angrow··on Appl Still Hasn’t Fixd Its MacBook Kyboad Problm
What current laptops have good keyboards?
angrow··on Mysterious “hair ice” is formed by fungus (2015)

angrow··on Google X Executive Accused of Sexual Harassment Still Works There, Employees Say
Sadly often it's sympathy.
angrow··on Some private equity firms are furious over a paper in a dermatology journal
No need to turn to his associations for evidence, you're free to read his work and judge for yourself.
angrow··on First analysis of ‘pre-registered’ studies shows sharp rise in null findings
I find it helpful, or at least informative, but since it confirms the model I already had of the field my opinion may not be trustworthy.
angrow··on San Francisco YC donation to defeat homeless prevention measure
Sure, they don't hate the idea of helping houseless people, they just hate the idea of that help being legally prioritized over their RoI.
angrow··on The indefatigable efforts of J. M. Keynes
No, but there are plenty whose politics are obfustacted enough that you could confuse it for steely-eyed objectivity.
angrow··on Myst at 25: How it changed gaming, created addicts, and made enemies
The Witness is a fantastic game, and while all the puzzles are drawing a line on a screen, without getting into spoilers, they have a great deal more variety than you might think.

That said, unlike the magical-realism of Myst and Riven's lived-in locations, the island of The Witness is impressionistic: It's not supposed to feel like a real place, only a kind of 3-d painting filled with relaxing and thought-provoking details, and coincidences to notice. So it might not be your cup of tea.

angrow··on Fridge 0.1
FTA:

> (Numbers in this graph are running higher than the actual temps of food in the fridge, for reasons explained in the scuttlebutt thread.)

angrow··on U Can't Talk to Ur Professor Like This
I went to a (very small, very odd) college which took the other route: all participants in the class - teachers and students - addressed each other as Mr. or Ms. <family name>.
angrow··on Show HN: Git-dit – a distributed issue tracker for git
Or you could just treat issues as another kind of patch, which anyone could send by email or pull request, and maintainers could accept, reject, modify, clarify, etc.

It's true this would be harder for less technical users to submit problems. You might want a way to map anything submitted by Github Issues or the like into patches, though you could also do it manually.

angrow··on 8,760 Hours: How to get the most out of next year
I use it too, and it's been shockingly effective for something so simple. I find the prompt to _think_ about what I _really_ want to do incredibly inspiring

It's also inspiring in another way, as a solopreneur-hacker-bootstrap success story: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11999757

angrow··on General questions about the Airbnb Community Commitment
What makes you think this would be against the agreement? Is crust a religion? An disability? "Dirty" isn't a protected class.

I've personally experienced that some hosts refuse to rent to unmarried couples. It was inconvenient and silly, but perfectly legal and nearly harmless (unless their actual problem was that only one of us was white, but who can say).

angrow··on Giving $1k to Someone in Extreme Poverty
The legal requirement for an organization to receive tax-free nonprofit status in the US is that at least 5% of funds be spent to serve the stated mission. The bar is low everywhere.
angrow··on Erlang Installer Beta: A Better Way To Use Erlang On OS X
It's good to see language communities/committees taking steps to improve UX.

That said, since we're all using this to announce our idiosyncratic package managers, I use Nix.

angrow··on What I learned as a hired consultant to autodidact physicists
If we need a more neutral term than "crank", rather than "autodidact," why not "outsider"?

An outsider artist is anyone who creates art not easily dismissed, despite not participating in the social and academic communities of their medium, so why can't there be outsider scientists and engineers as well?

angrow··on Video of Valley Mogul Kicking His Girlfriend 117 Times Could Send Him to Jail
Another commenter claims Chahal has secured the services of a PR firm which specializes in taking down stories like this, to keep then from spreading. Maybe it works sometimes.
angrow··on Frequent Password Changes Is a Bad Security Idea
I have worked at a US DoD "secure facility". You can imagine the requirements they imposed on password length, characters, frequency of changing, uniqueness, etc. Perhaps you can also imagine that nearly everyone kept their current password written on a sticky-note somewhere in their desk.
angrow··on How to Save a City Through a Website
She isn't talking about your company, so there's no need to leap to its defense.
angrow··on Find a new city
We can clearly see that's your point, but it's a mystery to me why you think your experience outweighs that of the parent (though the nonsequitor about immigrants offers a depressing clue).
angrow··on No Man's Sky sued over procedural generation algorithm patent
The purpose of copyright and patent laws is to give the greatest benefit to society (in the American constitution, the phrasing is "to promote the useful arts and sciences"). The granting of temporary monopolies to registrants is a common tactic used to achieve that end, but not the only possible one, and one that admits of many variations (terms, extensions, and limitations vary across jurisdictions and over time).

Maybe some people think that the exact laws we have right now are the best possible at serving the underlying purpose of the long-term enrichment of the public domain, but many seem to think that improvements could be made.

angrow··on On Being a Black Man
I've had the same experience, and enjoyed it the same way.

It's because, as a white person raised in a white-supremacist society, experience has not conditioned me to see attention as dangerous.

angrow··on The takeover: how police ended up running a paedophile site
Unlike drugs, the products in question here are in themselves evidence of crimes (the acts you mention). Is it really a knee-jerk reaction that selling or "hoarding" such evidence would itself be prosecutable?
angrow··on The Most Common Reason Users Cancel a Streaming Service? Advertisements
Could you name any? My girlfriend has been worried we won't be able to stream anything when we move to Germany.
angrow··on Introducing Soylent 1.6 Powder
Its ingredient list is public, and does not include creatine or anything in which creatine naturally occurs.

Luckily, creatine is cheap and mixes easily in a shake, or even just in water.

angrow··on Member of The European Union
Which did you think it was (misguided or untrue) and why?
angrow··on Test Driving New York City's New Micro Apartments
Would you like it less if you were paid more?
angrow··on Why I'm taking a long startup investing vacation

angrow··on Growing Rift Between Valve and Oculus
I remember people having nearly-identical debates about the motion controlled "party games" of the Wii.
angrow··on Please don’t organize ‘fun’ activities at hackathons
What's wrong, exactly, with people saying something is bad and shouldn't be done, when they think it is bad and shouldn't be done?
