anonymous_i··on Redis adopts dual source-available licensing
Okay developers can't do anything now.

Sue is probably not the better description of the thoughts I had. Let's say, can't the developers do anything in an act of retaliation? Given that so much work came from the community.

> ... advertised

Yeah. Wrong choice of word. Using one kind of license to get the attention of public is in spirit akin to advertising(that was the line of thought I had). I am not doubling down on stupified things I said, I am tryina explain what I thought.

So... if I can re-ask the question , I take my dumb-comment yesterday back and ask it like this :

can't the community do in act of retaliation against these acts ?

can't we mandate community approval for license updates when the community is also participating in contribution and popularizing its usage

I do not have anything against Redis. What is going to happen to the future of FOSS and software in general , if once open(open source and Libre) projects end up walled or proprietary etc.

anonymous_i··on Redis adopts dual source-available licensing
Stupid ask:

Can't developers sue this company for false advertising ?

This started off as one thing and ended up being something else. They probably at any point did not hint about changing license in the future, just guessing.

For any open projects , couldn't dev. request for keeping the license as is or Free(or whatever relevant) before letting their code merged.

This may sound illogical to someone who is a domain expert, but this is just a dumb question from someone who has almost 0 clue on this topic.

I disagree with Math had to be learned when you are young.

Intelligent people will end up learning something profound when they are young. If they find something else interesting enough at a later stage in their life, they apply some transformation learning.

Leibniz did not start his training in Math until he was ~30

> Thus Leibniz went to Paris in 1672. Soon after arriving, he met Dutch physicist and mathematician Christiaan Huygens and realised that his own knowledge of mathematics and physics was patchy. With Huygens as his mentor, he began a program of self-study that soon pushed him to making major contributions to both subjects, including discovering his version of the differential and integral calculus.

He did not realize it because, someone stole his brain ?

I think , what he is trying to say is, ascribing a single language to a diversified nation like India is not a good idea.

> Why do you believe that north indian language and religion are nonsense?

Free speech.LoL.I am not saying OP is right or is following HN etiquette, but that it is OP's opinion(not fact, not truth).

> I don't think North Indians are backward relative to South Indians. Although they are relatively poor.

Bihar is the most uneducated state in the country. Kolkata is a terrible to place to conduct business of any kind. Although , this is not representative of the North.

But what is North anyway ? Should we consider anything above Madhya Pradesh North ? Does Gujarat count as North ? Does Mizoram count as North ?

Consider doctors, who are extremely busy in their profession. Although, doctors do not spend enough time talking to their children, somehow they turn out to be alright.

I am thinking, are children sensing their economic backlog way to sooner than we know ?

anonymous_i··on Greg Joswiak replaces Phil Schiller as head of Apple marketing
Kay was made Apple fellow so he could be lured to work for Apple from where ever he was then working (General Magic or Xerox), can't really remember.-- I think folklore has something on this as well.

Atkinson was given fellowship because Jobs wanted to make him happy. [1]

The way I see it, Apple gives fellowship to people to make them feel themselves important and keep everyone in the room happy and when the press put's their name next to other giants, that must be massive ego satisfaction -- in a positive sense(it was apparently Schiller's idea to use click wheel for original iPod.[2]), for the lack of better choice of words on top of my mouth right now.

anonymous_i··on H-1B visa: Government says work ban for H-4 spouses coming this month
> The students who come to US for MS spend 2 years of their studies. They are not going to magically follow American culture all of a sudden. If one goes to any Hindu temple in US, you will find a huge number of these students.

Nope they do. No Indian kid ever worked in a petty job(at least ones that I know of) until they started at a US university. That teaches a lot about value of work and value of people. They get weaved inside the fabric of Murrican society.

> Another thing is H4 is not something unique to the Infosys crowd. The Infosys crowd usually gets sent back to India once their deputation is over, they don't even get a chance to apply for h4.

I am not pointing out Infosys alone. I am using Inofsys to exemplify the likes of it. So, does the crowd really go back once the tenure is over ? Not really. Every one I knew, once they landed here jumped to a different employer and became a contractor for them. Thanks to H1B. Their H4 spouses got a free ticket to live with them. I am not saying its wrong. I am saying H4 spouses are disproportionately at advantage over other immigrant groups in gaining employment.

> The reality is these US students are one of the biggest groups who flock to the consultancies. They are desperate to get a h1b before their time runs out, so they settle for anything they get, which means usually a level 1 salary. Some also resort to scams such as faking experiences in their resume, paying consultancies money in return for keeping them in status and so on.

True. Thats what I said. If we do not curb H4 based immigration, this is only going to increase.

anonymous_i··on H-1B visa: Government says work ban for H-4 spouses coming this month
> Kids don't want to come to the United States to do their Masters because, job market is tight. US has lowest unemployment in decades. The tightness is on employers.

Sorry, I think , you misread my comment or rather may be I wasnt clear enough.

