anoother··on ZFS on Linux v0.7.0 released
I guess this refers specifically to the following bullets:

* Vectorized RAIDZ - Hardware optimized RAIDZ which reduces CPU usage. Supported SIMD instructions: sse2, ssse3, avx2, avx512f, and avx512bw, neon, neonx2

* Vectorized checksums - Hardware optimized Fletcher-4 checksums which reduce CPU usage. Supported SIMD instructions: sse2, ssse3, avx2, avx512f, neon

* GZIP compression offloading - Hardware optimized GZIP compression offloading with QAT accelerator.

All use vector and/or SIMD instructions on the CPU, thoughh QuickAssist (QAT above) is available on dedicated add-in card also.

Serious question -- why not? What makes this a bad idea?
anoother··on Movidius launches a $79 deep-learning USB stick
USB-C is a connector, and has no effect on speed.

I think you're referring to USB 3.1 gen2, which would double the theoretical bandwidth to 10Gbps.

anoother··on 3D scanning by dipping into a liquid
I think the main reason would be that they can compare their scans directly against the original models.

If they were to use real world objects, any comparison would have to use another scanner, which would introduce its own bias.

anoother··on 4MB Laptop How-To: How to put a “grown-up” Linux on a small-spec laptop (2000)
The kmandla blog is exactly what I thought of when I saw this post.

I can heartily second the recommendation, and I'd love to know what the author is up to nowadays.

anoother··on AMD's Future in Servers: New 7000-Series CPUs Launched and EPYC Analysis
Past experience suggests it's very likely they will be compatible, at least at a basic level.

See eg. or Socket 'L' vs. 'F' in AMD's history (hint -- they're the same thing), or the various Socket 2011 Intel iterations across server/enthusiast markets.

You may lose out on some features (eg. RDIMM support with server CPU, overclocking support in either direction, etc.)

Untimately, I hope, the cross-compatibility of EPYC CPUs on enthusiast chipsets will be a decision for motherboard manufacturers to make, as it has been in the past. 64 PCIe lanes should be enough for... at least some of us ;)

ETA:

As parent mentioned, the situation this time is more complicated.

Threadripper in an EPYC board is likely to be problematic -- the CPU doesn't have enough PCIe/Infinty Fabric connectivity to allow CPU links and PCIe to be active simultaneously. Even in a 1P system, only half of the board's potential PCIe lanes would be available. Due to these issues, it's likely such a setup may not be supported. It would be a strange thing to try in the first place, however, especially if equivalent EPYC parts end up similarly-priced to Threadripper.

EPYC in a Threadripper board is the news I'm hoping (and expecting) to be better -- the parent talked about powering the extra dies... an interesting consideration, though I expect (and hope) the only pins which won't be broken out on a Threadripper board will be the extra PCIe lanes.

Yes, but why does the WM need to provide it? Everyone has preferences - pick your own.
anoother··on Rediscovering the Intel AMT Vulnerability
Yes, there is.

I haven't looked into the exploit, but if the attack uses AMT's http(s) interface, you could also simply access the AMT port(s) from a remote machine. The service simply allows one to speak to the local ME.

I don't think it is. DDR3 UDIMMs, EUDIMMs, RDIMMs and LRDIMMs all use the same physical format.

Lately I've been using this as a way to quickly apply selective config. It feels 'hacked-on', but it works.

anoother··on Dell’s 32-inch 8K UP3218K Display Now for Sale
2-3 years ago I got a 28" 4k TN panel for ~£280. Then a 24" 4k IPS for ~£200.

This year 2 27" 4k IPSs for ~£350 each (both LGs, the first one a better model but cheaper because pre-Brexit-vote).

Prices have gone up from my POV.

In answer to your question: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/monitors/by-type/4k-ultra-hd?... -- under £300 for 24" 4k IPS. OCUK is a UK subsidiary of Caseking (de), so I'd be surprised if similar prices weren't available across Europe.

In all the above experience, I've found Acer to be very good (3 monitors, 2 excellent and 1 with pixel defects), Benq to be poor (multiple returns before I gave up and bought something cheaper) and LG to be absolutely flawless.

anoother··on AMD to consider coreboot/Libreboot support for Ryzen
This refers to a reply in the AMA that reads:

"Thanks for the inquiry. Currently we do not have plans to release source code but you make a good argument for reasons to do so. We will evaluate and find a way to work with security vendors and the community to everyone's benefit."

To consider this 'consideration' seems rather.... hopeful.

True, but boards/laptops very rarely have the required Displayport or HDMI 2.0 outputs to drive such resolutions at native refresh rates.

I have a used GTX 645 for a similar purpose. £20 second-hand, pushes 4k@60Hz with extreme ease.

Of course, I also have a GTX 1060 and an RX 480 for... other purposes.

anoother··on GPU-Oriented PCIe Expansion Cluster
A used Tesla s1075 from eBay looks like a good bet. That's my plan, anyway.

Would require some modding to use more up-to-date GPUs (there are some mounting studs on the chassis floor that need trimming) but the forced airflow means that passive cards like the original Xeon Phis are also a possibility.
