anthlax··on Which vector database should I use? A comparison cheatsheet
Coming at this from a diffeeent angle, does anyone have any links to tutorials for use-cases? I’d love to see what vectorDB hype is about but as a regular engineer I’m unable to even grasp how to use a vectorDB
anthlax··on Have attention spans been declining?
The articles conclusion is explicitly that there is no valuable literature on the subject
anthlax··on Tuition costs have risen 710% since 1983
This theory makes sense but since the loan is essentially risk free, why are private student loan interest rates roughly 10%?
anthlax··on Suit alleges recreation.gov cluttered with junk fees, seeks millions in refunds
Perhaps the above comment means that the secondary factors affect the denominator - i.e more people go hiking on Saturday, so entering the Saturday lottery is worse than entering the Wednesday one

anthlax··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit
Perhaps you meant slashdot.org - this is a typo squatter

anthlax··on San Francisco Homeowners Lose $260B in Value
I’ll be moving to SF in the next month. Anecdotally rents are still hovering at ~3.3k in the mission to ~4k in e.g polk gulch.

anthlax··on OpenAI Employee: GPT-4 has been static since March
Call for regulation then threaten to pull out of EU because of regulation?

anthlax··on Waymo and Uber partner to bring autonomous driving technology to Uber
Google will absolutely not sell Waymo after such an incredibly steep investment.
anthlax··on Update on Sharing
My current favorite corp speak is “we can’t wait to share it with you”. Seems like it’s in literally every product announcement. At least this one is positive
anthlax··on How to reduce stress and overcome anxiety as a software developer
Step 1: stop reading chatGPT / AI news
anthlax··on MLCopilot: Human Expertise Meets Machine Intelligence for Efficient ML Solutions
Some notes: - based on GPT3.5 - essentially, the test was “how well can GPT produce ML code” (tune hyper parameters, base off of case studies) - did not compare to the human case, only to other ML models (unless “human” is considered perfect, in which case GPT got 86%. Although I don’t think a human would perform at 100% of the benchmark)
anthlax··on You probably don't know how to do Prompt Engineering
Alternatively LLM’s will have gotten good enough that prompts can be general enough to not need tuned skills. I.e the average person can prompt well enough to get great results
anthlax··on ChatGPT for Hardware Design
I’ve been unable to replicate this. Could you please show me an example? I ask everyone who makes this claim and have yet to see a concrete example. I just can’t get it to do anything useful for me. I feel like I’m missing the boat!
anthlax··on Tuql: Automatically create a GraphQL server from a SQLite database
Could you explain that “two tables” issue again? I’m trying to think of a way that DB constraints (I’m using Postgres, fwiw) couldn’t handle denormalization, but imo there’s a constraint for everything. Force a 1:1 relationship, or add a check constraint so you literally cannot denormalize.
anthlax··on It doesn’t take much to make machine-learning algorithms go awry
I believe these are added after the response is generated. I.e the response is used as the query and the results are returned.
anthlax··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
Any examples?
anthlax··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
FTFY: Worst case scenario.

Change will come eventually and it will be painful. But I don’t want my kids to deal with it - I’d rather take it head on and deal with the consequences then praying that we push it to the next generation.

anthlax··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
The other day, I was configuring fluxbox WM. I decided to use chatGPT because I didn’t really feel like parsing the wall of text that was the spec.

I asked it how to add default names to the workspaces. It gave me an answer that looked so plausible I didn’t question it. 15-20 reloads later, I went over to the spec to verify chatGPTs work.

It lied through it’s teeth. Entirely made up the API. Typically we see the “ChatGPT made stuff up” though the lens of an expert - they can immediately tell that the AI is lying. I finally felt it though the lens of a beginner - I fully believed it and it ended up wasting around an hour of mine.

If a co-worker did this to me (straight up lied about an API) I’d be pretty upset - I have no problems with people saying “I don’t know” but pretending isn’t cool. I can’t be mad at openAI because it’s just a tool, but a tool I won’t be going back to to learn things.

anthlax··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
SamA strikes me as overly disingenuous - as if most of his interactions are marketing pieces / warfare. The entire lex + sama podcast seemed this way to me.

I’m incredibly biased though and feel slighted (as a part of humanity) by openAI’s actions, so perhaps I’m looking at his actions through a hateful lens.

anthlax··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
The trust ecosystem of the AI community - most every breakthrough was published publicly until OpenAI decided to take advantage of that.

Besides that, this comment contained a ton of statements on what “would” have happened had Google not published. Interesting but worthless way to defend openAI’s actions.

anthlax··on The Coming of Local LLMs
Interesting! How do you know this?
anthlax··on Emergent abilities of large language models
Ah! So multimodality will convince you of consciousness? After all, human neurons are electrical charges, just as bits are.
anthlax··on Emergent abilities of large language models
And the opposite? What if the world is full of people like who you claim that the machine is pretending to be conscious, and is only “quacking like consciousness”? Would you be okay not affording a conscious thing rights?
anthlax··on Be careful what you test or deploy to Vercel
Bursty workloads? I.e people use my app from 9am - 11am and then nothing for the rest of the day. I’m paying $8 but only around $2 of compute is actually helpful. Setting spend limits on lambda / vercel / cloudfns means the entire $8 go to my bursty workload
anthlax··on Show HN: Side-Project: FlowChartGPT – Turn Text into FlowCharts
Is this open source? What model does this use? This is mind blowing.
