anotherboffin··on The cameras worked fine, but their maker said they had reached their end of life
If the manufacturers can’t figure this out on their own, then yes, by all means.
anotherboffin··on Bir Tawil
Do you have a flag?
anotherboffin··on Why are TV Cameras still huge and expensive? (2019) [video]
Last I heard they did OIS (stabilization) at the sensor level, not AF. Would be curious if you had a source.
anotherboffin··on Unapproved books now a felony in Manatee County schools
Came here to say pretty much this. Conflating two states in a nation with two different nations in the EU isn’t exactly the best way to say “everything is ok here”.
anotherboffin··on Get Running with Couch to 5K
Absolutely. Zwift keeps it quite interactive but I’ve heard good things about the Wahoo platform as well. Lots of structured training plans for beginners and more experienced riders alike.
anotherboffin··on The changing fortunes of Japanese camera manufacturers
That was Chase Jarvis if memory serves. Even published a book about it.
anotherboffin··on Cache of 19th-Century Blue Jeans Discovered in Abandoned Arizona Mineshaft
I had a pair of Levi’s Commuter Pro that were 5 years old (with a lot of wears and washes) and still going strong before I lost them :(

Somehow it seems like they’re now discontinued.

anotherboffin··on Pouring the 200 inch disk at Corning Glass Works
> There's a blog post I can't find any more about a camera nut visiting one of the last Japanese refactories capable of making lenses and the excruciating processes they go through to make complex zonally variant glass.

Was it this one?

anotherboffin··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
Apple took 30 minutes when last I had them replace a battery…
anotherboffin··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
Not saying it’s not a good thing, but this tries to address the symptom and not the cause. It might actually lead to drivers being even less careful since they will just blindly trust the car (as we’ve seen in many Autopilot accidents)
anotherboffin··on Pedal Me bans staff riders from wearing helmets for safety reasons
Hövding?

I thought they had two sizes, but maybe not the new ones.

anotherboffin··on Moskva cruiser sank while being towed in a storm – Russian Defense Ministry
The Economist [0] (paywalled) says the factories making the Nautilus missiles have been heavily bombarded and that the Ukrainian military doesn’t seem to have many of these missiles. I guess they were just very carefully choosing their target and the time to strike?

anotherboffin··on Omega Swatch Speedmaster
You have a point, but I don’t think Swatch is selling these online. All I’ve read is that they’re not a limited edition, but available in “select stores only”.
anotherboffin··on U.S. Surnames with No Vowels
> There's also a town in Yugoslavia with the name Srb and the surname could mean someone from that town.

Interesting to see Yugoslavia being mentioned when the town is in present-day Croatia (as per the link in the post).

anotherboffin··on Food Packaging
Pretty incredible work for stuff that’s just going to end up incinerated or in a landfill…
anotherboffin··on Blogger in Ohio discovered runner in Florida cheating in a half-marathon (2017)
The overall wording and use of all-caps in some places is also pretty weird.
anotherboffin··on 25 Gbit/s internet as a normal customer
I also hope all of Switzerland would do this. Downgrading from fiber to ADSL is ok, but was definitely not fun.
anotherboffin··on Adobe XD, where did it go wrong?
Nitpick: they’re complementary. LR has cataloguing/sorting/filtering/metadata handling features that PS doesn’t have, and has an “edit in Photoshop” option for the more complicated workflows you mention. Not many people would enjoy using Bridge and PS to sort their photos.
anotherboffin··on Ask HN: Does targeted advertising work at all?
> What does the acronym APAC mean?

Asia-Pacific

anotherboffin··on Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy for Depression
Just to give some context. It’s not directly my line of work, but my employer filled out a New Drug Application (NDA) with the FDA recently and we were told the whole thing exceeds 200’000 pages. Given the size and amount of data in there, one year seems reasonable for FDA review.
anotherboffin··on Why are German numbers backwards?
Depends on the canton in Switzerland. To my knowledge most say “huitante” except for Geneva which says “quatre-vingt”.
anotherboffin··on The Impact of Vitamin D Level on Covid-19: Systematic Review Meta-Analysis
For me the key words in this conclusion are “[…] largely vitamin D replete” but for example, during winter in the Northern hemisphere, are we as a population really Vit. D replete?
anotherboffin··on Led by France, 10 EU countries call on Brussels to label nuclear energy as green
Despite the many shared traits with some fossil fuels: extraction by mining, finite amounts, subject to geopolitics… uranium is a chemical element and not a fossil fuel, especially the “fossil” part.
anotherboffin··on Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions
OP mentioned “reasonably coordinated by” and, to my understanding, never implied Linux was a single-person operation.
anotherboffin··on Congratulations, Mini, you made the stupidest turn signals ever
Slightly off topic, but FWIW the website is also a mess. You’re allowed to read one sentence at a time as they’re interspersed with ads, autoplaying videos and sign-up forms.
anotherboffin··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
Anecdotal as well, but Switzerland has loads of them too. I appreciate the fact that it gets more people on bikes, but I'm a bit concerned about them going on terrain way above their level (as noted above) or risking accidents with hikers.
anotherboffin··on Element Matrix Services Announces Element Home
I also think the explanation could use a bit of work. If I have more than 5 users, do I need to switch to Nickel? Get another Home plan?
anotherboffin··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
I don’t know the alternatives, but do know you have software like Calibre in order to keep your book collection despite changing your device.
anotherboffin··on Immunology Is Where Intuition Goes to Die
Well a lot of the T cells will enter the bloodstream in order to spread through the body. My knowledge of this is fairly limited but chemokines serve as the navigation instruments in many cases: a site of inflammation or infection will have immune cells expressing these signaling molecules that will slowly diffuse and create a gradient. T cells (for example) will follow this gradient to get to the site of interest (the process is called chemotaxis).

No book recommendations off the top of my head, but I’ll post back if something comes up.

anotherboffin··on Ask HN: Are you ok?
The way I see it, a bit of time in a slightly more boring workplace, especially with a better manager, could really help to find stability in your life and recover from all the verbal abuse.

I hope you find a job that isn't the same thing, they really do exist! Most of all, I hope it works out for you. Best of luck!
