Hey all, I'm currently a Computer Science Student at the University of Toronto and I'm looking for a Summer 2020 internship.

I've been working full-time for the past 3 years and I'm currently pursuing a second degree with my first being in Business. I decided to go back to school in order to fill my skills gap and I'm looking for a role that'll let me further stretch my academic and practical skills. I've put together software for major corporations while working in the client/service industry and I am open to roles outside of this as well. My experience has allowed me to pick up multiple technologies and allowed me to learn what I like and don't like - so feel free to reach out and discuss. I'm also a keen learner and I can pick up technologies very quickly so if you have something outside of what I know I'm excited to take on the challenge to learn it and expand my skills.

andy9775··on Ask HN: Addressing Canadian Telco Abuse of Power
The other issue with Canadian telecom is that certain companies are essentially given a government monopoly in certain areas. Where I live, cogeco provides cable Internet and Bell DSL. However, in the next city Rogers does cable and another does DSL. The logic is that one company owns one line and does maintnence on it. Also encourages companies to raise prices and decrease service since you have no other choice.

As for cell phones, it comes down to competition. I know that Saskatchewan as saskatel and the offerings from Rogers, Bell Telus used to be half of what you would pay on other provinces (haven't checked this lately).

My name is Andy and I recently graduated and am looking for an opportunity to learn and build interesting products. I enjoy working on mobile, front-end or backend and I don't have any real preference - I just like building things. You can see an example of my most recent project[0] which is an app that allows users to print to any papercut connected printer and is an extension of an app that I made about a year ago. While building it, I had to reverse engineer a website and the app does a little web scraping in order to treat the site as a pseudo api. While building the app I also decided to challenge my self to move away from the typical android spaghetti architecture by implementing an MVC approach through the use of message passing via an event bus. Most of the UI is here[0] with most of the logic in a library here[1]. You can also check out my github here[2] - nearing a 2 month commit streak.

andy9775··on Investing Returns on the S&P500
I think another thing to factor in is the increase in computerized trading. With more and more volume comprising of strategies that focus on the short term, it seems like the returns may not be as shown since the data the research is based on covers traditional trading periods.

not just HFT, buy algo shops like PDT and Renaissance Technologies being more and more frequent players

I am a recent grad looking for a place that will allow me to prove my self and allow me to expand my skill set. I enjoy working in various areas and I am a quick learner and work great in teams.

andy9775··on TSA gave my MacBook Pro to another passenger at LAX, and now it's gone
My biggest fear of flying. Do those TSA approved bags really "work"? Meaning that you don't have to remove your laptop
andy9775··on How Windows Everywhere finally happened
I'm only speculating, but I believe that Darwin is much more bare or stripped down compared to universal Windows. I believe that the author was refering to being able to run iOS apps on OSX and vice versa.

This IMO is not very smart. Each platform, mobile or desktop, has a different purpose and requires different things. So to make a universal OSX or iOS it means that either you make a significant amount of compromises which don't benefit either platform and each suffers. Or you build everything into the core and it ends up being a complete and buggy mess with a bloated install size.

andy9775··on React-Boilerplate v3: The “JS Fatigue Antivenin” Edition
To learn, I built it up little by little. Start with Babel, Webpack, express and react. Build something basic. Next add Redux then react router and finally server side rendering.

You have to use various tutorials, read lots of docs and try and fail. In the end I found I had a better understanding of what was going on.

andy9775··on Two Years Open Source
I mainly write JS. With vs code I can get some basic autocomplete with type script files (typings) and it autocompletes my own JS (including Docs). Atom will only show generic auto completion and won't even autocomplete my own files. I've given ternJS a try but can't seem to get it working.
andy9775··on Two Years Open Source
using VS code now. It's great, but came back to atom to see if things changed
andy9775··on Two Years Open Source
I tried atom a few months ago and it was slow. Loaded it up yesterday and I'm thinking of switching if only I could get decent autocomplete working.
andy9775··on No one wants yearly Android releases
I think the issue is that Android is becoming like windows is/was. By this I mean that there is lots of built in bloat. For instance Rogers (my carrier) automatically installs an NHL app, a ringtone app and other seemingly useless addons. Further, Android API's tend to change quickly and the standards aren't as strong as they are around the iOS ecosystem[0].

