Suing over borders. Did I mention small company? What would it cost me, in 2007, to sue a US company from my country in europe? With what chance of winning?
They held and stole quite a bit of money from my company when it was small 'for fraud'; it was a very hard time, and of course there was no fraud. It was a long time ago and I don't get angry anymore, but it was a nightmare and nothing you can do. Since then I moved to local processing, issuing, acquiring; I can thank Paypal for all of that. Hope they die a miserable death, but I guess 50B$ says at least the managers will drive their lambo's/yachts around no matter what happens unfortunately.
I code review vibe coded stuff for companies quite often and many people tell me confidently the AI runs safely inside a container & VM, while it really doesn't. They don't have any way to check as they don't know how things work, but the AI mentioned virtual machines and containers and that's what they remembered.
Never had issues with bluesky, but i'm a lurker and I have a llm filtering (here on HN, X, bluesky, reddit etc) which removes political stuff and boosts stuff I likely will like.
Guess one has to, because there are just too many people on there. I don't like it but what can I do. What I hate the most is that states/countries, prime ministers and kings post on there. And that the emergency services of some countries have that as primary channel. I understand cross posting to the most popular social channels, but primary? That SHOULD be a local channel, not some dystopian shit hole you could be banned from randomly.
Yeah, I always ignore them, first in my own country (NL) and after that in EU. Even if they fine (which they don't for small companies/persons), they will not spend money/efforts to cash the fine anyway, especially across borders. I had a few useless fines in the 35 years of my company, never will pay them.
It already is, that’s why I prefer companies I can physically visit. My hosting, email, payments for my company are now places I can reach within hours and just have a chat. In person, people are a lot less nasty and they cannot yet (…) fob me off with an AI.
For not well off geeks you could just solder a bunch of resistors together and get vastly better sound than from the crappy PC speaker and there were games that supported it and I wrote some software for it (which unfortunately is gone I think). I had a lot of just having this on the pc in the house.
I just throw it in AI; if it’s tech docs, I tell it to build whatever is there, if it’s something else I tell it to give me max 5 points to tell me the meat of it. Either way, I will never read it myself. This works well for tech docs/apis really; it usually gets it to work fine without me checking, even though the docs are usually subtly wrong in many places; after that I can read working code and that works a lot better for my brain.
You are saying programming IS going to go back to what it was? If yes, great! But how exactly? Why would anyone do that and why would companies want that?
I like it for generating docs when I know they won’t be read, which is most presentations, vc docs, work docs, emails, etc. I used to write them carefully but no one read anything for decades now, at work (we have served many clients; 1000s over the decades), but they still demand the docs (‘send us all you have so we can prepare’ type of joke); AI is great for that really. Looks good and no one cares anyway.
That is inevitable really… I hear my colleagues using these phrases already and I notice I automatically read past it myself online as I see it so often, I just filter it out without thinking.
Unfortunately, I know more than a few companies who do that. The same kind of developer who used SourceSafe to just checkout the entire project (thus locking it) while busy with it. And then pop a intranetcrm_200826_0713.zip on SharePoint. Enough of them around still unfortunately.
if i have to sit in an office to have job security (which is a big if as we see all the time) then i rather get thrown out. that never happened in the past almost 4 decades though: i leave because i get better offers. and never have been in an office, ever.
me too, but its the vast minority of all companies i have been in the past 35 years. i don't want to sit in a room or even building with the rest of the drones of whom i have no clue what they are doing there expect burning money and wasting time of others.
but sure there are enough exceptions to turn up once in a blue moon to have drinks with the new peeps who seem nice on slack.
Not so long ago this was also the thought about mobile phones, now everyone is walking around with them so they can film/pic anyone all the time while 'faking' to be doing something else. If there is any convenience for people to be had, they will go for it. I think the convenience part over phones is just not there (yet). The experience is just not yet anything worthwhile / good / smooth so it's just lame, cringy and clunky, outside of filming. Maybe someone will make something that works, maybe it will be something completely different.
But if it gets a smartphone moment, no-one will talk about the privacy and the cameras anymore and that's why they keep trying.
When I was in university living in some crappy room at a friend of my parents, it was freezing and there were some transportation issues because of it, so I didn't go to classes and was bored around programming (I wrote Pascal those days for fun and profit), so a struggled to the closest shop to ask what's interesting; Phantasmagoria it was.
Good memories playing that one on that massively heavy monitor that was normal back then, under the blankets with ice on the inside of the windows and on top of the blanket.
> Also, I taught myself machine code programming when I was 11.
Yep, and I didn't know assembly/assemblers were a thing (as they were not in magazines), so I typed and still type (for fun) everything in HEX. data 3E,0A,etc.
A lot of my family worked at the Veghel, NL factory 60s to 90s (maybe some of them still do but I do not know); all got boxes of the stuff to take home. The shrinkflation started a long time ago, but, according to my old-uncles not as bad as it is now.
It is a nice idea ; I will try it later. Everyone can poop on AI, that’s fine, but this specifically states it is AI and how it is used, so just click on another HN link to cry about AI, not the ones that actually specifically mention it.
Less and less though and you need to go through quite a bit of trouble sometimes already. Banking, gov apps, I know more and more companies you cannot enter nor clock in without smartphone etc. Sure, you can just resign, move country, try to find another bank; in the end you will run out of options as they are all moving there.
