aniketpant··on Motorola's Moto G bites into UK budget smartphone market
I can provide some insight from the Indian market over here. I had been on the lookout for the launch of Moto G since Motorola announced it last year. Last month, I purchased the 16 GB model for INR 13,999 (USD 233 at the moment). The price is very convenient for anyone and there aren't any phones which match the hardware specifications of this one.

For those who are used to Motorola's customizations in their phone, you will be missing them because the phone is stock android. The update for KitKat is already out and many people I know have already updated their phones. Till now I have not noticed any issues with the phone and it works very well. I am sure Android developers can make good use of the phone.

aniketpant··on Tamil Nadu state departments asked to switch over to open source software
I think you should not club the two points together. Your first point makes a lot of sense because even if you say that the Indian government officials were "tad computer illiterate", LibreOffice is still not an acceptable replacement majorly due the UI and the loss of basic features.
aniketpant··on Sublime Text 3 Is Not Dead and Not Sold to GitHub
I never heard that news but I have a feeling that it sprouted from the Atom release announcement. It breaks my heart when I get to hear such rumors because most of these great software are backed well by the community but just because another software with similar functionality props up, people assume that one of them must have given up.

I am still using ST3 Beta unregistered because currently I do not have the money to afford it but I definitely will support it's development as it is the only text editor which suits me.

aniketpant··on Kickstarter passes $1B in pledges
That was simple one-page website with good transitions.
aniketpant··on Anybody else hating web fonts lately?
Hating is good. It allows you to think of improvements. But, hating without any solution is highly annoying.

I understand the fact that you prefer speed but just speed is not the only solution to effective web design. Typefaces play a very important role in the overall UX of any site.

aniketpant··on Ask HN: Have your parents done anything to make you interested in Science or IT?
My mother comes from a Biology background and my father is self-learnt in Computer Science. Today, I am in my final year of Engineering and all this has happened because I had a strong family background in Science where I learnt every single bit of Physics and Mathematics from my father and my mother taught me every other subject until college. My major motivation to code comes from my father because he was the one who taught me C++ when I was 13.

My interest has more to do with the effort my parents put into teaching me and providing me with resources to pursue what I liked.

Also, we own an assembled PC which has undergone numerous upgrades and is still with us for over 20 years.

aniketpant··on Public speaking is tough
Nobody mentioned Speak Up. It's a wonderful community of people where everyone helps each other out in planning and preparing for talks. It's been slightly inactive recently, but every mail gets an assured response.

Thanks for putting that down because I had that one in mind. Will avoid now.

aniketpant··on Show HN: My new project - ask.io
I choose to not sound cocky here. But, I have bookmarked it and I tend to bookmark stuff which I do go back to :)
aniketpant··on Show HN: My new project - ask.io
I agree with that. If all that happens, I would love to see the way the project grows. It will be like a nice /r/AskReddit thing with no BS.
aniketpant··on Show HN: My new project - ask.io
Interesting idea. I am pretty sure I might put up something up there someday.
aniketpant··on Riot.js – A 1kb client-side MVP framework
That's the same thing with Rails.

You don't follow a rule, it doesn't allow you to do it. You need to go by the book there, so why not here?

aniketpant··on Riot.js – A 1kb client-side MVP framework
@tipirai Could you please put up more posts on usage and the documentation?
aniketpant··on Riot.js – A 1kb client-side MVP framework
I really like this outlook.

Most developers don't bother about the presentation layer and they think that jQuery is a pain but most front-end designer and developers rely on it.

Great step.

aniketpant··on Flipkart Raises $160M From Dragoneer Investment, Morgan Stanley Investment
Flipkart definitely took the Indian market by storm. They offered Free Shipping for orders even less than INR 200, and that too with Cash on Delivery. That was rad. But, it was very much expected to go soon because a company can't sustain that way.

Personally, I feel that the Indian customers expect a lot of free stuff which is sort of ridiculous. I mean you have a number of book stores, showrooms selling clothes, computers and loads of other things just next to your house, yet you wait for an order which might arrive after a week. It makes sense if you want to buy a coffee maker because that will come with free shipping and a reduced price, but please don't expect the same for small items.

What interests me more is the fact that Flipkart is already close to Amazon's marketplace at the moment and I am sure that it will continue to grow in that direction. What if Amazon acquires Flipkart at some point of time?

aniketpant··on Ask HN: Themeforest let another author steal my design. Any advice?
First I was under the impression that I will see a clone but to be frank it doesn't look like an almost copy.

The only similarity I see in both the designs is the layout. Other than that, there are so many differences even in the subtleties.

You might want to report it to them but I am not sure if any action will be taken because they can't be distinguished very clearly.

aniketpant··on Ask HN: Would you pay for someone to answer your StackOverflow question?
StackOverflow is one of the most helpful community I have come across the Internet and I am an active user. I ask questions at times and try to answer whatever I can. Most of my doubts are answered on SO because someone might have already hit that bump before.

When I answer questions on SO, I never think about earning via my answer because it doesn't make sense. Most people answer on the website for the simple reason of helping someone out. If I don't answer thinking that I won't get anything out of it, then someone else will answer for sure.

