ankimal··on Step by step from jQuery to Backbone
You can also very easily split your code into multiple files. That itself would give you more maintainability. A common breakdown is models, view, controllers and maybe some boilerplate app.js or app.coffee files.
ankimal··on Pinterest Architecture Update - 18M Visitors, 10x Growth, 12 Employees, 410 TB
Small, cohesive goal oriented teams with clear well defined goals can achieve so much.

ankimal··on HNSummaries.com - algorithmically summarized HN articles to your inbox
Just got my first newsletter. Looking good for an initial release. Some feedback:

Would love to get an index of headlines on top of the email with anchors to actual stories below.

Would love to see shorter summaries and maybe some of the top comments for each story (summarized, if possible).

ankimal··on Facebook: Legal action against employers asking for your password
Its an issue that can lead to a chain reaction. Facebook is protecting itself by protecting its users.

Employers make 'facebook background check' hiring policy -> FB users/prospective employees become more conscious of this -> User engagement drops as users are more careful about posting anything under the sun -> FB loses

ankimal··on Fight against Corruption in India using technology
Where is the social integration? Gotta have the usual tweet, like, reddit etc. to make this viral.
ankimal··on Daring Fireball: The iPhone 4S
I just hope it can handle accents or at least learn to handle them over time.
ankimal··on Steve Jobs has passed away.
RIP Steve Jobs, one of the greatest visionaries of our times.
ankimal··on India unveils world’s cheapest tablet computer for $35
But what do you do with a $35 tablet with WiFi when there is no electricity, let alone internet.

ankimal··on How Porsche hacked the financial system and made a killing (2009)
January 7, 2009 at 7:32 pm (Thats the date on the article). Cant blame him for not predicting the future.
ankimal··on How to Rock an Algorithms Interview
Sign up at topcoder.com (https://www.topcoder.com/reg/) and do a BFS (Breadth First Search) of their Algorithm (Single Round Matches) SRMs (http://apps.topcoder.com/wiki/display/tc/Algorithm+Overview).

ankimal··on I Broke Justin.tv
Things are not quite as wild-west at Justin.tv as they once were. We now have QA (Thanks B!), monitoring and deploy management.

I think most small teams start with minimal qa and testing (not the recommended approach) and thus things like this happen often. Rapid development becomes blitzkrieg.

ankimal··on Why I will never pursue cheating again
Thats why sorting and filtering by GPA is something I never believed in and hope other people stop doing as well. A good GPA is an indication of a capable candidate but the opposite may not be true.
ankimal··on Why I will never pursue cheating again
Its funny how almost all of this hard work put into cheating, copying, changing, editing etc. leads to one line on your resume, the GPA. A good GPA gets your resume short-listed at the very least but someone who never earned the GPA is extremely easy to catch in an interview, especially for CS majors. A little digging into that project you got an 'A' for and it all comes tumbling down like a house of cards. All it achieves in the end, is a waste of the interviewer or recruiter's time.
ankimal··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
...and that if I had any decent competitive options in the neighborhood I'd dump Comcast in a heartbeat. Since I don't .."

I think its important to note the lack of competition. I wonder what that cap and price would be if there were even one other provider in the same area?

ankimal··on “Let's settle this in a Ruby programming contest”
"TopCoder for real world problems"! Great idea. Hope a lot of open source stuff comes out of this or at the very least helps current projects.
ankimal··on I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer?
As long as you re learning, be it newer technologies, languages, frameworks, patterns or whatever it is that interests you most during work time, spare time, any time, you would always be a better developer today than you were yesterday.
ankimal··on Okay, Okay, Maybe Netflix Is a Problem for Cable After All
I have a smart Sony BD player that lets me watch Crackle, Hulu Plus, Netflix and half a dozen other things. It upgrades automatically and adds new services every few months. (I believe most of these are available on the PS3 as well). I was on this crazy cable plan that had all the bells and whistles but I actually only watched 5 channels. When cable lets me subscribe on a channel by channel basis I might switch back. The only thing I missed is live sports but networks are broadcasting live web streams as well, so 'cut the cord' = 'more money in my pocket'.

Also, something to note was that I dint have TiVo or DVR and so could almost never watch shows on TV. Hulu for me is free DVR (unless they dont have my show which is rare).

ankimal··on What agile means to me (and why it never really works)
"Measure as much as you can - no feedback == no direction"

Can't agree more. We have built some internal applications where everything was implemented, the acceptance criterias were met and everyone was satisfied until they actually started using the system and said, ".. wait a minute, this doesnt help us as much as we had liked". But, we had already moved on to the next big thing.

ankimal··on Apple Files Lawsuit Against White iPhone Kid
Come on.. cut the kid a break. If you wanna punish him, take his profits, put it in some kind of trust fund or education fund for him and win some PR points while you're at it.
ankimal··on Why should anyone ever use a Google API again?
Dint Fred Wilson say this at Disrupt NY last week: http://techcrunch.com/2011/05/23/fred-wilson-be-your-own-bit...

They should charge for it at the very least. Whats stopping anyone from using a proxy service and hitting their web page? I m sure people would rather pay a little than go through these unnecessarily complicated and unethical practices.

ankimal··on Coming soon: make your phone your wallet
Apple uses google maps on the iPhone, there is no reason why Apple couldnt do the same with wallet.
ankimal··on Google's Street View starts mapping India
Wait, I thought the tri-cycles were cycle rickshaws. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycle_rickshaw

Now those babies will get you through all the back-alleys and streets in no time. The only problem would be mounting their camera on it. I think they ve solved harder problems.

ankimal··on Google's Street View starts mapping India
Given the traffic snarls and developing infrastructure, I would love to know how many months or years it ll take them to get this done. My other concern is whether they ll be able to cope up with India's changing infrastructure. New bridges, buildings, housing complexes come up every year, traffic patterns change to accomodate the same and most big cities have a metro under construction. Changing maps is one thing, but re-mapping street view is quite another.
ankimal··on Facebook To Launch Music Service With Spotify
Spotify isnt available in the US. http://www.spotify.com/int/why-not-available/

So, the facebook integration is an add-on for users that already use/can use spotify?

ankimal··on Twitter acquires TweetDeck
What does this have to say about APIs and how much of your data you want to open up? Is twitter because of the eco-system it created through its open API? The more pessimistic argument would be that the openness has come back to bite it. How many more ghosts lurk in the closet?
ankimal··on Why is America the 'no-vacation nation'?
We have the Netflix policy, well almost. We get the time off when you want it, but never more than 5 working days together (Thats a week). Did I mention that a large number of the employees travel abroad to visit family?
ankimal··on Ramanujan's Notebooks
I wish the quality of documents was better. Really hard to read this.
ankimal··on Rails 3 - Fully Loaded
We used active_scaffold for an internal project. Its awesome to get a basic CRUD app going. https://github.com/vhochstein/active_scaffold
ankimal··on It doesn’t pay to be the computer guy
I think it totally depends on what kind of computer guy you are. A product company with a web/IT product is as good as its IT/dev team. In fact, most times business itself doesnt know what the next big thing should be.
