test (name) values ("hello world");

>> Error, value too long for the given varying (3)

The Postgres looks doing simple things correct for me.

antoaravinth··on Apple's Touch Bar Could Be a Flop
I had recently purchased Pro with touch bar. The only downside to touch bar is that, you won't get the feel of pressing a key. For example if you want to save a file in vim, you have to press ESC which at times leave you in doubt whether you pressed or not.

But touchbar id is great.

antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Building a side project that makes money. Where to start?
This is very true. I had my friends, who built a simple application for a Medical shop in Chennai,India. The medical shop has around 10+ branches around the city. The application helps them to print the invoice, find medicine across branches, raise for new medicine etc!

It all started when my friends went to each Medical shop and talked about the idea and one of the medical shop clicked.

antoaravinth··on Ask HN: Hacker News users reading habits
Exactly the same. By reading comments, you do get the community idea on that particular article. To be frank, I felt comments gives more information than the article it self, atleast IMHO.
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: How do you avoid staying too late at work?
That's exactly, what I'm doing in my current job. Just come on time and leave on time as well. Remember, "there will be always work for us to do", hence you need to set the expectations to your boss.
antoaravinth··on How I Became a Better Programmer
>> Take on big projects. Get uncomfortable.

To add few more points on this, work on side projects. I have to tell, how a side project can help you. For example, I was very comfortable using React in my project. I thought of building a simple preview container (for different sizes from desktop, mobile, tablets), where user can drag and drop few components, position them etc.

I'm in the initial phase of this and guess what, its really helpful. Making you uncomfortable at times (as in this case for using React to position components on the fly, which I had never done before) helps a lot.

antoaravinth··on Ask HN: BigQuery vs. Redshift vs. Athena vs. Snowflake
Just a question, which of these does have a good BI tool support?
antoaravinth··on Ask HN: What book do you recommend everyone should read?
Deep work is one of the best book I had read in this year

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1455586692/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=...

antoaravinth··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good code?
Not ruby, but Javascript.

Have a look at underscore js source:

https://github.com/jashkenas/underscore/blob/master/undersco...

I really loved it! Especially those _ functions are small, concise and easy to understand as well. Very good codebase. (very good example of functional programming concepts)

antoaravinth··on Ask HN: What are some good technology blogs to follow?
Thanks. The high scalability looks exactly what I wanted few months back. The blogs looks interesting and talks lot about scalability which I'm lacking so badly.
