anthilemoon··on The default effect: why we renounce our ability to choose
I'm actually in the process of interviewing my dad about that! He's an engineer and used to be sent to war zones to assess local military airport infrastructures. He was sometimes dropped there with a military unit just for a few days. There were time when they didn't all make it back.

I always thought there was a certain coldness to the way he was making decisions, but it all makes much more sense now that I know more about those past experiences. He seems to think it's the result of the working conditions. I have tons of notes and audio recordings which I want to clean up and publish at some point.

I wrote that article. Thanks for those examples.

> it means that at one point you though "is there another option?" about snacks

Yes, that was my point in the article, though maybe not clear enough. This conversation has given me lots of ideas to improve it. Thank you!

anthilemoon··on The default effect: why we renounce our ability to choose
Author of the article here. I did not know that – thank you for sharing. This makes the poem even better but definitely not the best choice for the article!
anthilemoon··on London will be overwhelmed by Covid in a fortnight says leaked NHS briefing
I live in London but I went back to Paris where I'm from for Christmas. Here in Paris it was the norm: everyone got tested before driving to their families for Christmas. The days before Christmas there were white tents every couple of blocks where you could get tested without an appointment. You're probably right that's what lots of people in London did as well.
anthilemoon··on Are we too busy to enjoy life?
OP here. People losing their jobs during this pandemic is a tragedy, but the article is about making time for the things that truly matter in life. Seems like I didn't manage to convey that well.

Anecdotal but many people in my family don't have jobs and are still too busy to spend time with their parents, siblings, etc. who would love to support them.

anthilemoon··on Show HN: A tiny extension to make it easier to save snippets into Roam Research
I copy and paste lots of stuff into Roam, which got tedious after a while, so I created a tiny extension for Roam. It basically grabs the text you highlight, formats it with markdown, and appends the source (title and URL of the page where the snippet came from).

You then click escape and paste the snippet in a new block in Roam. It's available on the Chrome Store and I also submitted it to Firefox so should be live soon. It's nothing complicated but it makes my life much easier!

anthilemoon··on Show HN: I made a site where students can create and share flashcards and notes
I'm currently working on a small flashcards tool myself so this immediately peaked my interest! Great execution - love the design and the group aspect of it.

The trollbox is probably the scariest part.
anthilemoon··on Don’t pin the butterfly: not all hobbies need to become hustles
Great way to put it.
anthilemoon··on Don’t pin the butterfly: not all hobbies need to become hustles
This is beautiful/a bit sad and articulates perfectly why sometimes hobbies are better left alone. Thanks for sharing.
anthilemoon··on Online panic: a coronavirus case study
I agree — this is happening and people are dying. I just wish we could acknowledge the tragedy without creating a non-existent World War Z.
anthilemoon··on Online panic: a coronavirus case study
Sorry if that's how it came across! Didn't mean to be insensitive. My point was that so far the coronavirus is not worse than the seasonal flu (400,000 deaths each year), where we don't see the same panic.
anthilemoon··on Show HN: I built a community for women entrepreneurs and makers
This is one of my favourite communities on the Internet. Lots of thoughtful, stimulating conversations. Thanks so much Marie for building and managing Women Make.
anthilemoon··on Is there a limit to the human brain’s capacity?
The brain is obviously an organ and not a machine, that was just a metaphor. The article goes on saying exactly what you're saying.
anthilemoon··on The Pygmalion Effect: an invisible nudge towards success
I can't access the link — would love to read that paper. Here is a more detailed and nuanced article showing that it did replicate when the bias was unconscious: https://www.discovermagazine.com/mind/being-honest-about-the...

Also I never used the word "smart" once in the article. I talk about learning behavior and work performance instead.

The good thing is that it's currently impossible to game things I think. My blog is mentioned in this article. I post all of my articles on HN and so far I haven't noticed any pattern that would help me predict which ones will do well. The algorithm seems pretty robust.
anthilemoon··on Neuromyths: Debunking the misconceptions about our brains
That's not the point made in the article though — the point is that IQ tests are predictive of many things, including longevity.
anthilemoon··on Show HN: Search Engine on the Top of Twitter to Find Jobs
That's really great. Lots of job offers on Twitter that are currently hard to find. What's next in terms of product roadmap?
anthilemoon··on Science-based tips to sleep better
Great feedback! Making a note of it and adding to my list :) Thanks!
anthilemoon··on Brainstorming: How to Generate New Ideas
It's probably because it's the hardest to implement. It requires to step out of the room and actually talk to users.
anthilemoon··on Mental Models Box – A collection of models useful in everyday life
Thanks for sharing! I like the simple design. One piece of feedback I got when I wrote a blog post about mental models [1] was that mental models are easy to understand, but people struggle to figure out how to actually use them. In addition to the examples, it would be great to add concrete applications to each cards.

anthilemoon··on How to get 30k Hacker News visitors to your website
Super interesting, thanks for sharing. I had never read about anyone managing to get consistent traffic from HN.
anthilemoon··on Mental models
Thanks for the feedback! I mostly write as a way to learn new stuff and it really helped me to create this list. Good idea for a follow up article.
anthilemoon··on Mental models
Fair point! Thank you. Decided to leave it in there. :)
anthilemoon··on Mental models
I'm the author of the article. Thanks for the hug of death! Currently on the phone with my hosting provider. A friend will help me move to Netlify later.

If you did manage to read the article and enjoyed it, I write a weekly newsletter with stuff like that. Will actually send the next one in a few hours: https://nesslabs.com/newsletter

I didn't realise it was fake. If it is I'll remove it once the website is up-and-running again.
anthilemoon··on Mental models
I'm on the phone with them right now to upgrade and will then change hosting providers. They're way too expensive. I only installed Analytics yesterday, but got about a thousand hits in the past 30 minutes.

Thanks so much for pasting it here! That's my website and I'm on the phone with my hosting provider.
