So why did you post on hackernews in a way that would guarantee a flamewar and not just open an issue like a civilized person?

Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.

anon4··on Marvin Minsky: What makes mathematics hard to learn? (2008)
Remembering the multiplication table up to 12 seems to be an American thing. We only did up to 9 and from then on learned how to multiply many-digit numbers going digit by digit.
anon4··on Marvin Minsky: What makes mathematics hard to learn? (2008)
Two-column proofs

I had never heard of that monstrosity before and having googled it, it looks worse than programming in COBOL.

I'm not sure how you would define the Fourier Transform geometrically without needing 4 spatial dimensions, at which point intuitive geometric reasoning is impossible.

Oh, it won't be a black market. There will be lobbying and laws will be passed authorising the preservation, transport and sale of war casualties from "rogue states".

That's weird. I have dry earwax and my brother has the wet variety.

Bulgaria, too. I suspect that's the generic name they use in a lot of countries.

In their defence, they are meant for cleaning your ears, just not your ear canal.

anon4··on A Former Dentist Uncovering Sugar's Rotten Secrets
Yeah, the language mix-up is making it hard to tell people. We "know" that the brain eats sugar and that sugar is a simple form of energy. Unfortunately this applies to glucose specifically, not to any sugar-class molecule and not to the white crystalline powder called table sugar. Glucose is ok for you. Practically every tissue in your body can use it right away. Fructose is, as you said, metabolised in the liver, and is practically toxic. Table sugar and HFCS are both 50-50 fructose-glucose and biologically equivalent.

Really? I found https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-... and others complaining about etilqs files and being told they're created by sqlite. It's probably a failure of the software using sqlite if these files persist to the point they become a problem.

It's like if you slip on a magazine someone left on the ground and ask the photographer of the cover photo for recompense for your bruises.

It's not realtime, though. You send your message and the other person gets it... in a few minutes.
anon4··on All Hollowed Out: The lonely poverty of America’s white working class
Well, of course inequality itself is not the problem. If a loaf of bread costs 0.20$ and rent is 50$/month, while keeping all salaries at their current level. However, inequality has a definite effect on economics and prices, so we can deduce that if the ratio of the two salaries were greater than it already is, while the job remains the exact same, then his mother would be in a worse position.

anon4··on Why you cannot have C++ exceptions with a stack trace
This sort of thing drives me crazy sometimes. Why can't we have a high level assembly language which can represent the code that's executing. Right now I have the choice of either looking at the code, which can be wrong, or looking at assembly, which is hard to associate with the code. Why can't I look at annotated assembly which tells me exactly which part of the code it corresponds to?

anon4··on Voxel Quest January 2016 Update
Skyrim and Fallout 3 and 4 are basically somewhat directed sandbox games. There is a main questline you can follow, but most players just immediately take off to go exploring that cool thing in the distance. Then die because the mobs are too high level :) . And that gives you incentive to level up, which frames your interaction with the world.
anon4··on Voxel Quest January 2016 Update
That used to be true, but right now you not only can, but have to control every pixel. The fixed pipeline is dead, now you have to write your own shaders and those can do literally anything. Or use CUDA/OpenCL for even more power.

Germans eat steak with jam on the side. I wouldn't look to them for being the measure of European cuisine. They make a mean wurst though.
anon4··on Why the ‘wet tea leaves’ drug raid was outrageous
> They want to make 4/20 an annual drug raid event.

So just make it like Halloween. Have the kids dress in police uniforms and go door to door with the actual officers searching every single house in the county. Have the adults give out marijuana-shaped candy. Say "pot or arrest" as you knock on the house. Have a competition at the end and declare the kid with the weightiest bag of "pot" the winner and give him/her a medal. Go all the way. It's good publicity you're after, not actual police work, after all.

anon4··on Nvidia GPUs can break Chrome's incognito mode
Not always. I was trying to write an android application to serve as a frontend to a site by launching a background webview, drawing the elements I'm interested to a canvas and sending the pixels back to the application. (Un)fortunately, after you draw an HTML DOM element to a canvas, you're forbidden from reading the canvas pixels back and there's no flags you can set on the webview to let you do it.