I feel that monetizing a part of SO will take away a lot of fun for people like me.

aniketpant··on A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
Being a front-end developer myself, I find such an idea a complete waste for people like me. We have put in a lot our time understanding how JS functions and most of the interactive interfaces you come across use jQuery. If Brython were to become a standard, then would you be writing a new JS library that would allow me work with DOM faster and in a better fashion?
aniketpant··on A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
I don't get the point why should I use Python to run Javascript.

JS has been in use around the web for a long time now and I don't see the need why should I go about using Python for the very same? Doesn't one language has a purpose of it's own?

If it wasn't the case, then people would have worked on creating a unified language for all our needs.

aniketpant··on Show HN: WideArea – an expandable textarea
Was this inspired by GitHub's new distraction-free comment feature? The styling looks exactly the same.
aniketpant··on Show HN: HNsearch, a ruby gem for searching HN via command-line
I was learning to write RubyGems and this is what I came up with. I know that it doesn't follow the usual convention of lowercase naming but this is what I started with and then I ended up deploying it.

The gem doesn't do a lot other than query the HNsearch.com API and then just pretty prints the results. I am working on making it better and will be introducing some more commands.

I would like to get some review on my code quality and also how can I make this gem better.

I even wrote a small post on the same - http://aniketpant.com/2013/05/hnsearch-my-first-gem/

aniketpant··on Ask HN: Would you hire me?
I am very much like you except all the experience you have had in the real world.

I just completed my third year of studying Mechanical Engineering at BITS Pilani, India. In my last three years in college, I have worked with some small clients. I also got the opportunity to work with two organizations during the summer of 2011 and 2012. Currently, I am learning Ruby and working on small projects of my own. If you end up with a job in the tech sector soon, do let me know how you got it. I am sure it will be a good experience for me to learn from someone who went on a path that I am about to take.

aniketpant··on Chart.js is back online
Really happy that Chart.js is back because if it didn't come back, I would have been able to use only xCharts (http://tenxer.github.com/xcharts) which I find less versatile.

Apart from this, I don't get the comments at the top! Is this what HN users think of open source projects which spring up from time to time! If a project is taken down due to IP rights and then comes back to life after a day, is that all a marketing campaign? Don't you think of it as an accomplishment for the community? And this is not the first time that HN users just go about destroying someone's project in a second. Shouldn't we help in giving the person a direction and helping him out.

aniketpant··on Fixing the computer guy posture [pdf]
I agree man.

We can't really make this world a great place if we don't live long. So, lets stand up.

aniketpant··on Fixing the computer guy posture [pdf]
Nothing like this has happened to me so far. But I am going to be watching for signs all the time.

Is going for a stand-up desk worth it? I have heard that they really improve your working.

aniketpant··on Ask HN: Would anyone be interested in using a new Codeigniter Admin Type Module?
Tank_Auth was my first go actually, but then SimpleLoginSecure had all these premade functions which were easy to use and configure. And it had bcrypt too. It's quite awesome, but I plan to rewrite the library for the project.
aniketpant··on Show HN: A personal Gmail
Yes. I would surely love to use this as an email client if it works well with my Google Apps account.

And I would definitely be willing to pay a nominal amount for a year long license or a lifetime license.

What I like about your app -

* UI

* Well thought-out panels

* Utilization of white space

What you can possibly work on -

This is one feature that is not there on GMail and I really really crave for it. Sometime I feel the need to create a note for myself for a specific email I have received. But I can't do that. It would be a great addition to the Mail App.

aniketpant··on Codeacademy for competent programmers?
This is one of the worst kind of questions one can come up with.

It's absolutely impossible to turn an average coder into a great coder. Because the things about code you mention in the question -

1. Beautiful 2. Modular 3. Modular 4. Maintainable

All of the four things above do not come by direct learning. They come with experience and a lot of practice.

I agree with the fact that you can make a platform to provide the user with questions that will challenge him but still there will be a part where you will give him some hints. And that will just spoil the entire working.

aniketpant··on The Next Microsoft
I went through more or less all of the comments out here and many of them say that the effort is great but it's not implementable.

I really don't understand what makes you say that, many of the people have given out points like: * typefaces suck * 'moonshot' ain't nice * the slate doesn't mean much

To be frank I am quite amazed by the point I put above. I have been following minimallyminimal's blog for quite some time now and his work is really amazing. And specifically this rebranding effort carries a lot of meaning and shows the dedication he put in. He has taken so many cases to showcase the usage of the 'slate' logo.

As for me, I love the slate logo a lot. He is able to make different combinations by transforming the original base unit and created logos for other products. I feel that it adds more value to the logo because of it's flexibility and fluidity. The old logo couldn't be transformed in any manner to generate logos of their other products.

--

And the worst part of all this discussion here is that it went astray at so many places. But, if Microsoft had this logo in the Windows 7 products, no one would have said a thing then. We just accept what the company is offering. When someone put in his time in doing a rebranding, I guess we better appreciate it and put in relevant points. Pouring in crap like 'the design is poor' doesn't do any good to anyone.
