antithesizer··on Hollywood Is Already Using AI (and Hiding It)
When there is a cost to a business from you knowing about something, prepare to be lied to.
antithesizer··on The Illusion of Thinking: Strengths and limitations of reasoning models [pdf]
Language mediates those interactions with the world. There is no unmediated interaction with the world. Those moments when one feels most directly in contact with reality, that is when one is so deep down inside language that one cannot see daylight at all.
antithesizer··on Washington Post's Privacy Tip: Stop Using Chrome, Delete Meta Apps (and Yandex)
Yes they block tracking
antithesizer··on Our kids are under surveillance: The hidden privacy crisis in Ed Tech
Approximately half of US citizens support mass surveillance (depending on how the question is phrased). Is democracy a "democratic value"?
antithesizer··on SaaS is just vendor lock-in with better branding
Saas, like streaming media generally, has always been a play to remove the control that comes with ownership from customers and keep it in the hands of big tech. Remember when they discontinued the iPod? It wasn't because people weren't buying.
antithesizer··on Meta: Shut down your invasive AI Discover feed
The difference is that on those apps it would be a miracle if your "publicly" shared post were ever seen by more than a handful of strangers. None of those send it to the front page except in very rare circumstances (going viral).

antithesizer··on I think I'm done thinking about GenAI for now
>or find another job.

Exactly. And if you consider AI to be the inevitable source of unprecedented productivity gains then this filtering of employees by success with/enthusiasm for AI makes sense.

antithesizer··on How to Read a Novel
To be fair you have to be very deep into literature to criticize dostoevsky as "overdramatic"
antithesizer··on Curtis Yarvin's Plot Against America
They're really scraping the bottom of the barrel for weird right-wing gurus/boogie men these days.

Nick Land where have you gone? Your house is in disarray.

antithesizer··on Mary Meeker's first Trends report since 2019, focused on AI
Yeah, the "call out AI in solidarity with working artists" thing is a fad. All Hollywood or anybody else has to do to get around that impulse is present AI-based content as indie production for whom there was never any question of hiring people to make everything by hand. That's the narrative small business has always used to garner sympathy despite poor working conditions and compensation: we either cut corners or we don't exist at all. And with AI media there will immediately be a trade-off of technical quality in favor of quirky creativity, which will humanize the first critically lauded generation of AI film, etc. and ultimately neutralize the prevailing squeamishness for overtly AI generated content.
antithesizer··on Deep learning gets the glory, deep fact checking gets ignored
The supposed location of the burden of proof is really not the definitive guide to what you ought to believe that people online seem to think it is.
antithesizer··on Builder.ai Collapses: $1.5B 'AI' Startup Exposed as 'Indians'?
I really wish I'd read this before starting my career as a scammer ten years ago.
antithesizer··on There should be no Computer Art (1971)
There should be no art at all. And indeed there is no art. So everything is fine.
antithesizer··on There should be no Computer Art (1971)
ah yes "aesthetic information"

definitely a real concern in art

antithesizer··on Gemini in Chrome
Yeah we already have a perfectly serviceable way to extract the meat from an article and avoid the filler (i.e. don't click just read the headline)
antithesizer··on AI makes the humanities more important, but also weirder
It's quaint how there are people who think something called "the humanities" exerts some occult guiding influence on the world. Studying the humanities would disabuse them of that notion.
antithesizer··on Can I stop drone delivery companies flying over my property?
my advice on this question is the same as my advice on most questions: befriend the crows.
antithesizer··on How to post when no one is reading
Writing, making music, making art, and engaging with the public in any way is almost always a waste of time. So unless you want to keep it up even in light of knowing that it's a waste of time, you should stop wasting your time. If you have to arduously convince yourself over and over that "this is important" or if you require the affirmation and reassurance of constant positivity-oozing social media followers to keep going, then you should not keep going. If it's not an end in itself for you then you need to reckon with the fact that there will certainly be nothing for you in it except the thankless task itself.

That may sound depressing but there are other things in life that absolutely are worthwhile in these ways. Helping people is generally a better goal in life than self-expression is.

antithesizer··on Show HN: Kan.bn – An open-source alterative to Trello
You can't trust companies. Indeed, you never could.
antithesizer··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
There's not much riding on convincing the broader public that AI is the real deal before it's proved itself beyond the shadow of any doubt. There's nothing they can do to prepare at this point.
antithesizer··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
The Greek transliteration "apologia" is often used for that sense of "apology" to skirt any ambiguity.
antithesizer··on Father Ted Kilnettle Shrine Tape Dispenser
I hear you're a redditor now, Father!
antithesizer··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
The incentive to cheat is the money paid to participate in the undergraduate program plus the career expected to follow from it. Remove those and you will have no students. But what you describe wouldn't remove the incentive to cheat, just make cheating a different and presumably more difficult process. But as long as it's easier to cheat than not to cheat, rational students will continue to cheat.
antithesizer··on Why we still can't stop plagiarism in undergraduate computer science (2018)
To the extent that the value of a university education is in the degree rather than the knowledge, cheating will remain rational. Since the business model of selling undergraduate programs depends on the value of most degrees as prerequisites to certain lucrative/prestigious careers, such programs are fundamentally broken. Don't try to save them by playing whack-a-mole with cheaters who understand the stakes of the game better than you do. That battle cannot be won.
antithesizer··on The Darwin Gödel Machine: AI that improves itself by rewriting its own code
That's cool. I saw a cloud once that looked like a bunny rabbit.
antithesizer··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
>or anyone else of that sort

This category is expansive enough to make fools of almost everyone on hn.

antithesizer··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
Before enterprise AI systems are allowed to spread their wings, first they need to support existing processes. Once they're able to generate the same customer-facing results relatively autonomously, then they'll have the opportunity to improve those results. So the first place to look for their impact is, I'd wager, cost-cutting. So watch those quarterly earnings reports.
antithesizer··on Mary Meeker's first Trends report since 2019, focused on AI
Come on. That's like being bugged about a pizza joint describing itself as "world famous"
antithesizer··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
Because it surpresses wages in the US, so Indian employers do not need to offer as much compensation to keep local workers who are considering emigrating.
