anonygler··on mRNA vaccine-induced antibodies more effective than natural immunity vs. Covid
What wasn't there to know? Locking back down after vaccine availability was moving the goalposts. Hospitals weren't even overwhelmed at the time.

The EUA was approved because vaccine efficacy had been clearly demonstrated.

anonygler··on mRNA vaccine-induced antibodies more effective than natural immunity vs. Covid
Which makes the lockdown/mandates even more damning to me. Back when the vaccines were available, California removed the mask mandate and then quickly put it back in place. It seems quite obvious (even at the time) that they should've fully opened and allowed people to take advantage of the strong immunity vaccination provided heading into a summer of mild transmission. People would've received both benefits: strong short term immunity and a natural boost from casual transmission.
anonygler··on mRNA vaccine-induced antibodies more effective than natural immunity vs. Covid
Worth noting that plenty of studies demonstrate the exact opposite: Natural Immunity is superior and durable. Vaccine effectiveness largely wanes after 4-5 months. Even the CDC has acknowledged this.

anonygler··on How the CDC Abandoned Science
Vinay Prasad has been a beacon of rationality in the tribal quagmire that is COVID discourse.
anonygler··on Facebook staff now to be known as “Metamates”
You can't stop me from calling them Fookers.
anonygler··on Facebook removes 'Convoy to DC 2022' group
Except a lot of conspiracy theories aren’t conspiracies any more. The vaccine is not 100% effective? Vaccinated can spread Covid? The virus is endemic and 90%+ vaxx rate won’t change that?

All misinformation a year ago and reality today.

But that’s besides the point. After they started deplatforming right wingers, they quickly started targeting socialists too.

Going after the hard right makes building the infra to silence people palatable. Then they get everyone else they didn’t like.

anonygler··on Facebook removes 'Convoy to DC 2022' group
With Covid we’ve witnessed the neoliberal dystopia blossom. Government and big tech is fully united, with any mild free speech aspirations beaten out via threats of regulation.

Attempts to silence Joe Rogan is just another nail in that coffin. They can’t control what he says, so they need to stop him from saying it at all costs. Ideally before the next election.

Everything liberals don’t like is “literally fascism” and people who disagree with them are “actual nazis.” And this is regarded as Very Serious Discourse among the self proclaimed highly intelligent.

anonygler··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
Strong disagree. I've made it my policy to never work with a recruiter that isn't affiliated with the company they're hiring for. Recruiting farms like Cyber Recruiters (yuck) will do everything in their power to waste your time out of sheer incompetence and disinterest.

I've "doubled" my salary plenty of times through this policy.

But the real secret sauce is referrals. Companies always prioritize a strong referral, ignoring mediocre interview performance, and will even skip the reference checks so I don't have to bug my network.

anonygler··on The Folly of Pandemic Censorship
To quote another Substack author: If these people had been covering Robert McNamara we’d still be in Vietnam.

The idea that people are only allowed to consume approved ideas is deeply disturbing and authoritarian. If someone is publishing the wrong information, simply do fact checking. Censorship only serves to fuel greater mistrust of institutions.

When adolescents (or their parents) who legitimately get myocarditis from the vaccine are immediately deplatformed for "medical misinformation," a lot of parents are spooked into mistrust of everything they're told by authorities. The vaccine can simultaneously be both incredibly safe and carry some small risk, and people are allowed to be presented with this information and discuss it openly.

Tech platforms are not making the world a better place and the people who call for or support censorship are evil human beings.

anonygler··on Anti-work subreddit goes private after rough Fox News interview
In the past people would hold themselves to a high standard and celebrate triumph over adversity.

Today people are fetishizing this “neurodivergent” psychosis and it’s downright weird. This person could absolutely sit still if they every bothered to have priorities in their life.

