anthropodie··on An extensive tutorial on how to setup a Pi-Hole
Yes you can if you have enough memory.
anthropodie··on Why I only use plain black wallpapers
Switched to Sway which is a tiling window manager. Previously I used Gnome and my first thought was this makes wallpaper pretty much useless. I have gotten used to it. The only problem is I can't do the same on my work mac.

Just because it's Russian does not mean it's bad. Jetbrains is also Russian.

This is exactly the reason why I was looking for an alternative and found AGH.

AdGuardHome is free but AdGuard is not. What you are looking for is https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardHome

No one mentioned AdGuardHome yet?

AdGuardHome is far better than PiHole. It's a single Go binary and I think UI is better. It won't break if you upgrade your system. You don't need docker or LAMP stack. Just pull binary and run it. It will even generate systemd service file for you if you need.

I think r/selfhosted would love this too
anthropodie··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Twitter just implement ActivityPub?
Honestly that's stupid. Sooner or late people lean towards choice and freedom and when that happens monopoly breaks.
anthropodie··on Takahē: An efficient ActivityPub Server for small installs with multiple domains
>Ahh this is so exciting to see so much happening in this space all of a sudden!

It's like Elon unknowingly funded this space!

anthropodie··on Twitter was special. But it's time to leave
Yup it was. It has nothing to do with blog. I am just stating my problem with Twitter like others in this comment section.
anthropodie··on Twitter was special. But it's time to leave
I dont even have Twitter. I noticed how it drags us into things that we dont care about so I ditched it after brief use. I applaud your ability to only stick to your feed and not wonder off anywhere else on that site.
anthropodie··on Twitter was special. But it's time to leave
It's not as important as people think it is.
anthropodie··on Twitter was special. But it's time to leave
> To me Twitter is a huge treasure trove of information.

For thousands of years people did not need continuous feed of information to survive. I am not trying to undermine your comment. Just an observation that I wanted to share.

anthropodie··on Twitter was special. But it's time to leave
I don't think that is the case. The problem is Twitter pushes things your way that you have nothing to do about. They send you notifications to random actor's birthday. Then they push Tweets in your feed to maximize engagement. I know that can be turned off but way too many people don't and then they end up engaging in topics they know nothing about. This then make stupid things trend on Twitter.

People are not leaving Twitter because of politics, they are leaving because they are finally seeing the cesspool that Twitter is.

anthropodie··on Twitter was special. But it's time to leave
Yes but social media was not.

I am reading lot of people are moving to mastodon. I never thought federation was the future but the more I think about it the more it is starting to make sense.

The good part is federated alternatives do not look like massive echo chambers like Twitter is. Even if certain server does turn into an echo chamber the rest of network can just leave that server alone. Federation is closer to our actual societies. People don't clash on daily basis in our societies at least not as much as they do on Twitter. In real life, we avoid certain topics or getting involved with certain groups or going to regions/squares in cities where we know there is possibility of conflict. All these aspects are already well replicated into fediverse.

And only people on HN know this. Millions and millions of other people don't care. They enjoy shorts and spent quite some time on it.
anthropodie··on Show HN: Postcard – Easy way to make a personal website
In India, the only thing people use email for is when they are applying for jobs or other official requirements. Email is never used for personal communication. Forget about general public even the IT crowd does not use email for anything personal.
anthropodie··on India lifted 415M out of poverty in 15 years, says UN
We actually have D-Mart and they are quite huge but not comparable to Walmart. These are present at multiple locations in tier-1 cities but are hardly present in tier-2 cities. The thing is even though these are very popular they are not shutting down local shops in the region that they are located. The sheer demand is so high that people get things from local shops instead of standing in long queues at D-mart.

To answer your question, yes Walmart can happen but it has to be ready for some serious competition because other than D-mart other big player JioMart backed by Reliance has entered this space recently.

Those millions who moved to middle class are also helping the layer below them. These lifted households are spending their wealth on house helps, local grocery stores, taxis/autos and a whole lot of other local businesses. This trickle down effect then boosts development in cities where these IT hubs are located. Even more students then want to join these IT companies and enjoy the lifestyle of their seniors thus continuing the cycle.

P.s. We spend money in local shops because the stores like Walmart have still not penetrated the Indian market as they have outside India.

anthropodie··on Ask HN: ActivityPub or Mastodon?
Here you go https://pixelfed.social/discover. No idea why they would not put that on homepage.
anthropodie··on Ask HN: ActivityPub or Mastodon?
While everyone is talking about Mastodon because of Twitter, I want people to know that there is https://pixelfed.social which is alternative to Instagram.

Theoretically you should be able to follow anyone from pixelfed on Mastodon and vice versa because both support ActivityPub. I haven't tried doing that myself.

anthropodie··on Ex-Twitter Employees live-tweet their termination, good-byes
Can we consolidate Twitter threads into one? I am seeing at least one or two new threads here every hour all discussing same thing.
anthropodie··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
I was talking about private space company. I mean who thinks like I'm going to start a private space company that will launch freaking rockets in space. I don't think any private company did that before SpaceX
anthropodie··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
> Musk might be good at building and running engineering companies, but Twitter is not that. The social aspect is far more important than the underlying technology, and Musk and his advisors are terrible at that.

Agree

anthropodie··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
There is no security. You never know when things will go wrong. When pandemic happened software companies like Twitter were untouched but millions of workers felt its impact shaking them to the core and hence preparing them for better choices next time. The employees that are laid off I wish them best of luck but they should have been prepared for a day like this. They were earning good. It's things like this which transforms people. Maybe someone out of these employees will start next billion dollar company, who knows?
