anemitz··on Elastic (YC W11) launches Close.io, sales software designed by salespeople
Both Mac and Windows are supported natively. Once you signup, we'll detect the right OS and start the Windows or Mac download accordingly.
anemitz··on Unlimited Vacation Time
While I haven't researched this a ton, I've heard conflicting opinions about whether or not you must have a vacation policy in your handbook. This may also be a state-by-state requirement meaning TriNet optimizes for the blanket, you must have one, stance. Does anyone have a citation proving this one way or another?
anemitz··on Unlimited Vacation Time
Another less likely employer benefit to be considered is that in roughly half of that U.S. states, employers must pay out accrued vacation time if there is a policy in place.

An example from California's vacation faq (http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/faq_vacation.htm):

"For example, an employee who is entitled to three weeks of annual vacation (15 work days entitlement per year x 8 hours/day = 120 hours vacation entitlement per year) who quits on August 7, 2002 (the 219th day of the year) without having taken any vacation in 2002, who has no vacation carry-over from prior years, and whose final rate of pay is $13.00 per hour, would be entitled to $936.00 vacation pay upon separation"

anemitz··on The World's Lightest Electric Vehicle
Thanks for point that out -- I probably would have just assumed it was legal. Would be helpful to see a breakdown of all states it's illegal in under the Legality section of the Kickstarter. Seems like a great way to get around while traveling so I'd want to make sure it's useable in most states (or at least the ones you frequent most).

Author here. Thanks for posting this, @philfreo :)

Would love to hear feedback on the project!

anemitz··on Show HN: Collections, a fast multiple-account Google Docs client for Mac
It's also good practice to disallow all public traffic to your db instances on your firewall. AWS's security groups make this really easy to manage.

Since you store the Google auth_token couldn't anyone with access to the database also gain access to sessions?
anemitz··on SwipeGood (YC W11) Is Now Elastic, A Sales-As-A-Service Platform For Startups
A great product that is already generating revenue. A market that we can address. A sales cycle that is reasonable. Ping Steli at ElasticSales dot con for more info!
anemitz··on SwipeGood (YC W11) Is Now Elastic, A Sales-As-A-Service Platform For Startups
All our sales reps are highly technical and just amazing startup hustlers. A lot of our success is also due to technology. Ping Steli at ElasticSales dot com and he'll give you the details.

anemitz··on Ask HN: do founders get a salary after raising angel round?
It's normal to take a livable salary. For the founders I've spoken to in the Bay Area the range is somewhere between 40-60k/year. The variance depends on your expense policy and how you've setup your work environment. For example if you expense all meals, coffee, and you live and work out of an apartment, it's easy to get by on less than 40k which can take care of things like car payments, student loans, etc.
anemitz··on Building data structures that are smaller than an array and faster (in C)
I've seen slab allocation schemes (not sure if that's a standard term for it) work in scenarios like inverted indicies where you want to keep your datum key size small (32 vs 64bit).

The intuition is that you don't need granular memory addressing for storing large chunks. You only need to have addressability at the min(sizeof(doc)) level. So you can usually store the key in a 32bit int or less.

anemitz··on Ask HN: Payroll software with API and automated tax filing?
Scraping is probably the best short-term answer right now. Curious if any other early stage companies have taken this internal because it's such a pain.
anemitz··on Dow Jones' 2010 Executive Compensation Report for VC-Backed Companies
The first thing that came to my mind was non software related companies that have large manufacturing/operational overhead to launch a product. It's possible, with a small sample like this, to have only surveyed hardware companies -- which would definitely skew things quite a bit.

anemitz··on SwipeGood Now Supporting Chase, WF, BofA, Amex
Exactly right. And yes, we're hoping for that too:)
anemitz··on SwipeGood Now Supporting Chase, WF, BofA, Amex
We're connecting with banks based on popularity with end consumers. It's our goal to make SwipeGood accessible to everyone in the future.
anemitz··on SwipeGood Now Supporting Chase, WF, BofA, Amex
Our view is that in order to move quickly and enact as much change as possible, we need to be structured as a for-profit (C-Corp).

Since we're not charging charitable organizations, the 5% is used by us to cover the cost of operating our business. If you think about it in that context, it's not very high:)

anemitz··on SwipeGood Now Supporting Chase, WF, BofA, Amex
We're definitely looking at internationalizing the product in the future, but right now we're focused on the U.S. market.

anemitz··on This Christmas, turn your gifts into charitable giving
Understandable. But frankly, if you've ever seen how banks operate their technical infrastructure you'd want to store all your money in a matress. I'm confident Facebook has much smarter people working to make sure their products are secure.
anemitz··on This Christmas, turn your gifts into charitable giving
You can opt to create a swipegood.com account instead of connecting via facebook.

this song should definitely be called "i love the funk".
anemitz··on lazymake: make for the rest of us - GitHub
The main advantage here is that it should be easier to learn and use. The disadvantage is that the simplicity comes with a price -- it isn't as customizable as the automake. But the intention isn't to replace a system like that, just make it easier for projects to get up and running quickly.

Do you use automake for all of your projects or just the larger scale ones?
