anthonyb··on Listen to AOL’s CEO Fire Employee in Conference Call With 1,000 people
Except that in the call, he specifically says that he doesn't care about leaks. Which is it?
anthonyb··on My experience at a YC startup
Sometimes I wonder whether someone's split-testing their article, because it seems like you're getting a completely different one.

Right before the 'significant impact' sentence is this one:

One of the first things I did was steer the company
in the right direction from a strategy perspective.
I constantly butted head with one of the founders
but my strategies were clearly impacting the revenue
numbers. For example one of the tactics doubled the
    weekly revenue.
Seems pretty day-to-day to me. He's apparently in there as some sort of product manager / biz dev guy, but somehow you have the impression that he's a wet behind the ears engineer.
anthonyb··on Show HN: discover asteroids online
I just found one, I think. Very cool.
anthonyb··on Ask PG: Why is everybody hellbanned?
Tons of stories get flagged on the new page. They're usually spam.

In this case, it's part of a policy not to discuss meta-hn issues on hn. If you start a post asking why you were hell banned, or flagging/downvoting, it'll usually get flagged and/or removed.

anthonyb··on Ask PG: Why is everybody hellbanned?
I just took a look at the new page, and it doesn't look any different to normal.

The users of those posts aren't necessarily hellbanned - the posts are though. If enough people flag a new story I think it'll automatically be marked dead.

Usually it's just for spammy crap, or stories that aren't very interesting.

anthonyb··on "Australia Tax" is real: Infrastructure and Communications report
Allowing parallel importation would be a good start, Gerry Harvey be damned.
anthonyb··on "Australia Tax" is real: Infrastructure and Communications report
I think another major one is the cost and quality of our broadband networks. It's expensive here to download movies, or even to have a connection that's good enough to stream.
anthonyb··on "Australia Tax" is real: Infrastructure and Communications report
Not even that. Even games on Steam are routinely priced at retail and left there for years. Civ V, for example, was still $70 last time I checked.

And no, I didn't buy it :)

Update: Just checked - Released 24 Sep 2010, $69.99

anthonyb··on Physicists offer new theory on cancer
I stopped reading PZ Myers quite a while ago - he's almost entirely negative, and doesn't seem to be able to do much more than flame other people.

eg. his little diatribe on Haekel. Ok, Haekel was wrong, but the initial processes behind embryo development must still be pretty old, right? Nope, apparently, even mentioning Haekel == wrong, and your whole argument is wrong and you're stupid and should be embarrassed, etc, etc.

anthonyb··on Linus on "acting professionally"
O right - my reply is disgusting ad hominem and out of place, but suggesting that you call your wife "ludicrously stupid" and "extremely dumb" is not?

Edit: Just saw your reply to the OP: "If she is dimwitted to a point that she doesn't understand even when it's explained, I'd try to find a new wife."

Words fail me.

anthonyb··on Let's Buy Hackaday
Exactly. Personally, I'm super focused on not giving Jason Calcanis any of my hard earned money.
anthonyb··on Linus on "acting professionally"
Pretty sure there's a reason that you don't have a wife, if that's your attitude...
anthonyb··on Vole - a decentralized social network
They're also sarcastic.
anthonyb··on Salt: Like Puppet, Except It Doesn’t Suck
Which they seemed to fix pretty quickly, mainly by migrating to keyczar.
anthonyb··on How to Make a Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Adapter
Reminds me of the etherkiller: http://www.fiftythree.org/etherkiller/
anthonyb··on Chinese students and families fight for the right to cheat their exams
In case you missed it, that was for a Journal, not for undergraduate academic work.

The people writing journal papers are supposed to be doing high quality, original work, contributing to science, the knowledge of mankind, all that kind of thing.

anthonyb··on Convert Twitter Boostrap to a "flat" design
I'm not sure that high res displays would have much to do with it. Webfonts might though.
anthonyb··on Convert Twitter Boostrap to a "flat" design
It's not a fad, it's a return to Swiss design: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Typographic_Style
anthonyb··on GitHub was down
2:01 UTC We're still experiencing a large DDoS attack. The site is experiencing major packet loss and is mostly unavailable. We're working to further mitigate the attack.
anthonyb··on Mac Pro
I have intake filters on my PC, and it's also somewhere around 2 feet off the ground. Still cops a lot of dust.
anthonyb··on Mac Pro
So how many cubic feet per minute will convection cause in this case? 1? 10? Fans will move a hundred cfm or more without much noise.

Both of my recent hardware failures have been caused by dust accumulating in heatsinks, so having something which contributes to that is also a "very bad idea". Especially since the air passes through a relatively confined space which you can't regularly clear out.

anthonyb··on Mac Pro
Except that they have the fan backwards - suck air up from the floor... along with all of the dust and crap.

Unless you're supposed to have this on your desk to show it off. I suppose that wouldn't be unusual...

anthonyb··on R.I.P Atul Chitnis : The Man Who Changed the Open Source World
Atul's response is much classier and gives a lot more background info: http://lawgon.livejournal.com/45791.html?thread=165855#t1658...
anthonyb··on Why Cody Brown is Wrong - NYTimes vs Scrollkit
Not sure what the libel laws are like in the US, but based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_defamation_law It looks like making factually wrong and "injurious" statements counts.

Firstly, he has no idea how long it took the NYT to do the original work, and secondly it didn't take him an hour, it took him a year.

anthonyb··on Save my reading spot, damn it
It's not just web sites that do this. When you open the Twitter client on Android, for example, it'll go to the top of your feed instead of to the tweet that you read last, forcing you to scroll down, reading tweets until you find one that you've seen before.
anthonyb··on The MEAN Stack: MongoDB, ExpressJS, AngularJS and Node.js
Again, you haven't used Postgres very much if you think that. IP addresses are in there because they are generally useful, not because they're hard to implement.

Go have a look at the complex number implementation here: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.1/static/xtypes.html then come back and tell me that Postgres is "not a real programming language" (whatever that means these days).

anthonyb··on What a stupid idea
They're the internet equivalent of junk food.
anthonyb··on The MEAN Stack: MongoDB, ExpressJS, AngularJS and Node.js
"very limited datatypes"? You haven't used Postgres very much, have you? http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.2/static/datatype.html

And those are just the built-in ones, not counting PostGIS and other ones that you can define: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.1/static/extend-type-system...

anthonyb··on Black Start
One of my projects at the moment is to make a hand cranked USB power source. I stumbled across this while Googling for "stepper motor power generator" or something like that. It looked interesting, so I submitted it.
anthonyb··on Black Start
Because you're dealing with enough power to run a city. At a minimum thousands of kV and/or Amps. If something fails, all that energy has to go somewhere...