I refuse to respect this weird trend.

anonygler··on Anti-work subreddit goes private after rough Fox News interview
It’s a zoom call. Autistic people are capable of basic discipline. They’re clearly not medically disabled.
anonygler··on Society has a trust problem. More censorship will only make it worse
That’s image search. Try searching for this company: https://fakemaskworldwide.com/all-products/

There’s others like it that are also censored. First result for “Fake face masks” on DuckDuckGo.

anonygler··on Anti-work subreddit goes private after rough Fox News interview
Oh my god stop that person from wobbling in their chair.
anonygler··on Society has a trust problem. More censorship will only make it worse
I was trying to find those “fake face masks” just so someone knew what I was talking about, and apparently they were all deplatformed from Google searches. I didn’t want to buy one, just reference it. But nada. Found it on DuckDuckGo and it’s now my default search engine.

It’s just so offensive they think they should control what I’m exposed to. Creepy and offensive. Google has lost its mission of making the worlds information accessible in a fresh, horrible way. Tragic.

anonygler··on Ketogenic Diets and Chronic Disease: Benefits vs. Risks
Rather dismissive. The Keto subreddit is overflowing with success stories, to the point that they’re spammy. Keto is a resounding weight loss success.
anonygler··on Transgender Individuals Twice as Likely to Die Early as General Population
The idea that you need to mutilate and medicate away your dysphoria will hopefully be regarded the same way we look at 20th century lobotomies. Your body cannot be engineered into the opposite sex.
anonygler··on Tell HN: Stop Accepting Shitty Interviews
How else do they decide? They’re doing a behavioral round, system design, manager interview, etc. But being able to implement, traverse, and analyze complex data structures and apply them to a problem is essential.

There’s a class of delusional people who think a GitHub profile is sufficient. Outside of a minority of technical influencers that is absolutely wrong and unreasonable.

anonygler··on Tell HN: Stop Accepting Shitty Interviews
Better advice: Leetcode is easy as shit. Suck up your pride and be good at it. You’ll rake in money getting companies to fight over you. I had a $670k offer that’s appreciated to $1m/yr. The company I joined didn’t ask LC, but it still mentally prepared me for the questions I got.
anonygler··on Ask HN: My coworker doesn't work. Does it make sense for me to say anything?
I'd set up a 1:1 to discuss strategies for falling through the cracks yourself.

I had a co-worker at Google who would go fishing in the middle of the day, and that was before the pandemic. Sweet gig.

anonygler··on The tragedy of climate change science
Did they really just reference COVID-19 as a model for climate scientists to follow? Yet another “crazy” conspiracy theory that’s going to go mainstream.
anonygler··on Belgian scientific base in Antarctica engulfed by Covid despite strict measures
Unless you’re elderly or have health issues, Covid fatality rate was already very, very low. Therapeutics make that even better.
anonygler··on Belgian scientific base in Antarctica engulfed by Covid despite strict measures
With a minuscule fatality rate at this point, all these measures seem like a massive waste of energy and resources. Masks, vaccines, dividers, hand sanitizer… none of it actually stops transmission. Spare everyone from this godawful ceremony.
anonygler··on Meta aims for ‘deep compatibility’ with blockchain
Feels like people are just babbling nonsense at this point. What in the world does this sentence even mean?
anonygler··on San Francisco exodus isn’t over, according to new migration data
Conservatives are allowed to criticize things and they’re not automatically driven by some sort of *phobia.
anonygler··on San Francisco exodus isn’t over, according to new migration data
Box everyone who criticizes livability and safety issues of SF with 80’s era southern baptists? Nice one bro.
anonygler··on Why does the stock market look like this while the world is falling apart?
> "I own #Bitcoin because it's the one thing they can't manipulate or control."

And lo, the plot was lost.

anonygler··on Twitter will ban users that repeatedly claim vaccinated people can spread Covid
The silencing of speech during the pandemic has been absolutely chilling. Even if people are wrong, let them be wrong.
anonygler··on California is the only state to hide its spending – nearly $300B a year
Always brought up and a bit of a red herring. Averaged out, yes. But prop 13 gives older generations are far lower tax burden. If you’re a young home owner in California, it’s absolutely the highest tax burden in the country.
anonygler··on A Cure for Type 1 Diabetes?
I was under the impression that stem cell treatments don’t require immunosuppression. Really seems to limit the upside of this breakthrough treatment.
