andsoitis··on LGBT tolerance slumps in the Netherlands as debate turns vicious
I blame the "queer" contingent to a large degree. Why? It is a political identity rather than sexual orientation and isn't about gay & lesbian civil rights and is casting a long shadow over our hard-won acceptance in society.

If you're a gay man in your 50s, "queer" is the last word you heard before you had your head bashed in.

I think everyone would be better off if the queer and the trans communities don't continue to latch onto the gay and lesbian (i.e. homosexual) community. For they splice not on sexual orientation but on something else and we do not share the same interests or concerns.

andsoitis··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Apple provide Xcode 27's markdown editor as a separate app?
What if you used something like VSCode if you don't like Xcode?

Or one of the many many others that exist? A quick google yielded this one for example: https://stackedit.io

Be resourceful :-)

andsoitis··on Who is going to teach the junior developers?
I taught myself (early 80s, pre-internet or pre-BBS). These days the resources are infinite. You don't need a "teacher".

Be curious. Take initiative. Try things.

andsoitis··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Apple provide Xcode 27's markdown editor as a separate app?
Just use a plain text editor.
andsoitis··on Ask HN: Have you read the Dune books by Frank Herbert?
Yes.

This is a closed question (asks for yes/no answer). Better to ask open-ended questions, like "What inspiration did you get from Dune?" or "What other books did you enjoy after reading Dune?" etc.

Open-ended question lead to more curiosity and interesting conversation.

andsoitis··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Apple provide Xcode 27's markdown editor as a separate app?
.md files are mostly (only?) used by engineers. Why build and maintain a second app when you already have something that does the job sufficiently?
andsoitis··on US jury says Apple owes record $5.7B in haptic technology patent case
> Or just don't protect trade secrets (the entire point of patents is that trade secrets are harmful to society), and require all software to come with source,

That would infringe upon my freedom as a creator of software. No thanks.

when you think words carry the same impact as actions, you get these very poor outcomes. talk is cheap. it soothes the ego but doesn't move atoms.
andsoitis··on Cash Is King in San Francisco Real Estate. All-Cash Buyer Market at 20 Year High
One of the most vocally progressive cities in the United States is the most regressive when it comes to actually improving real people's lives.

No, you don't have to.

There isn’t one mind. We are unique individuals with different opinions. Opinions of an individual can even be contradictory!

he might be in "the flow" but he lacks taste in usability.
andsoitis··on Ask HN: How do you get your hands on physics environments for your robotics SIM?
What has your research unveiled so far?
andsoitis··on Show HN: Read while you listen to your Audiobooks
I think this misunderstands reading. Have you read a book this way? What did it feel like and what did you miss compared to reading in silence or to music?

Nevertheless, good luck with your idea and venture!

Sure. The rent does give you polish, however.

Also, for non-commercial use, Delphi is free.

andsoitis··on Gender, Identity, and Power in the Shaft Tombs of Western Mesoamerica
> The dichotomy between female figures associated with fertility and nurturing and male figures linked to power and strength suggests that gender roles were well defined in these communities.

Of course. This is the standard outcome of anisogamy, i.e. reproduction involving two different gamete types: typically large gametes (eggs) and small gametes (sperm). This is the biological basis for the male/female sex distinction.

Culture (and science) fiddle with the biological imperatives but cannot erase them and the further you go back in time the more biology rules.

Depends on compiler & runtime. If you pick Oxygene, for example, you get GC etc. https://www.remobjects.com/elements/oxygene/language

Tell us more?

andsoitis··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
The issue is that you're talking in abstraction and it isn't clear what the concrete thing is you're thinking of. Bluntly: you're being obscure rather than illuminating.

For instance, with respect to this article, which is about test scores, how does dynamical systems theory describe what's going on or predict consequences?

andsoitis··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
Is your point that earth is not at a "stable point" or "stable range" but it used to be?

Or are you talking about another system like "society" or "civilization"? Or something else altogether?

andsoitis··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe

andsoitis··on CEO of Mistral: AI is software. It can be controlled
> For starters, the entire framing of AI in public discourse is based on the way that Amodei and Altman want them to be framed, with little consideration given to alternative ways of framing the current and prospective future capabilities of AI.

Assuming that is a threshold that means they are oligarchs (which seems like a huge stretch), I thought I'm seeing vigorous discourse and debate on this. Not just a single POV. You don't?

More websites would be more accessible if you can throw good automation at it. AI seems particularly well-suited to evaluate various dimensions of accessibility of a website.
