ano-ther··on Gravity Could Be Proof We're Living in a Computer Simulation
Can’t judge the content but this is the second time today that I come across the mass–energy–information equivalence. First time: http://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/cup
ano-ther··on A community-led fork of Organic Maps
What’s the backstory?

> There was no real progress in negotiations with Organic Maps shareholders.

> It appears that Viktor is only open to a guarantee not to sell the project, however besides that he wants to retain full control of Organic Maps.

> And Organic Maps future is uncertain still, as the disagreement between shareholders (Viktor and Roman) has not been resolved.

ano-ther··on The last masters of Afro-Colombian machete fencing
What are the rules? And how do they not end up hurting each other?
ano-ther··on The standing power throw is out as new Army fitness test goes 'sex-neutral'
Interesting that a US Army test use meter as the measure

ano-ther··on Mobygratis – Free Moby music to empower your creative projects
I don't care that the license is non-commercial.

The collection is great. It's like a much more polished and professional version of my ideas folder (I rarely get beyond the initial loop/riff stage). Will now download a random piece, pop it into my DAW and see if it can inspire me to create something new.

ano-ther··on Can rotation solve the Hubble Puzzle?
If the universe is a black hole, would we be able to see anything falling into it after it crosses the event horizon?
ano-ther··on Microsoft Recall on Copilot+ PC: testing the security and privacy implications
Good and thorough analysis. Seems like MS has improved Recall somewhat. But I am still puzzled about why anyone would want this.

By the way: why do browsers only allow deleting the most recent history, and not offer a possibility to delete "everything older than 30 days"?

ano-ther··on TikZJax: Embedding LaTeX Drawings in HTML
Takes a second or so to load on mine (iOS Safari). But then it shows correctly, even if the second diagram is a bit small (it fits in a quarter of the 1in circle).
ano-ther··on Passing planes and other whoosh sounds
Very interesting question. I thought that was when they extend their flaps so the wings become a bit wider for the slower flight and that creates some resonance.
ano-ther··on Chroma: Ubisoft's internal tool used to simulate color-blindness
Does anyone know a tool that assessed which type of colorblindness you have? The tool here seems great, but when I want to explain to people how I see colors, I don’t know which deficiency to choose.
ano-ther··on "We have no bros and no oligarchs"
The administration between 2020 and 2024 seems to have had some success in raising spending on new manufacturing.

ano-ther··on Guitar modeling companies are recreating rare vintage sounds for the digital age
Not only can you get all the sounds in the world, it’s also much more neighbor- and recording-friendly.

But I should get that ancient Fender Princeton Reverb out of the basement to feel the wind in my hair again (and the ringing in my ears).

ano-ther··on Why Tap a Wheel of Cheese?
Ultrasound seems to be viable

> A study on structural quality control of Swiss‐type cheese with ultrasound is presented. We used a longitudinal mode pulse‐echo setup using 1–2MHz ultrasonic frequencies to detect cheese‐eyes and ripening induced cracks. Results show that the ultrasonic method posses good potential to monitor the cheese structure during the ripening process. Preliminary results indicate that maturation stage could be monitored with ultrasonic velocity measurements.

ano-ther··on The narrowest escalator in New York City
Faster indeed

> A trial in which Holborn's escalators became standing-only improved the speed customers got through the station, Transport for London (TfL) has found.

ano-ther··on CONCEPT1 – Rideable Kawasaki Robotic Horse
Looks impressive and probably pretty fun. The soundtrack seems a little optimistic as you don’t hear a single electric motor whirring.
ano-ther··on Show HN: iPhone 2005 weird "Blob Keyboard" simulator
Cool. And nicely implemented.

Having texted with T9 this didn’t feel too alien. Just the accept button slowing me down.

ano-ther··on Microsoft is redesigning the Windows BSOD and it might change to black
On current computers the screen whizzes past so fast that it is almost impossible to read and remember the error code. The new design doesn’t really help with that.