I meant kids don't want to come , if the job market is tight.

anonymous_i··on H-1B visa: Government says work ban for H-4 spouses coming this month
I will throw a different perspective here on why tightening regulations on H-4 spouse work is important:

- Fact is everyone comes to the US to have a better economic life.

- Even asylum seekers, would want to move to the US over any other progressive European nation , because, American Dream, easy upwards mobility, diversity. This is a personal observation.

Let me shed some light on how it works for Indian people. You can extrapolate it to other entities too.

  - Indian girls in general conveniently marry a US living
husband of their parents choice(not all but many), and
compete for the same jobs with kids who finished their
    Masters Degrees here.

  - H-1B visa system is fucked up. Infosys and Wipro and
TCS ship tons of their employees to the US.These people
work at a price less than the current market price.
- This is bad for three reasons:

   - Kids don't want to come to the United States to do their Masters because, job market
is tight. Its bad for schools and kids too. Schools for those foreign dollars, for kids- its important to have
an exposure to outside world - this helps shape world view in a tremendously good way.

   - These people are employed mostly to replace existing American workers.

   - From my observations, the reason I am biased in favouring kids coming here for
Masters is because, with in the time it takes to finish their education, and the
time it takes to find a job, they imbibe American culture. This may sound silly, but
it is very important. These people at some time will become citizens and will become
     part of national discourse.

  - Contractors shipped by Infosys and Wipro and TCS could never be part of that. It is
hardly possible. Again , its a personal observation.
- So , how do all these things tie together

   - Someone who finishes his Masters in the United States is expected to find a job with in three months of his
     OPT(Optional Practical Training) start date.

   - Now these people are mostly by themselves and invested heavily for their education. No reason why these people
     flock to so called 'consultancies'.

   - Compare that to the spouses of existing H-1B visa holders, who never invested anything here. No cultural
investment, nor education. They have a security to live here for as long as their relatively smart husband is
allowed to live. With unlimited amount of time compared to some one with a Masters degree, they are at a
     disproportionate advantage.

   - People finishing Masters should be given precedence over H4 spouses and H-1B's(for reasons above) hired by
     outsourcing companies.

   - There is more to it than we know. For all the xenophobia, this administration is displaying there are times,
     they are not wrong.
anonymous_i··on Why India's rich don't give their money away
Err!! You are not right. Here's why.

If you think there is a cultural reason for people acting the way they are acting- i.e., not being generous.

There is also something called Dana- Donation or Generosity. Dana is one of the biggest virtues in Hinduism. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C4%81na

India as a society is split into microscopic tribes. Its hard to identify a common fabric that underlies the system and everyone ascribes value to it. There's nothing like it. Why? I do not know.

anonymous_i··on Why India's rich don't give their money away
> incredible amount of systemic corruption in India.

You do not know , where it is going. You just can't control it. There is a lack of accountability.

anonymous_i··on Why India's rich don't give their money away
I will give you my interpretation:

- There is an incredible amount of systemic corruption in India. This means there are people- a lot of them, who are rich not by the value creation or inheritance.

- A measure of wealth in India is land ownership, not swathes of hundreds of acres of land like Bezos, but owning a 200 Sq.Ft. land or some real estate property in cities. A flat in a decent city like Bangalore or Hyderabad goes upwards of million dollars.

- Binami. These are aliases of rich politicians mostly their family members control hordes of wealth.

When these people start to give away, it actually generates negative social capital. They face a backlash from the same people they are donating to because, they cannot donate enough. The reason why recipients are insatiable is because, they view the wealth accumulated by these people is thru' non-legit means.

- We are seeing a new generation of multi-millionaires in this country. Seeing what they saw I don't think they will be inspired to donate. If they set up an organisation be it a private charity, there is a good chance they will have to deal with misappropriation of funds in their own organisation.

- Add caste based and religion based inconveniences you may cause to general public with your charitable work, unbeknownst to you.

anonymous_i··on Cruel and Unusual Punishment
She said:

The question is whether we condition our consumption of what artists produce on their moral purity.
Here she answers it

I want the stuff, and in truth I wouldn’t be all that bothered if the director were an axe murderer.
For me things are not black and white like that. Art is a form of expression -that's my opinion. My assumption is that, artist's create art from out of their own convictions. With that mindset , if I find out that artist is a heinous person it automatically makes me think same about his art- may be that's a wrong way to think about it.

If Sorkin wrote a play and a would be serial killer was cast as the protagonist , I will have a hard time liking the play when the actualities play out. This is probably wrong and contradicts what i wrote before because i am attributing the integrity of the play with one single actors behavior.

Its not easy. Does some one have a better way to deal with this.

anonymous_i··on Ask HN: What kind of revenue alternatives to advertising can websites employ?
Non-obtrusive advertisements. Theoutline.com has amazing ads. Its a marriage between native ads. and snap chat style cards.

Don't track the users and advertise the companies you like.Say, if I have a website, I will advertise Patagonia-because I like them, in a non-obtrusive manner. Again , this assumes that most of my readers are in a $x income bracket and are out-door loving techies.

This is coming from a tech loving-i think great products also should have great interfaces, but not a programmer person.
