anotherboffin··on Cowboy Proves That E-Bikes with Removable Batteries Can Be Beautiful
Crank motor will allow you to have derailleur gearing (with a chain) or a hub gearbox (Shimano Alfine, for instance) while keeping that nice, low-maintenance belt drive.

I don't own one, but I rode quite a few and sold a lot of them (mainly powered by Bosch systems) in a previous job.

It obviously depends where you live, but most of the time, it's recommended to remove the battery for fear of theft, protection from the cold (part of the year), and (obviously) charging. Protection from theft because a battery generally represents a significant amount of the total cost of the bike. A 500 Wh Bosch battery runs around $1K, and I've seen more exotic ones run up to about $2.4k. Also, they're not that easy to steal, but someone with the intent of stealing could also damage the battery enough and compromise the weather sealing (for example) which could be a significant security risk.

I really don't think racist is the term to describe this discrimiation, since you could hardly say Swiss and French are from a different race.

anotherboffin··on I almost lost my hearing from the lid on the tank of a toilet
Absolutely, though I thought it was due to my earplugs. Then again, they're standard supermarket stuff so I have no idea how they "colour" the sound.
anotherboffin··on More evidence essential oils 'make male breasts develop'
The hypothesis is that topical exposure is linked to the hormone changes. For me, that means tea tree oil in toothpaste shouldn't be something to worry about.

CH = Switzerland indeed (from "Confoederatio Helvetica").

About DACH, I think your interpretation is correct, but I had never seen it either.

Unlimited vacation sounds nice, but from what little I read on it, it wasn't really unlimited. Rather, it seems to be based on what's acceptable at your workplace and how much work you can get done.

Hopefully someone with first-hand experience or more knowledge will elaborate a bit on this.

A new pair of keys are also generated when a device is wiped and restored from backup (in my experience on iOS).
anotherboffin··on Project Valerie – The world's first triple display laptop
I previously ran a quick Google search and found no other triple-display laptop, but I must admit I didn't spend too much time looking.
anotherboffin··on Project Valerie – The world's first triple display laptop
The first thing it reminded me of was the ThinkPad W700ds, but I didn't remember the second display was that small.

Absolutely. All projects will need maintenance and I hope there will be a way for people to get the necessary training.

Plus, coal deposits do run out sooner or later, so keeping coal mines and power plants in business just kicks the problem to a few decades down the road.

Your suggestion is good, but their reply is a little underwhelming. I didn't expect their customer service to be of this caliber.
anotherboffin··on FCC ushers in a troublesome new world for online privacy
>The approach taken by the FCC will lead to a world in which technological progress is dictated by the actions of regulators [...] instead of by innovators experimenting with ways to provide users with groundbreaking new services.

It's interesting how the author seems oblivious to the fact that the "groundbreaking new services" in general seem to care very little about user privacy.

anotherboffin··on Berlin Is Bringing Back Subway Trains from the 1950s
> Has anyone encountered other trains in exile?

IIRC old narrow-gauge Spanish trains are being used in San José, Costa Rica as they have opened a small number of train lines in these last 8-10 years.
