andrewpbrett··on Five Easy Pieces of Online Identity
It was not there an hour ago - I would like to think that I was the impetus, as I saw it right when he posted and immediately replied: https://twitter.com/#!/andrewpbrett/status/56503853184598016
andrewpbrett··on Sequoia To Color Labs: Not Since Google Have We Seen This
I tried both the Android and iPhone version and couldn't take a single picture before it crashed. Tried multiple times on both.

It's a simplification, like any analogy. It's also a version of Brooks' Law[1], in case that wasn't apparent to all.

Businesses can certainly scale with more people. But this isn't a business, and to loosely paraphrase Andy Bechtolsheim at startup school this year, throwing money at problems is lazy, you should be throwing minds at problems. $41M in the bank will almost certainly be harmful at this stage of Color's development.

Also, even $41M is not going to (noticeably) speed up the surrounding ecosystem.

"Will $25 million help you get five years into one?"

Can 9 women produce a baby in one month?

andrewpbrett··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually code at a hackathon?
How would you enforce that only work done doing the hackathon is presented as the entry? Not trolling, genuinely curious and looking for suggestions.
andrewpbrett··on Y Combinator’s Paul Graham On The $150K Per Start-Up Offer
Maybe I'm the only one, but I always thought pizza-profitable (or ramen- or sushi- or whatever) referred to the fact that a company was pulling in enough revenue such that the founders could cover the cost of pizza (or sushi, or ramen). When used that way it's also more informative; sushi means more revenue than pizza, which means more than ramen.
andrewpbrett··on Sex, Lies, and the TSA
I would argue that the recent uproar is over both the pat downs and the scanners.

The fact that the poll, as you point out, 1) only mentions the scanners and not the alternative and 2) doesn't fully indicate what's really happening should be further reason to call them out for citing it.

andrewpbrett··on [dead]
that was indeed what I was going for.
andrewpbrett··on Startup School Recap
Definitely agree, those were both great talks. It was easy to see how Brian's personality comes across in the AirBnB culture (or maybe vice versa).
andrewpbrett··on Visual Website Optimizer: Run A/B Tests On Your Site
That's exactly my point. The word "just" is not in the title, nor the post.

I know that it's very easy to take a review personally, but based on your comments in this thread, your sense of entitlement about getting a writeup and then your criticism of said writeup are the two things I'm going to remember about VWO (which is unfortunate).

andrewpbrett··on Visual Website Optimizer: Run A/B Tests On Your Site
I'll ask the same question I did over there: where in the article do you see the phrase "just another"? It's not in there.
andrewpbrett··on Twitter for iPad is here
When viewing someone's profile, you can see what I presume is their chronological user id. @jack, for example, is #12; @ev is #20. @paulg's recently created account is ~183M, and a brand new account came in at 185M.

Wonder if it's a bug or intentional that they're now releasing this info. I might not be update the app...

andrewpbrett··on Updates to Contacts and a (slightly) new look for Gmail
"So, by popular request, we're happy to announce that an overhauled version of Gmail Contacts will be rolling out today."
andrewpbrett··on GitHub Hits One Million Hosted Projects
I chose to use "projects" over "repositories" in the headline to make it more understandable to a non-coder. There are some gists are more worthy of being called a full project than many repositories anyway. Hopefully this doesn't take away from the main point which is that github is kicking ass.
andrewpbrett··on Why WordPress Themes are Derivative of WordPress
I thought this piece did a good job of summarizing the issues, and an especially good job diving into the technical details of this specific example. Those details are sadly lacking from much of the "noise" being made on the topic - the mixergy interview, for example. This post is signal.

andrewpbrett··on TechCrunch Hacker Identified: You Decide If We Press Charges
People wonder about lots of things that aren't true. I unzipped those files. We did not pay for them. "Landed in our inbox" should do more than suggest that nothing preceded it. Would you say that software just "landed on your desktop" after you paid for it?

Profiting from traffic and paying for stolen goods are two very different things, so I don't think the point does still stand.

andrewpbrett··on TechCrunch Hacker Identified: You Decide If We Press Charges
> they paid the hacker

This is not true.

andrewpbrett··on TechCrunch is hiring
that's what I was going for :)

andrewpbrett··on Eric S. Raymond - The Curse of the Gifted (2000)
"Your tendency to undervalue modularization and code-sharing is one symptom [of the curse]. Another is your refusal to use systematic version-control or release-engineering practices. To you, these things seem mostly like overhead and a way of needlessly complicating your life."

I'd say he came around on version control with git - five+ years later.

andrewpbrett··on Spam vs Mahalo: Matt Cutts Explains the Difference
"I talked to him, and so I said what software do you use to power your search engine? And he said we use Twika or MediaWiki. You know, wiki software, not C++ not Perl not Python. And at that point it really does move more into a content play. And so it is closer to an About.com than to a Powerset or a Microsoft or Yahoo! Search."
andrewpbrett··on Wordpress Hosted Blogs are Down
We were under that impression as well.
andrewpbrett··on Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crunchies
Fine. But the original title did not mention the Crunchies at all; that was my main issue. I see it's been fixed.
andrewpbrett··on Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crunchies
Can you change the title to accurately reflect the content please? Stripping NSFW from the original makes sense but the complete rewrite does not.
andrewpbrett··on Tell HN: Check out my app, RunMeLater, Web Service for CRON Jobs/Scheduled Tasks
I don't think it's completely awful - it's a matter of what you're comparing it to. If you're pitting it against a slick, non-technical consumer facing site, sure, it's a little text heavy. But if you're comparing it to a typical API doc, it's a pretty good combination of style and utility.
andrewpbrett··on Item 10^6
I've never heard "sieve of giraffes" before, and I'm coming up empty in searches for it. Can you explain?