And the QR code points to a general BSOD page instead of the error, which could be improved.

Unfortunately, I notice these too often because Windows 11 produces a lot more BSODs for me than Win10.

ano-ther··on Why does US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have a Russian email address?
https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1905176792337461363.html

> UPDATE: The information above was fetched from some of the public leak databases going around internet. This particular leak is from 2016, so the account was created before that. The password used was consistent with other similar accounts allegedly linked to Hegseth.

> @realTimaV was able to create a new account with the username phegseth@mail.ru, which indicates that, 1) the account was deleted by the owner or scrapped by the service 2) the data itself is garbage, red herring, and it was added there by someone as a decoy

ano-ther··on AMC Theatres will screen a Swedish movie 'visually dubbed' with the help of AI
I found Swedish quite easy to understand, eg in this classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw4ylHuBOVk&pp=0gcJCdgAo7VqN...
ano-ther··on The Great Barefoot Running Hysteria of 2010
I got mine around 2012 (but not the toe version) and quickly found out that running in them for more than 15 minutes makes my feet hurt, with no sign of a training effect.

But they still serve me well as gym shoes with a very low packing volume (great for business trips).

ano-ther··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
Oh yes. Got an e-bike with a Bosch controller. Have to click away the app advertisement every time before I can use the bike. And the app requires registration. I have the strong suspicion that as soon as I do that, the bike will only work with my phone and start locking out my family members from using it.
ano-ther··on The persistent mischaracterization of Google and Facebook A/B tests
The issue seems to be that the platforms optimize before showing — presumably because they get paid for click-throughs.

Couldn’t they offer an unbiased randomization option with a different payment model (eg based on showings, not clicks)? Would preserve their revenue and researchers get a good tool.

ano-ther··on Project Aardvark: reimagining AI weather prediction
Oh they absolutely do track their predictions and how the different models perform. That’s how they keep improving.

This is a lay-person overview which cites some of the in-depth studies: https://ourworldindata.org/weather-forecasts

ano-ther··on Framework Claims to Resolve Navier–Stokes, Riemann Hypothesis, and P vs. NP
That would be quite a breakthrough.

Is there more than the 4-page paper that’s on the page? It seems very scarce on details and proofs.

And can you actually patent an algorithm?

ano-ther··on Most Externalities Are Solved with Technology, Not Coordination
The list of counterexamples at the end is a little light.

The Montreal Protocol is probably the most famous example: https://www.unep.org/ozonaction/who-we-are/about-montreal-pr...

And the German feed-in-tariffs helped renewables quite a bit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feed-in_tariffs_in_Germany

Or the European emission standards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standards

They achieved their two goals of (1) minimizing the externality and (2) driving technology innovation.

ano-ther··on Grok 3: Critical Reassessment of the Anthropogenic Global Warming Hypothesis
Hm.

- Grok (X‘s AI) is first author of this paper.

- It is published in a journal which seems to be dedicated to questioning climate change https://scienceofclimatechange.org/articles/articles/

- Whose editor in chief has himself published questionable studies on climate change https://andthentheresphysics.wordpress.com/2017/10/03/a-hard...

ano-ther··on Man Convicted of Sabotaging His Employer's Computer Systems and Deleting Data
> The “kill switch” code — which Lu named “IsDLEnabledinAD”, abbreviating “Is Davis Lu enabled in Active Directory” — was automatically activated upon his termination

Is there a better way to create an oracle that doesn’t point back at you?

ano-ther··on Ask HN: Have you added a Pride flag in your logo?
Your company logo should stand for itself and not be cluttered with other logos. Over time, you fill it with meaning (your offerings, the quality of service, personality and so on). As a result, people start associating your logo with you and you are building a brand.

Once you start adding other logos, they will bring associations that you cannot control. This will dilute your brand.

Think about when you want to signal inclusiveness (eg, in employer branding) and highlight it there. Then it will become part of your general brand without the need to give up your distinct logo.
