angio··on The US government is buying troves of data about Americans
The difference is that they can't legally collect data _on americans_, so they need to outsource it to private companies. Non americans have no rights so they can just spy on them (through the cloud act for example).
angio··on How is Apache APISIX Fast?
In my experience it's much easier to configure and deploy.
angio··on Nix/NixOS S3 Update and Recap of Community Call
I'm surprised replit is not helping out financially considering they now use nix to power their repls.
angio··on Who wants to be tracked?
Sometimes I wish GDPR included a clause stating that presence of the Do-Not-Track header equals to the user not giving consent.
angio··on Google Bard blocks all European Union countries
ChatGPT is back in Italy after they updated their privacy policy and added/changed a few options.
angio··on Please don’t upload my code on GitHub
Yes, that's why any serious effort in producing software compatible with GPL-ed software requires the team writing code not to look at the original code at all. Usually a person (or small team) reads the original software and produces a spec, then another team implements the spec. This reduces the chance of accidentally copying GPL-ed code.
angio··on The 'Insanely Broad' Restrict Act Could Ban Much More Than Just TikTok
You're thinking short term. If the US bans tiktok, more countries will follow and american tech companies will have a hard time competing there. On these grounds chinese companies will be able to compete better because they're already used to running multiple versions of the same app targeted at different markets.
angio··on The 'Insanely Broad' Restrict Act Could Ban Much More Than Just TikTok
Why would they when it validates their internet strategy? It just shows the CCP was 10 years ahead of the US when it comes to restricting what apps citizens can use (to "protect" them ofcourse).
angio··on The 'Insanely Broad' Restrict Act Could Ban Much More Than Just TikTok
Are you saying Joseph Cox from Vice has been paid to be critical of the act? EFF and ACLU also came out against this, have they been paid too?
angio··on Cargo theft, led by food and beverage, is surging across the U.S.
If the retailer keeps a record of the receipts, the government can ask for them since they have the payment reference from the credit card company.
angio··on TikTok Congress Hearing
In that case they would be banned under the new law, the same way any other company would.
angio··on Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know
Would it be possible to build something on top of DHT+Torrent? Main issue seems around image discovery.
angio··on Launch HN: Moonrepo (YC W23) – Open-source build system
I'm a big fan of using nix to achieve that. https://determinate.systems/posts/nix-github-actions
angio··on Rejected emoji proposals
I noticed proposals use google/bing search results (in english) to show support for an emoji. If they used multiple languages to show popularity (at least english, spanish, french, and mandarin) it would look different.

In general emoji are very us-centric, for example the police car emoji doesn't look like a police car to many cultures.

angio··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
They use a blockchain to transact in USDC because it's more convenient that posting cash across borders. Freelancers usually don't have the financial means to open offshore companies.
angio··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
They use it for USDC, which is much better than buying dollars on the black market.
angio··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
Compare how many teams in crypto come from argentina (and latam in general) and south east asia compared to e.g. fintech or ai. In my experience many started by accepting remote jobs paid in crypto and then later working full time in the field.
angio··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
You can do the same with cash, why not extend that to digital money? After receiving a cyrpto paying you can declare it to the goverment if it goes above the minimum required by law (exactly as with cash). It would be ridiculous if you had to KYC for a 200$ cash payment.
angio··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
Just out of curiosity, which country are you based in? Because for people based in countries with high inflation, crypto is a great tool to get paid in usd and reinvest it without being forced by their governement to convert it into their currency. Obviously, if you're based in a country with a strong currency and where all financial intstruments are available, that's not important.
angio··on Tether ownership and company weaknesses revealed in documents
You can short on ethereum (with a payout in usdc) and you will be 100% paid out.
angio··on Release engineering is exhausting so here's cargo-dist
If you're using nix to build your repo, it's worth adding scripts for releases etc and run them locally and as part of the ci https://determinate.systems/posts/nix-github-actions
angio··on Show HN: We built a developer-first open-source Zapier alternative
You have to account that not everyone is working in the US. For someone earning 15k$ per year, 600$ is not little money.
angio··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
My ISP is not in the US though :)
angio··on An investigation into Apple’s new Relay network
Are these two companies based in two different jurisdictions? In other words, is the non-apple company US-based or not?
angio··on “Expect tests” make test-writing feel like a REPL session
You're supposed to use it as a repl, so you start with a test for `fib(1) = 1`, then `fib(2)` and so on. Once you're confident of your implementation, you use quickcheck to test general properties of the system.

Similarly if you find a bug in the live system, you add a test for that and the initial output will be wrong. Then you fix your code until it prints the correct value and commit that so any regression will be caught.

angio··on “Expect tests” make test-writing feel like a REPL session
It's a repl, so you build the final output incrementally. Testing becomes part of the development workflow like you would do in languages that rely on the repl like lisps.

For example, you start with the inputs and you apply the first layer of transformations, then check what it does makes sense. Then maybe you refactor it out in its own function and add the generated test for it. Then you move on the next step and so on until you have the final result.

angio··on “Expect tests” make test-writing feel like a REPL session
The title mentions writing tests as if they are repl sessions because you're supposed to iterate until you have the correct result.
angio··on “Expect tests” make test-writing feel like a REPL session
I believe the way to test it is to have a property like `n in integer | fib(n+2) == fib(n+1) + fib(n)`. This is close to the naive (but obviously correct?) implementation of fib and can be used to test the optimized version of the function.

You can also test that the sequence is increasing like `fib(n+2) > fib(n+1) > fib(n)`.

angio··on Plover: free, open-source stenography engine
On the other hand programming also involves writing a lot of prose: documentation, comments, github issues, slack etc.
angio··on The i3-gaps project has been merged with i3
if the colored gap is left/right of the gap i know the window left/right of the gap is the current one. without gap i would need to look for the other borders to understand which one is focused. i'm sure on a small (<20") screen this problem doesn't exist.
