andscoop··on Startup founders throughout the Midwest are doing something new: staying
While 34k is and probably was very low, Fort Wayne Indiana is one of the lowest CoL cities in US. I wish they would tech take more seriously there, but they're in for an uphill battle if they do with Detroit, Indianapolis and Chicago competing for talent in the close proximity.

I think there is a real opportunity for state side digital nomads who want to live cheap while starting a business. Places like fort Wayne Indiana give them access to a lively downtown, cheap housing and access to 1st tier cities in a few hours drive. Source - I grew up there.

andscoop··on Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with a low-calorie diet
For some people "starving" themselves is easier. It requires less decision making and therefore less decision fatigue. Intermittent fasting is a perfect balance of physical discomfort and mental effort for me.

I feel no physical discomfort when doing the standard 16/8 schedule these days and only feel slight discomfort on a 22/2 schedule. I'd much rather do this than have to meal plan and have anxiety over what restaurant my friends chose for the night.

But I also understand that it's not for everyone and wouldn't push judgement on anyone who chooses some alternative method of controlling weight/insulin sensitivity

andscoop··on I Am Worried About My Ears
Do you have any more info on this? I have unilateral deafness and am constantly increasing the pressure of my good ear throughout the day by popping it. (The way I do this is sort by blowing a quick burst of air out my nose and clicking my ear at the same time.) I have long worried it may not be healthy but I have been doing it for years and have no recorded hearing loss from it, I continue to do it because the added volume it gives me is sometimes the difference between having to ask "what?" a third time in a row.

andscoop··on Chrome 68 will mark all HTTP sites as “not secure”
Netlify free tier makes this as simple as it gets. (As long as your static site generator is supported.)
andscoop··on Lift Weights, Eat More Protein, Especially If You’re Over 40
>"Someone who has exclusively trained calisthenics isn't going to be magically able to lift two times his own body weight"

I have personally witnessed a gymnast who had never bench pressed before in his life bench press ~400lbs while weighing ~200lbs.

I won't speak to some of the OPs other points but you are severely underestimating calisthenics.

andscoop··on Gun-toting robbers force wealthy currency trader to transfer Bitcoin fortune
We're going to see a lot more of this. Banks don't just provide security in the form of trust, they provide a physical security as well. Any robbery attempt will involve more than just a single victim, ie. Bank staff.

Do cryptocurrencies have a way to make a single person less vulnerable to being held at gun point and stripped of an entire fortune?

andscoop··on Google Clips – Now available
I recently saw a video from a family member where she had taken the time to shoot a short video for every day of 2017. They struck me as different than the selfies that we have all come to know. She was sometimes the subject of the video but often she appeared to take care to do it when she was with friends and family.

To me this sort of video journaling is appealing. There is almost zero effort to get started and you can capture so much of an experience in just a short clip. Honestly surprised it's not more popular.

As for the Google Clips I would love if the device was on a rolling 30 second video capture so that you could click a button and capture the last 30 seconds of footage. I have heard of devices existing for audio but never video.

andscoop··on A zen master explains why meditation is overrated (and maybe even harmful)
"it is better to engage in mindful activities where you are more naturally engaging with your environment"

This sounds fine but what if your environment is unnatural? I believe this the case for most Americans (only group I am qualified to speak on).

I also don't necessarily think this is a bad thing, but I do believe an unnatural environment requires a remedy and that meditation could be that remedy.

Fowl are living the same life they have lived for thousands of years. Human lives have shifted in the last 50 years and perhaps have shifted more dramatically in the last 2000 years.

andscoop··on Ask HN: Which self-hosted, enterprise-ready Slack alternative do you use?
Along the same lines as the question, does anyone consider keybase.io teams feature a viable alternative for small to medium sized teams?
andscoop··on Ask HN: How did you learn to program?
I taught myself when I was about 14. I ended up programming in response to being given an old laptop that was too resource constrained for the latest Windows OS. All I wanted to do was browse the internet and listen to music locally. This lead me down. The road of discovering linux and eventually writing a CLI music player in Python. I didn't do any serious programming for years after that.

Later on I was struggling through college, switching majors every semester and was running out of time to pick a career. I had no partcuarly strong interest, but I knew I wanted a challenge, so I went into a computer related degree. I am now happily employed 5 years into a career in SWE.

To summarize I taught myself to program through whatever resources I had available to me in response to problems that programming could solve. The internet is vast, if you want to learn you will. Don't just rely on the information, reach out to the people for advice, ie find mini-mentors.

andscoop··on So you’re a feminist who works at Uber?
This article has reminded me that just because people proclaim to be a feminist, Christian, humanist or terrorist doesn't mean that they are often primarily that thing.

This particular feminist would probably identify primarily with being a mom and in certain scenarios one of those identities must take precedence. So even if you do feel Uber is anti-feminism it still seems compatible that a feminist who primarily identifies as a mother would take a job at a company like Uber to better provide for her own career which in turn allows her to provide for her kid(s).

Humans are messy.

andscoop··on Failed Your Resolutions Already? Time to Try a Habit-Breaking Device
If it helps people then by all means I hope it succeeds. But it does bring up some questions. Does strength of shock improve outcomes? Is it the actual shock that improves behavior or is that just the delivery method of negative reinforcement? (Likely the case).

I would think we could find more gentle ways of redirecting behavior, perhaps an app that keeps count of your failure and success towards a certain goal - therefore gamifying habits (likely exists).

In the off chance it is the shock that helps curb bad behaviors, I would love to see some more fashionable shock collars for the more extreme self improvement junkies among us.

andscoop··on How we’re fixing “unlimited” vacation
What do you view as alternatives? It seems to me like this is a huge improvement on unlimited vacation, so you should add suggestions for improvement rather than knocking it down.
andscoop··on Ask HN: How is you health?
I run regularly, averaging ~5 miles per week, but I have had plenty of 30+ mpw and plenty of 0 mpw. I have other active hobbies such as hiking, cycling, team sports and weight lifting.

On the flip side of this, I have a phone addiction. Drink more than the government recommends, use nicotine occasionally to boost performance and overall eat too much.

I could always be healthier, but time is my biggest hindrance from being so.