If google stops allowing manufacturers and carriers to customize the device and handles upgrades we'll see the same stats as iOS has with regards to market reach of the latest os version. Further, if they clean up the API's and develop better standards its less likely that apps will crash phones or cause significant lag or issues when running on old devices with a new os

0. I say this as an android dev who only wrote a little iOS with swift.

andy9775··on No one wants yearly Android releases
The issue doesn't seem to be that people don't want the new Android release, it's that carriers don't want to give it to them. Here (Canada), if a new device and Android version comes out you can forget about getting updates on old devices. This especially bad when it comes to minor releases that include security updates.

I am a recent business graduate and self-taught developer looking for entry level work. My business degree was heavily case based and thus I work well in teams and I am a great communicator. I was also the technical co-founder on a startup focused on agri-tech and developed the backend for the product written in java, as well as an android app to go with it. This required some security level work as well, mainly HMAC authentication. I really like building products and I am looking for an opportunity to demonstrate it.

andy9775··on Canada’s tech startup sector wants easier access to hire top foreign talent
Agreed. Think of Texas salaries vs cost of living and compare that to Toronto. I have a friend that went back to school just so that he can get a TN visa and leave for the US
andy9775··on VNC Roulette
Even though most of these probably have read only access, the fact that its even there shows that the person that set it up didn't have security on their mind. Sure you may not be able to do anything via VNC, but what about other attack vectors on these services? Are they updated, is the os up to date, is it using easy usernames/passwords so you can ssh in for example?
andy9775··on NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program?
I was joking clearly. Thought the ridiculousness of the idea make that clear.
andy9775··on A guide on how to be a Programmer (2002)
Seems like tech is turning into investment banking
andy9775··on NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program?
Never understood the fun in importing everything and chaining together someone else's code. Sometimes if I'm building something trivial, a bit of test code or something for fun I'll write up all of it, even if I have to reference others code. You learn so much more.
andy9775··on NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program?
Similar idea but what if you were to write your tests first and then upload them to a site that pieces together the required modules to pass them and generates an API against the modules.
andy9775··on Here Are Google, Amazon and Facebook’s Secrets to Hiring the Best People
I think the last suggestion gives that away :)
andy9775··on I've Just Liberated My Modules
Hmm but then is the scope/namespace reserved for each user that reserves/uses it? If I publish @andy9775/left-pad can someone publish under @andy9775/other-module or can only I publish under @andy9775/...?

If so, why is no one using this???

andy9775··on I've Just Liberated My Modules
Wouldn't (shouldn't) npm block same named modules from being uploaded with a different username?

Proposal: go with a java based naming system: com.yc.mymodule.

All installations would require the user to use com.yc.* in package.json and all users would be required to register as a com.yc style organization name. Thus only one user can remove/add that exact module.

andy9775··on I've Just Liberated My Modules
17 lines of JS causes so much havoc. Knew this would eventually happen, but I thought the code would have been more interesting
andy9775··on An Incredibly Dorky Look at Each Presidential Candidate’s Technology Stack
There was also an article on aeon regarding search engines manipulating politics and shows that Google tends to favor Democrats. The outcome of this election will be very interesting given that technologically speaking there is a level playing field.
andy9775··on Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer?
I eventually want to purse the formal route and do a part time BSc or perhaps get a MSc, for now I need something to pay off loans
andy9775··on Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer?
Great thanks. I've built stuff before and have been learning/coding for the past ~4 years so I don't classify myself as a complete beginner.

When applying without a CS background how tough are the technical interviews? Do they tend to expect more or are they more lenient and look more at fit and ability to grow?

andy9775··on Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer?
I have a side question, did you end up pursing a CS/Engineering degree? I'm trying to get a dev role and have a business background and looking for some advice on getting in.
andy9775··on Functional Programming in JavaScript: Interactive Exercises
